Having visited the wainwright before under the old managers,i thought id check out the reviews left by others before we visisted again. I could not understand what the moaning minnies were moaning about. Yes you have to queue, yes you have to wait and yes outside in the rain, yes you have to sign the book and yes you have to sanitise your hands,so what, just do it,we did and had a great two nights. Its been took over but thats the only change, good beer, good food at a good price and great atmosphere, the new owners and staff make you feel very welcome with nothing too much bother. I had a burger and asked for extra garlic mayo,it was huge as was the tub of garlic. I ate the lot from the soft bun on the base to the juicy cheeseburger in the centre topped off with crispy onion rings on top, delicious. Bangers and mash my wife had was equally massive and very tasty too. Thanks to all the staff who made our weekend very enjoyable, keep uo the great work but please nomore roxette on the music, its too much lol

Went here on Monday evening for a meal and a pint. Arrived at 20.10 , after checking their website that says they do food until 21.00. we were refused food ( with a nonchalant smirk it has to be said)as they stop at 20.00 . I like this pub as their beer is good and food ok, just don't go after eight !!

Hi Dougie Sorry we let you down. Like most of the hospitality industry we are being battered by staffing issues as we come out of Covid. I do our website and I’m sorry I’ve not updated it to reflect where we are at the moment, but we have to shorten hours and cut lunches etc to give our team breaks almost day by day. Hope we’re better sorted when you visit next.

Went in for dinner as a family tonight, the staff were really friendly and were doing a great job to keep everyone safe (re.covid). The food was really tasty and arrived quickly as our server knew our little boy was ravenous! Definitely worth a visit.

Arrived confident of good food sadly something has gone wrong since our last visit. The order was 20 minutes before the venue stopped serving but we did not want lobster just a couple of burgers with chips and one sausage with chips. Lets start with what was brought out some form of potato masquerading as chips, unpleasant and quite frankly awful. The burgers came with an onion ring that had clearly been swimming in a sea of fat along with rest of the burger. The sausages had been burnt but clearly disguised in gravy until tasting! how can you get such basic food so badly wrong? I was very hungry so ate the burger but at least the dogs enjoyed the burnt offerings! Wont be back in a hurry

First the good: They handle the COVID stuff pretty well. We were greeted quickly and told about the procedures with a minimum of fuss. The range of beers available is good and the staff were able to make recommendations confidently. If we had gone for a beer I think we'd have been quite happy. However, the bad, we were actually there hoping to enjoy a meal and then while away a couple of hours on a rainy evening. My partner and I both ordered Fish and Chips. However, the chips were all stuck together in a clump, and very bitter-tasting, as if burnt despite not being black or visibly burnt. I don't really know how you can mess up chips but these were deeply unpleasant. The other negatives regarding our visit were more subjective, or unavoidable. It's quite a small pub which pre-COVID might've felt different but it felt a bit tight in the current situation. We were sat near the toilets, though half the pub could be considered the same. Other reviews are so good that maybe this was a one-off but we just ate what we could and left as quickly as possible.

The food was ok but not a great selection on the menu. Let down by a very rude waiter who shouted at our 9 year old who wanted skinny fries. He then wanted payment prior to the meal being served. Not come across this policy before. Covid19 precautions in place however.

Hi Rabster We're sorry if you didn't enjoy all aspects of your visit to The Wainwright. To respond to your comments, our menu is reduced at this time because we have a very small kitchen and have reduced our kitchen team on rota to maintain social distancing within what space we have. I don't know the details of your son's experience, and we are extremely sorry if we upset him. All of our team, both back and front of house are very friendly and approachable and I cannot imagine anyone shouting at a customer, let alone a child. On a number of occasions we have had to respond more robustly than we would like to the few customers intent on flouting the precautions we have in place to minimise the risk of Covid 19 contamination to staff and other customers. These include, for instance, whenever possible, remaining at your table, where we will take your order and bring your drinks and food to you. Is it possible a team member was a little over zealous on this occasion? In any event, there is no excuse for shouting, so please apologise to your son on our behalf for any upset we caused. We are a pub and we do not have a dedicated restaurant space. Customers would, under normal circumstances, be asked to come to the bar to order their drinks and food and would pay for them at that time. I cannot think of a pub in Keswick, without restaurant space, that does not operate in this way. Again, under normal circumstances, we would offer the option of starting a tab and paying at the end of your visit if you wish. However, due to the level of absconders, we would normally require a payment card to be left behind the bar during your visit. I'm afraid that we have had to temporarily suspend this practice as part of our Covid safety measures. Again, we are sorry you had a poor experience and we hope you'll maybe give us another chance when normal service is resumed.

Having read ‘The Wainwright’ had been voted one of ‘Britain’s 10 greatest walkers pubs’, in respected magazine ’Trail’, I visited with a friend after a walk round Derwent Water. It’s place in that iconic Top 10 is very well deserved. We were greeted by friendly & attentive staff for whom nothing was too much trouble and the general ambiance & relaxed atmosphere was enhanced by thoughtful layout & other customers clearly enjoying being there as much as we were. There are unique & thoughtful touches such as a map showing location of Cumbrian breweries supplying the pub and footage of Iconic challenging climbs on Cumbrian fells quietly running on a screen above the bar. The several Cask beers were amazing, both in variety of style & quality, the barman readily offering taster glasses, just to be sure before purchasing. Whilst we didn’t have a meal, due to being short on time, the other customers we spoke to all said the food was really good & far better than the ‘usual pub food’ served by too many these days. We will definitely eat there next time, the steak pie seemed to be favourite. Keep up the great work, can’t wait to visit next time, there’s no better pub in the area!

Called here for lunch during one of our days in Keswick. Great traditional pub feel. Decent lunch menu and some great cask ales that would merit sampling on an evening visit rather than the single pint I could allow myself at lunch before tackling a local walk. I opted for one of the sourdough baguettes, but wife wanted me to give a special mention to the chilli con carne filling in her baked potato, which she reckoned was the best she had experienced in a pub!

Popped in for a Sunday lunch last week. The service wasn't really welcoming on arriving, we order drinks and two dinners. There is little atmosphere in there but a beef and lamb dinner would warm our bodies on a wet Lakes day. The food arrived promptly, the meals were quite a disappointment of cheap cuts and reheated roast potatoes. The worst and most unforgiving was I had to pay an extra pound for a Yorkshire pud with the Lamb, I ordered two and tbh they were the best part of the meal. The beef was brisket which it didn't state so very chewy and fatty, the lamb very tasteless so presume shoulder. We ate what we could and left without a thank you. We didn't and won't be returning, Keswick is a minefield of places like this, poor ales and food but with the odd place like Magnolia serving good food.

We visited this pub for a meal. Unfortunately only 2 of the 3 meals ordered arrived, when we reminded the staff there was an outstanding meal they were extremely apologetic and gave us a round of drinks - it was very busy and mistakes happen! Unfortunately even when it did eventually arrive it wasn’t what had been ordered and the pie was luke warm. It was disappointing as it’s a great place with lots of historical stories told through the pictures etc on its walls. As always the selection of real ales was excellent.

We queued to get into The Wainwright twice this weekend and both times ended up leaving as the staff were rude. Both days we were the only people in the queue for the pub, and two staff members passed us without even acknowledging we were there. We understand that they may have been busy but for us to stand there and be completely ignored wasn’t great customer service. Also, the waft of fish from inside the pub was less to be desired.

Freshly cooked food, which was very nice and well presented, they had a good range of ales, being camra pub i would have expected this but still good. Staff all very pleasant and made a fuss of our dog. Will go back, and all covid compliant. 😃

Called here today for a quick bite to eat. All covid safe. We had a cheese and tomato 🍅 baguette which came with a side salad and coleslaw Ham and cheese salad baguette 🥖 portion of homemade chips..The guys were lovely and friendly...Well worth a visit. Don't be put off that it is a smaller establishment...Little gem of a pub.

Fab pub, very welcoming and great service. We visited with our dog and they had dog biscuits on the bar for him. Lots of food choice and considering it was busy, we didn’t wait long for the food. We had various baguettes and chips which were great portion sizes and a salad which was bigger than we were expecting. Would go here again if I was in the area.

We dropped into this lovely pub after an exhaustive walk. We were greeted warmly & shown to a great table by an open window, which was airy yet cosy. We were advised about local beers (for my husband) by our extremely helpful waiter, Kieran. He was friendly, knowledgeable & made us feel really welcome. We had an amazing home cooked meal. Fantastic steak & ale pie, fish & chips & 2 chuldrens' meals of cumberland sausages, home cooked chips & beans. Our children were delighted with their delicious cumberland sausages. Their meals were huge, with a drink & ice cream too! A fantastic meal. Home cooked, delicious & great value. Highly recommended & Keiran was attentive & personable. Highly recommended & we will return soon. Thank you.
