Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A great little restaurant which is very popular so you do need to book. Lovely ambience and great service. While the menu is not extensive it has something for everyone and the food is delicious and well presented.

This restaurant is within a hotel, away from the main roads of Lincoln. It is a lovely walk up Steep Hill, by the Water Tower. We opted for A La Carte menu, which we thought was reasonably priced. The blue cheese souffle was divine. I...have a rating system for Sticky Toffee Pudding (STP), mainly based on the amount of sauce I get. No restaurant has yet managed a perfect 10. I've only given 4/5 as we weren't greeted on arrival. We ended up "hovering" around reception for about 5 minutes and it wasn't busy. After that the service was very good.More

Having had a wonderful meal here before we returned ..expecting yet another great meal but sadly not. The restaurant was empty apart from one other couple…the staff were as friendly as previously. I had the burger and my wife had the duck but we both...agreed on leaving how bland our food was…my burger was distinctly tasteless. It won’t put us off returning but we were disappointed …More

What has happened to the Tower? Living very nearby, this has been our favourite eatery for years. A friend and I dropped in for a drink and light lunch last Saturday. All day menu is now very basic. We both chose a prawn and salmon...light bite. What arrived was a small table spoon size of pate with a teaspoon of savoury jam on the side. Nothing to spread it on or even a few leaves. The taste was bitter, unpleasant and not of the menu stated ingredients. The texture was like dry goats cheese. We both left it as it tasted barely edible. Thankfully, we had ordered fries on the side. We asked our young waitress to express our reviews to the chef, but didn't hear anything back. On leaving, we were asked in the corridor if everything was o.k and once again politely expressed our feelings to the more senior member of staff who offered no more than her apologies. I'm really hoping it's a one off, if not it will be time to find a new localMore

We booked the restaurant for Sunday lunch. There was 14 of us, 6 of whom were children. The staff were excellent and very accommodating, the food was lovely and we all left very full. We really can’t recommend the Tower enough.

How terribly disappointing in every way I booked an a la carte dinner for 2 to celebrate our wedding anniversary this evening. The only times available when I booked were 6.00 or 6.15 pm . So l booked 6.15pm . I did receive a confirmation...email but didn't open it for obvious reasons because it said CONFIRMATION!!. When we arrived the no 38 Restuarant was empty ( they said it was fully booked) but we were directed to a small table in the middle of a rowdy sports bar. We went along with this and then they said you have to order your food at the bar yourself. I tried to do so in a state of some bewilderment only to be given the all day menu. I went to No 38 where I had actually booked and they gave me the la carte menu. I went back to the bar with my order only to be told we don't do a la carte in the bar !! I'm now at a total loss . Thought I'd booked a nice meal in a nice restaurant only to be shoved into a roudy Saturday night bar with pub food and no service. ....what is their problem . The bar area is absolutely packed with drinkers on a Saturday evening. Who in their right mind would think to put a 70+ couple celebrating their Anniversary with an a la carte meal in the middle ,literally, of a crowded pub. No 38 needs to decide what it is and not try to con people into booking it and then just to be given some inferior alternative in a pub. If they didn't have table when I booked they should have said so and not just put us in the roudy bar....how rude and inconsiderate could that have been. We have patronised no 38 for some years and introduced many others to it . Sadly the Tower now is just a very successful boozer with grub ,trying to masquerade as a quality restaurant in a room called 38 alogngside, and misguidedy thinks the two are interchangeable. At my ripe old age I can honestly say I have never been treated as a customer in such a desicable manner. My only conclusion very simply is GREED !!!. Rather than tell me they're fully booked they thought they could book into their pub just to keep the booking . Well thank you for ruining that celebration surprise. I won't be coming back . What a shame just from being too greedy and/thoughtless and not considering your actual customers especially,y those who are here all the year round. BE CAREFUL IF YOU BOOK HERE TO CHECK WHAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY GOING GET ....IT'S NOT ALWAYS WHAT YOU THINK OR EXPECTED SADLY, HOW VERY VERY DISAPPOINTING. Please Stop pretending No 38 is a high standard retuarant if its just a rowdy pub with an all day bar menu .More

Oh dear, what a great shame. We used to like dining here, but on our last two previous visits we were so disappointed. Family came over from the USA to see us and we took them to No 38 for a family get together. On...that last visit on Fathers day, it was a complete disaster. The Sunday roast was inedible and the Yorkshire puddings were all but cremated. This was followed by ice cream served on warm plates. After complaining they reduced the bill, but I would have been happy to have paid the full amount or a little bit more if the meal was acceptable. The staff were very nice, but the food was as poor as it gets and most of it was left on the plates (x6). Unfortunately this experience has meant we will never dine here again. A complete waste of money. Sorry for this review, but it’s true!More

We went here for Sunday lunch and because the restaurant was full we were put in the bar next to an open door out onto the terrace. Prices were the same in bar and restaurant. We soon had people from the terrace using the door...as a short cut despite a chair blocking use. Yhis key to people's backsides in our faces as they squeezed past. When Sunday lunch came it was cold and yorkshire puddings like dough. We sent it back and tired of waiting told staff we were leaving. We were nit charged for drinks or startersMore

We ate in the very pleasant ambience of the bar. Candles on the tables were a nice touch. A TV was showing sport but not intrusively and the bar was welcoming and felt comfortable for all kinds of folk including workmen. The service was excellent...and there was a wide choice of dishes. We chose from the very reasonably priced menu offering 2 courses for £18 and were impressed by the presentation and quality of the food. This was our first time in Lincoln but will certainly eat here again if / when we return. Got to mention the real ales eg Ossett Brewery White Rat. Spot on. The bill was ver reasonable.More
