Stopped of here for a little snack at about 3pm as it was a bit late to have lunch. There was only one person downstairs and it took a little while to place our order as he seemed run on his feet making drinks. Our food ended up coming out before we got our drinks but they were both delicious. We got some nachos and fries to share and a hot chocolate and a beer for around £19 which I think is really expensive for not that much food. However I couldn’t complain at all about the quality of food and drinks as they did taste amazing.

We were a family ranging from 69 to 4 looking for breakfast. This was one of the few places open early so although the pricing was on the high side we thought it would deliver. A lovely venue in the heart of Windermere it was clear Covid rules were being applied. However there was no welcome, no children’s menu, no interest in who we were. 3 of us opted for a delicious sounding porridge pear brûlée- when it arrived it it had a small blob of pear purée and no evidence of any brûlée although a thin coating of sugar was present. This was very poor value for money. A yoghurt granola was too dry but a veggie breakfast was delicious- one out of 5 then? We left as we arrived, feeling there was very little service and feeling well behaved small children were not catered for/welcomed- disappointing...

Loved their sandwiches, salad, mussels, beer, coffee and POSH hot chocolates! Their kitchen staff are lovely but definitely abhor that Italian male staff who was slow, disorganised, and inefficient. That Italian staff gave preferential service to Italian customer at the end of the queue over a couple with two small children who were waiting patiently. I had loads of time to observe all the staff as our table waited half an hour to have our orders taken but the wait for food to arrive was not long at all which meant that delays and slow turn around of tables was entirely caused by Italian male staff taking charge of floor. I was seated right where the queue was and observed three couples give up and leave.

Have visited for lunch 3 or 4 times since October and have always enjoyed it even though it is a little more pricey that I would like. However, I was very disappointed today. Our food took forever, all staff members were lovely but extremely stressed and admitted to customers they were very understaffed. There was not a lot of social distancing measures with a staff members touching me whilst reaching for equipment as I was sat by the door. It was also very cold due to the door being left open. Felt very sorry for all the staff and food was nice when we eventually got it. Would go again but hope it would be a much better experience

The Company is constantly trying to improve what we do regarding COVID and have various measures in place. We have sanitisers at the doors of all our establishments, a book to sign on entering to enable Track and Trace, signs throughout the building reminding people of the need to socially distance, cleaning and sanitising routines are also in place and staff are told to ensure these are adhered to. Door handles and menus are also being sanitised on a regular basis, condiments and sauces are stripped down, cleaned out and sanitised twice each day. We are constantly changing how we work to implement more stringent measures and have ordered screens to be installed by our tills to protect our staff and customers when paying. This is because we have had customers walking out as they feel that they have been queuing too long to pay for their meals. We have now introduced ordering and paying at the bar prior to receiving meals and drinks for those customers seated outside. Our service has slowed down considerably because to keep to Government guidelines we have to have only two chefs in the kitchen and as we are a very busy restaurant, cooking food fresh to order, it is inevitable that waiting times are longer than usual. Our staff do have masks to wear but some are not wearing them because they feel too uncomfortable and it is not easy to speak to customers when they have them on. All our establishments are extremely busy throughout the season and I would suggest that if you have any concerns regarding social distancing or anything at all to do with COVID then you probably should not enter.

You walk through the outdoor space to get inside. Subtle lighting. Outdoor space is not massive but nice and has a big umbrella Good drinks menu of several wines and up market bottles of wine on the back. Cocktail menu has a good variety and doesn't stick with just the classics. Cosmo was made for messy nessi although not on the menu. The menu was made £7.95 Pinot Grigio rose £7.50 large glass. Nice glass of wine, very easy drinking. Bar staff very polite and knowledgeable - asked messy nessi what she likes about a cosmo as will make her drinks around that Although busy, not too just so can sit and talk Bottle prosecco £25.00. Very easy prosecco, not too dry. Fresh orange juice provided and freshly grounded coffee Food is offered and table service upstairs. Downstairs is the bar and you need to order at the bar.

My daughter her 14 month old daughter and myself visited because we thought it looked really nice, we ordered soup of the day which was sweet potato, coconut and chilli, I asked if the chilli was mild because I can’t take hot chilli, the waiter went away, came back and said it was very mild, so we ordered it. It was so hot I couldn’t eat it, we put cream in to tone it down but did no good so I left it and told the staff why. They never offered me an alternative and even charged full price for it. The staff weren’t very pleasant at all. It was the first day of our 4 day break and would have eaten there every day if it had been better and my other daughter, her husband and 4 grown up children were going next week to Windermere and I would have recommended it to them but they won’t go now

Sorry to hear you were surprised at the strength of the chilli. Unfortunately people's perception of "hot" varies wildly and this is the reason we took off one of our popular dishes (chilli). When there is chilli or wasabi in any dish then people who don't like spicy food probably shouldn't order it. Having said that, our staff should have dealt with your complaint at the time, we always have a supervisor or manager on duty and if you didn't eat the soup they should have offered you an alternative from the menu - although we only make one soup daily and this is made from fresh ingredients. If you would like to let us have more details, I can look at who was on duty at this time and take it up with them. The email address is headoffice@dutton-cuisine.co.uk.

Called in just for a coffee after a morning walk, only allowed to sit downstairs for coffees as upstairs just for eating. If eating downstairs you picked a table and ordered at bar sounds easy however it wasn’t as bar person was busy with other jobs, and one other person was taking orders and money from people who had come down stairs from eating, no one knew where to stand to get served so 2 people got served before me when I was there first (not blaming the customers though), very disorganised finally placed an order just for one tea and coffee which took about 20 minutes to come, saw the bar man making it but he broke off 3 times to deal with other customers with various requests. This place looks lovely from outside and very inviting but they need to learn management and customer service to get customers back. Wish we had gone elsewhere!

Thank you for your review, I am sorry you had to wait to be served and I have taken this up with the staff concerned. We have only just changed the system on Saturday and moved the serving of food to the first and second floors, with drinks being served on the ground floor. I realise this has caused a few problems but we are working on it. Hopefully in the next few weeks it will be clearer and the service should be more efficient.

Thought we’d pop in for a couple of cocktails, at twenty pounds for two drinks we were looking forward to a nice treat, how wrong I was. Waited fifteen minutes for our drinks, I had a margarita and my wife had a cherry bakewell. The margarita was overly salted with no citrus flavour at all, basically just tasted of tequila, with the taste of the drink and the size, you could have easily mistaken it for a shot of tequila. The cherry bakewell while also very small was apparently tasty. The worst part of the visit was seeing a member of staff stand on the bar in muddy trainers next to where fruit is cut for drinks, she was stacking boxes high which wasn’t only dangerous but also very unhygienic. When she got down we at least expected to see someone wipe the bar down. Instead we saw a dessert placed on the bar before being given to a customer where she had been stood. After this, a member of staff placed a box on the bar to remove items, halfway through emptying the box he moved the box onto the chopping board used for chopping up fruit for drinks. At no point was anything wiped down or disinfected. We didn’t stay for a second drink

Called in by chance for a new years day evening meal and were seated almost immediately. They offer a varied menu from which I chose beef burger cooked to my liking as it was made of beef mince. It did not disappoint, along with the home made salsa, it was delicious. All 7 of us in the party were delighted with the food. The kids with us started telling jokes then the waiter joined in. They thought it was hilarious. Brown Sugar is tastefully decorated throughout and the staff were very professional and friendly and the service was second to none. Totally different to a couple of years ago when we visited. A change of staff has obviously worked and I'm very happy to highly recommend Brown Sugar to anyone visiting Windermere. Well done to all involved. 😁👍🍽

Where do I begin? Arrived in a group of 8 and the gentleman was initially accommodating and managed to seat us on two tables of four but very close together which, ordinarily, would have meant that we could share in conversation had it not been for the tasteless power ballads being blared out from the Bose speakers at a volume that would raise the dead. He then began to loudly dictate to us that we should all pay on one bill rather than split, a soap box made only more bizarre by then preceding to lecture us on the advent of online banking, as if we had just crawled to his establishment out of our caves via the nearest TK Maxx. As a vegetarian I was disappointed by the options available to me. With the sole offerings of a Leek Pie and a pizza not wetting my appetite, I lumped for a baked Camembert. A dish that is intended to be shared as a starter, which is a good job as it costs £13, but hey, I like Camembert. My peers with deeper pockets than I were throwing just short of £20 at burgers that they were very much looking forward to. We were also looking forward to our very expensive drinks that took 20 minutes to arrive. This was mainly down to the fact that the ratio of bar staff to FOH staff was oddly one sided. So the dashing chaps behind the bar had made our drinks but despite us being sat ten feet from them, they were more interested in their haircuts than bringing our drinks to the table. The food followed fairly swiftly, in good time with the gentlemen waiting the tables dropping cutlery and knocking drinks off the bar in the process but this was all done with a cheeky smile and more great haircuts. It was not very good. My Camembert was seasoned with the many flies that were flying into the restaurant from one of the open windows or doors, which put me off. I understand the weather was warm but the establishment does appear to have air conditioning, which is more preferable to the smell of cigarette smoke and the constant wafting of insects. That also may have had something to do with the gentlemen’s bizarre decision to let two young ladies into the restaurant with dogs. Who am I to question their decision making or admittance policies. One out of Eight of us enjoyed our meals, Ryan was very pleased with his beef pasty and chips. Nobody else enjoyed their meals, comments ranging from too dry to it being cold. Comparisons were being drawn to fast food establishments which is not encouraging when paying as much as what we were. However it is only fair I comment on my own meal, and it was well presented and tasty until the flies began to circle and I became put off. Overall my impression of this place is that it’s making a valiant attempt to be hip and trendy in an otherwise very traditional village. It’s nicely furnished and the litter of charming staff makes for a good impression that is let down by what follows. I personally believe you’re better off seeking out some well needed competition for this place in a surrounding village or simply going hungry. Two stars.

Poor service and wasnt made to feel welcome. Told that the upstairs was a mess so to wait downstairs for 5 minutes whilst they prepared a table. Then told by another member of staff to go upstairs. Then told by the first member of staff that we shouldn't have been told to come upstairs and now we would have to watch him prepare the table. Asked for an IPA then told later they didn't have any and a make of drink was suggested which ended up being a cider. Ordered some starters which we requested before meal- main meal came first so we then had to cancel the starters. No meal check. Food OK. Environment nicely decorated. Seems that all staff were operating separately with no clear plan of who was doing what or any form of communication/respect between each other. Wouldn't go back as I left feeling gutted we'd parted with £75 for a poor experience.

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately, we were very short staffed, several were off sick and as we are a food establishment we ask our staff not to come in when ill. We do have a bitter on offer which is similar to IPA and I cannot understand why you weren't offered this as an alternative.

Unusual visit yet oddly charming. The staff were hostile (and that’s being polite), we felt like we were in Helmand back in 06. Social distancing doesn’t exist in Windermere- understandably it’s busy but a one way system needs to be implemented and the tables are meant to be 1 metre about not 10cm. Monster Munch burger- pls settle the debate which flavour crisp was this? Gluten free mussels came served with a loaf of bread (my brother is in agony) which the waitress seemed to know nothing about. We ordered two different mussel dishes and when they arrived, we queried about which dish was which to which our waitress replied “it’s one of them”. Interesting menu items eg popcorn cockles and beans on toast with a hint of garlic. Aggressive signage included “complaints department 300 miles away” and “choices: have it or leave it” really unusual approach to hospitality. Decor was intimidating (sugar looked like Chrystal meth, this could be triggering for customers). Made our day because it was all slightly hilarious

Our mussels are gluten free but the accompaniment is bread and I can only apologise that the chef did not take this off the plate. As far as the Monster Munch burger is concerned I cannot understand what the debate was about - we use Monster Munch crisps and these can be any flavour. Thank you for your review.

Really impressed! 😊 on a busy Saturday night we were worried we mightn’t get in as we hadn’t booked but the friendly staff showed us to a lovely table within ten mins of waiting which is only a short wait considering how packed all the pubs and restaurants were on a Saturday night. Service was quick and the food was absolutely delicious and hot! Reasonably priced - our two meals, one side and two large soft drinks was under £40 which is great for a meal in the Lakes. The food, staff and atmosphere was all great! The atmosphere was lively but not too loud, the toilets were in a lovely clean condition and the whole vibe was great. No complaints!

We visited on a Sunday morning and I cannot be happier about our breakfast and service. The place is located beautifully and the atmosphere inside was really nice and lively. Food was delishmakous, I had a freshly cooked roll with egg and bacon and my friends had a full English breakfast which they were very happy about! The nicest thing about Brown Sugar was the aesthetic of the place and the impeccable service from Florin and the guys who served us, and took really good care of us, they told us about Windermere and the local attractions and they made sure we had everything we needed, it was so nice to feel so welcomed, they made our experience so much more pleasant, we very much appreciated the extra thought that has been put in the service! Thank you Florin and team Brown Sugar, we are definitely coming back to visit!

We were recommended brown sugar by staff at another bar as the best place in Windermere for steak. We managed to book a table quite late for a large group and they were more than accommodating, we actually ended up with the whole of the top floor, very useful as we had young children with us. The foot was delicious, I had the gammon steak and it came with eggs and pineapple, normally it’s a choice of either. Other members of our group changed some dishes which were quite awkward but not a problem for the kitchen. The bar staff and waiters were all very friendly so overall a very enjoyable night, would return
