Nestled in the historic charm of Steep Hill, the Wig & Mitre restaurant is a favorite for its prime location near the Cathedral, celebrated for its local flair. While the food receives mixed reviews, with some guests praising the flavorful dishes and others noting quality and service inconsistencies, the atmosphere consistently delights diners with its warmth and traditional decor. Service experiences vary, with commendations for friendliness but also critiques of slowness. Opinions on value also diverge, balancing commendable food and service against concerns regarding pricing and portions.

Visited here for the Welly Wednesday with some friends tonight, heard very good reviews so was looking forward to it. We arrived 20 mins early but was promptly shown to a table, after a while our drinks order was taken and they arrived soon after. However the waiter just put the tray down and walked off whilst grabbing one of the drinks to give to another table and knocked the tray in the process. Our food orders were taken a shortly after, I went for the cheese soufflé to start and beef wellington for main. The cheese soufflé was lovely, i had high hopes for the mains after hearing great reviews... Unfortunately it didn't hit the mark! The pastry was soggy, the beef was chunky but well done and the potatoes lacked flavour and we're burnt. Overall an average meal, don't think I would have been happy to pay full price but the service was pretty good given there only appeared to be one waiter.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our lunch in the Wig & Mitre. The establishment is old fashioned and welcoming which is a pleasant change from the often seen false aging of modern establishments. We found the ambience relaxing, the seating was comfortable and we had ample space. The staff that served our food and those behind the bar were pleasant and helpful and corteous The quality of the food presented was very high, the portion sizes were ample. The cost of the meal was not the cheapest but the quality was evident so no complaints there. Overall a nice place to gave a relaxed meal in.

Being Italian, it's always tricky to be satisfied of food abroad. However, the Wig & Mitre, situated right on top of the steep hill in Lincoln, gave us the best local experience we could hope for. We booked a table through a very polite receptionist on the phone and were welcomed in by two waiters who showed us our table on the upper floor. Food was filling and tasty (we had a cheese soufflé and a steak), and we literally melted over desserts (Eton Mess and Chocolate sponge cake). Service was basic but attentive and absolutely not intrusive, which we appreciated. All in all, we had a lovely night and would highly recommend. We'll surely come back.

We have eaten at The Wig a number of times and always had decent food. Today we ordered from the ‘specials’ menu. My partner said his prawns in his starter were still frozen and had chunks of lettuce from the stalk that should not be served. We opted for the Sea Bream which was minuscule and full of bones. The broccoli was watery and cold. The cheddar mash was ok but overall the rest had put me off eating. Our daughter has the roast beef which she couldn’t chew because it was very poor quality so she went hungry too. I declined a pudding but noted another person in our party said the custard was cold. Overall the whole meal was highly disappointing and there didn’t appear to be any quality control or pride in what was being served. Our table was cleared whilst my father was still eating and my nephew (who is very young) had his plate removed and we had to ask the waiter to leave it because he was still eating :( My daughter and niece really wanted some water but our table wasn’t given an option for water on the table ..... it’s the little things that make a difference but if that is lacking along with the quality of food I am sorry to say I can not recommend The Wig & Mitre.

We were so looking forward to a nice meal here, but it was lacking in every area. A chair at our table was filthy and had to be changed, my sister was sat less than a metre away from another diner, even though the restaurant was empty (we were sat upstairs). One menu between 4 of us, no one came to take a drinks order. The padded seats looked very dirty. Massive cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, and loads of cobwebs on the wall lights. It clearly hadn't been cleaned in a long time. We ordered 2 beef wellingtons and 2 burgers, one with no salad - both came with no salad. The beef wellington was very very small, the beef was overcooked. The dauphinoise potatoes had no cream or cheese, and were burnt in places. I don't think they were fresh. The burger buns were very soggy. We couldn't get out of there quick enough if I am honest, it felt dirty and I left hungry, The bill wasn't itemised so we had to ask the server to split it down. I am certain i was overcharged - the server really had no idea what he was doing, No track and trace.

Popped in for dinner this evening on the strength of past visits; definitely a change in ownership/management/chef, which has sadly brought the quality right down, and sadly so with the service as well. Menu’s are particularly limited compared to how it was prior to covid, both food and drink, and while we didn’t have any alcohol, the wine list is considerably second rate when prior to lockdown, it was one of the best in Lincoln. Food was…meh. Gammon, Egg and chips came out with the eggs severely over cooked and burnt around the edges, some chips uncooked all the way through, and while the gammon was fine, there was no steak knife provided. Salmon fish cake was full of bones and served on a sad bed of kale, with another rubbery egg for good measure. We would have raised the points with the staff but despite one young girl being busy (serving the 4 or 5 other tables in), the two older members of staff were pretty disinterested. Even when we asked for the bill, we weren’t shown it; just presented with the card machine and a price (we were however asked if we wanted the card receipt, I feel reluctantly). Now I know we’re in the epicentre of covid here in Lincoln, and to be fair, I don’t know if the poor girl has been working for 10 days straight (in which case I’d have been hacked off too), but a smile wouldn’t go amiss; it’s hard to see a face like a smacked a*se through a mask but by god, she pulled that off perfectly. Paid up and left, but I’d have been better off spending £20 less and making it at home; at least I can cook an egg properly.

We are so sorry you were disappointed by your recent visit. Emerging from the pandemic, making refurbishments and building a new team has proved to be very challenging, we are however making progress, the team is beginning to "gel". We do hope you will revisit and enjoy the improvements.

I’ve been in this pub three times, and every time I had an absolutely great experience. Firstly, it’s not too busy, so you can come at pick time with no booking, and they’ll find a spot for you. Also staff is incredibly nice and helpful. Secondly, Food is amazing. In particular, Sunday roast and burgers! Burgers are handmade, what I really appreciate not just because of the superb quality, but also due my specific allergy to onions. Really loved this place, now it’s become a tradition for us to visit it every Sunday, as Sunday roast is simply stunning for a very affordable price.

Coming from the main shopping area, once you have conquered " that hill" this great pub towards the top greets you. Situated very close to the cathedral, The Wig and mitre packs character. Lovely staff, relaxed atmosphere and good food at reasonable prices make this a good place to stop. Our food was very good and the staff member serving on the day was very chatty with my daughter and told us a little about the surrounding area. A cracking little pub. Please look after our pubs. Visited October 2020.

Once upon a time this was a top notch dining venue, not anymore. We had the Sunday lunch menu in the upstairs restaurant . Only 2 other tables were occupied. We waited at the bar to be seated, the young man after several minutes said he would be with us soon, several more minutes later he took us to the table. We sat with our plastic coated menu, but ordered from the specials board, 2 courses for £14.95. We sat, far too long waiting for our drinks, the starters came first and I had to say we hadn’t had our drinks yet. The table next to us still had dirty pots on ,and the serviettes littered on the floor. The room could do with a good clean and redecoration, cobwebs hang from the ceiling like trimmings. The food was just ok, the service terrible. What a shame.

Has totally changed and lost the plot. A group of us dine here bi monthly and until recently been good. The staff seen to have chabged apart from one young lady who remains so lovely professional and helpful. The rude waiter however came to see where some of our group were (at 540 for preordered dining at 6 so totally irrelevant) as if the place was going to be mad busy , when we said we don't know he snapped do you not have phones ? Wine is now £10 a glass , and nothing amazing. Food was mostly OK or good if not plentiful for some and is now expensive. Sadly our last visit and given there's a dozen of us that's a fair bit of income lost I'd have thought. Unsurprisingly rest of the restaurant not busy and chilly to be Frank.

this was the second visit this month and I'm sad to say that although the food is beautifully presented, my mains of kedgeree was little more than a starte, only warm and totally lacking in taste, we asked for parmesan - "I don't think we have any"!! some thin sliced cheese arrived and that together with salt and pepper - which we had to ask for, made it tasty. The food did not resemble hot in any way. An other member of the party said their mashed potato with the sausages was cold. One person said "Well Im not coming here again" Such a shame as it is a beautiful venue, full of historical character, terrific position by the Castle Square. Staff polite and helpful. But really - supper is more than a starter and hot food should be hot, condiments on table with the food . . . . . .I will give it one more try but this was disappointing. Also kedgeree was the only vegtarian option and service was slow. Fortunately we gave ourselves plenty of time as we knew this and were going to an event.

Just visited the Wig and Mitre for the second time, our last visit being a mid week evening in March and today a Sunday afternoon. On our first visit, I enjoyed a very tasty well cooked Sirloin, my partner ordered the Butternut squash Risotto as this was the only veg option available. She said it was ok but mainly tasted of veg stock ( squash being a pretty tasteless veg ). Moving on to today, I ordered the half roast chicken, I must admit, based on my last meal I was expecting much better, I thought the chicken would arrive nicely roasted with crisp brown skin. Sadly, not what I got. The chicken must of been roasted under cover as the skin was pale and soggy. The veg was ok as was the Yorkshire pud, but nothing to shout home about. My partner order the risotto again as this was still, the only option available. Sadly, she didn’t like the taste at all so couldn’t eat it. I tried it and had to agree, it didn’t taste pleasant. They apologised and offered to do a Cauliflower steak and veg as an alternative. However by the time it had arrived myself and my grand daughter had both finished our meals. My partner ate some of this meal but the original risotto had put her right off to be honest. The management did apologise once more and didn’t make a charge for her meal. I would like to return here as I do like the pub and location but will not do so until the menu improves, it is advertised that it is to be refurbished mid May so let’s hope they refurbish the menu as well. They should realise that there is no such thing as vegetarian food, it’s just food that vegetarians can eat. With so many great places to eat here I really do hope they get it right as we do like to eat out often and live the fact that they are a very dog friendly establishment.

I'm so sorry that on this occasion we have failed to meet your expectation, please rest assured that I have personally taken your comments on board, as you mentioned we are closed for a 2 week refurbishment from the 9th May and are also launching a new menu very soon, so please watch this space. Thank-you for mentioning that you would return and I would personally like to take care of your booking when you revisit and if you could reach out to me personally at the Wig & Mitre I would appreciate it very much. Kind Regards Chris Shepherd General Manager

This was our second visit for Sunday lunch, and unfortunately to say it was yet again a let down. On our first visit my plate and most of the food were cold when served at the table. No staff came over to ask the usual “is everything ok with your meal?” And I didn’t see any in close vicinity to call over. My partner went over to pay, and then brought it to there attention, in all fairness she was given a £5.00 voucher off the next mea, which is why we attempted a second visit, and yet again the plates were served cold with the food only remaining Luke wam through the heat off the gravy!! I’m no cabbage mechanic, but his is the first establishment that serves food on cold plates. Needles to say, we will not be making the error of a third visit until they install a plate warmer or at least place the food under heat lamps before serving. Apart from that no other complaints.

The Wig and Mitre used to be one of the best meals on Steep Hill but that has long gone. We went for Sunday dinner just as a treat and it has nothing on The Five Bells at Bassingham. I chose the roast pork Sunday dinner but it was extremely average. You just want crispy roast potatoes, crispy pork crackling and the veg to be cooked correctly but it just wasn’t. I’ve had better Sunday dinners round friends houses and won’t be going back in a hurry and just to add insult to injury, we were sat next to the toilets which you could smell quite easily. Not a nice experience.

Thank you for taking a moment to give us an honest review, feedback is always appreciated! We're so sad to hear that your roasts were not up to your standards and you weren't happy with your seat - we would have more than happily found you another place! We've noted the things you suggest we need to improve on; we do change our menus throughout the year so we do hope you'll be tempted to try us again with some new dishes at a later time!

Called in when exploring the old part of town. Lovely old pub. Had the haddock and prawn bake which was absolutely delicious. Made with gnocchi and lots of mixed fish with crunchy breadcrumb and cheese topping. My husband had the faggots which were a good sized portion served with mash and rich gravy. Friendly staff.
