A lovely afternoon spent with friends. Great atmosphere and excellent customer service. We enjoyed lovely starters, an outstanding Sunday Roast dinner and one friend had the Cod dish and this was followed by a delicious dessert, accompanied with an excellent selection of wine. We all...agreed our meal was outstanding. A fabulous way to spend a very wet afternoon for a catch up with friends. Definitely would recommend!!More

First time at Barnacle, but won’t be the last. Food was incredible. All courses were delicious, with the stand-out dish for me being the Salt Marsh lamb with anchovy, goats’ curd and black olive. Just stunning. Relaxed atmosphere and surroundings, it’s a gem of a...place in Duke Street Market, with a standard of food which makes it truly stand out. Staff welcoming, knowledgeable and friendly. Wonderful experience. Go!More

This was the most disappointing restaurant experience I’ve had in a considerable time. Really surprised to see the great reviews in here, honestly. The food was not restaurant quality - it lacked flavour and some food was very poorly cooked. Furthermore, the menu was not...well thought out - for example, the ‘snacks’ at the start of the meal consisted of boiled potatoes with cheese on them (no embellishment whatsoever, literally boiled potatoes with a sprinkling of cheese!), then another plate of boiled potatoes with an Asian style sauce (which was tasty) and then 2 huge slabs of focaccia (which was absolutely nothing like the structure of a focaccia). At this point, I’m sure things can’t get much worse, but then roll on the starter. The driest, saddest piece of brisket you’ve ever seen, literally could not cut through it with a knife, on top of yet more bread! Was quite possibly the worst dish I’ve ever been served in a restaurant. Main was good, I had the lamb rump. The desert was okay, but nothing special or especially tasty. Again, was not restaurant quality. Overall, an extremely disappointing experience. Don’t waste your money and choose one of the many other wonderful restaurants in Liverpool.More

Good Food, and very attentive table service, however the experience we were looking forward to was blighted by the waves of smoke coming up to the mezzanine level from the barbecue food being cooked in the market place for different restaurants downstairs. The air con...unit that was right above our heads at the first table that was laid for us, was pumping out cold air and and it could not be adjusted, therefore the attentive waiter promptly moved us to an adjacent table. It seems a shame to detract from the food and the great service, but at £295 for 4 involving amuse bouche, mains and just one bottle of Quincy, we're expecting a bit more control over other aspects of the experience when dining.More

To celebrate our anniversary we booked at this modern, buzzy restaurant. Short menu consisting of ‘amuse bouches”, “starters”, “mains” and “desserts”. Friendly waiter took our order for starter and main with a view to see if we wanted a dessert later. Unbidden, the waiter brought...us an amuse bouche consisting of two pieces of bread, some whipped cheese and lemon oil. As we hadn’t ordered this we assumed it was a gift from the establishment. Following our meal which was really nice, we were presented with the bill. The numbers didn’t add up and it was clear that they had charged us £14 for this unordered course. We queried it and the formerly friendly waiter turned surly and said there was no way to deduct the amount. We refused to pay and after further rounds of “you need to pay it” and “no we won’t”, the staff member suggested they could remove the service charge as it amounted to roughly the same. I agreed to that. Then another staff member attended and said he’d removed the charge for the amuse bouche as we’d originally asked and we paid the bill. It was needless unpleasantness on our special night due to either sharp practice or incompetence.More

Exceptional food both in content and presentation which provided a fine dining menu in a more relaxed setting that was great value. Can’t fault this, just amazing. Was looking forward to this but was confused with the menu. Three courses up to 18:15pm then the ‘Excellence’ menu, which was advertised as the same three courses plus charcuterie, bread and a mouse bouche for £45 or £52. This was classed as four or...five courses, depending on whether you had all three main courses or just two. I realised I could have three courses for £39.50 so emailed to ask why it would be £12.50 for bread, charcurterie and amouse bouche, especially when they tend to be free in most places. No answer. When we arrived it was nice that they’d noted our booking request re seating. The menus came and now it’s only three or four courses for the same prices as above. So what are we getting now? Anyway, we ordered a starter and main each and before they came we received one slice of bread each with a small dollop of something to spread on it (to be shared). The bread was doughy and not particularly nice (which I did say to our server). With it came a tiny vessel with savoury beetroot liquid in it (about as much as a double shot of alcohol). And that was it - the only difference between ordering three courses for £39.50 and the excellence menus is a slice of bread and a tiny drink for £12.50. But you have no choice. Anyway, starters were small and OK, though my mackerel dish was predominantly cucumber. My hake main was also small and had far too many dry-textured beans underneath. More tomatoes would have balanced it better, not to mention padding it out. But my wife’s lamb was inedible. She really struggled to cut it and, as they’ll know, left a lot of it. Again, we made this known. We passed on dessert as the choice of three on offer did nothing for us and we were pretty unimpressed by this stage. I’ve mentioned the portions because by now we’ve essentially had a two course meal plus a slice of bread each for NINETY QUID plus service charge. You’d expect proper proportions for that, not ‘sharing dish’ sizes. With a bottle of the cheapest red, a glass of rosé and the service charge it came to a HUNDRED AND FIFTY QUID! The service charge was removed on request and we paid a tip to our server, Declan, direct as he’d been great. Unfortunately we were told all tips are shared regardless, as he alone deserved it. I wasn’t surprised there were only two other couples in the restaurant with us. This place needs to have a serious rethink on what it’s offering and what’s a fair price for it.More

If you want to try Barnacle you should come quickly. I expect it to be closed soon - one of the worst meals I have had in the last decade. Oysters drowned in cream cheese, fatty beef and bland chicken. Staff who seemed outraged at...the fact we had anything less than a stellar experience. I would estimate the chances of me being bent over the toilet bowl at 4am at around 60% - when I questioned the freshness of the oysters I was told, “yes, they are not fresh.” Quality establishment.More

Nothing short of a full ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for a special Sunday roast lunch. Everything is to the highest standard, food, service, ambiance and staff. An experience not to be missed and our return will be much sooner than we allowed since our last visit. Highly recommended...to all who have not previously enjoyed a visit to Barnacle on the mezzanine in The Duke Street Market venue.More
