Maggie Mays was recommended to me for a good place to get some real Scouse; Liverpool’s “National” dish. It’s a form of stew similar to Lancashire hotpot. £6 for a big bowl served traditionally with crusty bread and pickled red cabbage or beetroot. If that’s not your want, this place offers many great home made dishes. All great belly busters at real world prices (obvious by the fact it’s full of locals). When we were there, there was also a German film crew filming. Sorry about the pic, but started eating before I thought of a photo.

My friend and I visited on 14 September along with her baby daughter. The food is basic but excellent value. When it arrived it was hot, a rare thing really. The child's meal my friend ordered for her daughter was excellent value for money and nicely cooked. We ordered two large glasses of orange juice and it was exactly as it said on the tin large and quality. Second time we have visited, we just had a pot of tea last time. The staff were also excellent with my friend's daughter. Recommended.

This place is my go to. When you see chain restaurants like Leaf accross the road, which give you dry toast (no spread!) when you ask for a vegan breakfast...and people are queueing to get in, you ask yourself what's wrong with this world. Maggie May's is popular but always a calm, lovely inviting environment and the lady behind the counter always remembers my order :) (because it is an independent place run by real people who care) not just another soulless chain restaurant. No queues to get in, no inconvenience. It's a place I can go to to relax and think. Like a little refuge when I want to dive out of the chaos that occurs on bold street. So glad they are there. Prices are so cheap too- you'll never pay £12 for a breakfast there. Decent, honest prices for simple humble and traditional food. You get exactly what you want. Not someone trying to dress up beans on toast as a gourmet meal and charging you £20 for it like most places do these days. Whether you're local or not, you need to go there :) it's special. Lovely place.

One of the first cafe's to open on this Saturday morning, 9-45am, staff ready and waiting with a pleasant smile. Maggie's is quite simply 5 stars, tables, menus and even the windows all spotlessly clean, food served with a smile, good quality , good potion size and value for money. Nothing more to say really. Thank you and well done.

My daughter and I were on a shopping trip and thought we would pop into this cafe bar for a quick bite to eat. We were served really promptly and the staff were lovely. I ordered the soup of the day and my daughter ordered a breakfast which she was quite happy with. I was really disappointed with the soup - it was supposed to be minestrone soup but it was just like dish water! It was awful. There was no substance to it at all. The small coffees were served in very small cups which was also disappointing.

I was visiting Liverpool and definitely wanted to try Scouse. After reading the reviews of the scouse, the customer service and the vibe of Maggie Mays I thought it would be ideal. The vibe was correct, it looked like a place that “locals” would go to, even though it was on what it seemed to be one of the most “foodie” streets of Liverpool. I was happy to go and order at the counter but found the lady there very brusque and when I asked a question about the option of red cabbage or beetroot with it (what she would recommend , she sort of sighed and gave the impression of just wanting me to order and sit down. The food was prompt and it was edible apart from the meat, which luckily there wasn’t much of which was like leather and not tasty at all. I know this was a paupers dish back in the day like the Irish stew, but unlike the Irish stew I’ve had in recent times in Ireland the quality of Maggie Mays version was a little too authentic for me!

I chose Maggy Mays because all of the other places in Bold street were not open until lunch time and it was 11-15am. The staff were friendly. The surroundings are nostalgic. the food was absolutely A1. I got an all day breakfast. The egg was done to perfection and the bacon sausage and black pudding was above average. I’m glad I found this gem and will definitely be back.

I visited Maggie Mays today for the first time. i wanted to try the famous "Scouse" i was so disappointed. there was "one" small cube of lamb in my dish...so basically it was "blind scouse" a total waste of money. i should have sent it back as it was an insult. i will not return to this resaurant ever. The only positive thing was that the restaurant was CLEAN.

I entered after wanting a nice sandwich or toastie after looking over Liverpool we found Maggie mays cafe. We approached the counter with a very unenthusiastic lady taking our order. After ordering for two drinks a chicken panini with fries and a ham and cheese toastie with fries. It took 20 minutes to turn up, and honestly it was the saddest meals we have set our eyes on, considering the way social media has improved the standards of food and standards of appearance, it clearly hasn’t affected the bland and stale approach to food here. The panini had a single slice of chicken in each half of the panini to cover the unbuttered bread. And a side of salad. The cheese and ham toastie was dry and lifeless and limp with again a small side salad. The fries that came with the meal, were still oozing fat from the fryer. My partner couldn’t eat her meal. We were asked if we would like condiments and when receiving the mayonnaise, the holder was near empty. The girl that handed it too us was very absent minded and detached to the job. The whole meal cost £28 and for the price was extremely underwhelming and for the actual cost not worth it. The atmosphere was none existent and very depressing. I love to give positive reviews for places but me and my partner left feeling very disheartened from the experience and still wanting food.

We loved this place. The food and service was great, and the prices were reasonable. It doesn't open until about 09:45, so ideal for those wanting a later breakfast. Breakfast or lunch in a friendly place On Bold Street, very close to our base. It is an inviting, friendly eating house - A variety of meals and home made "scouse" Maggie May's for us strongly held sway As our out and out preference every day

We often chose scouse when we eat out for lunch at many cafes and restaurants in Liverpool and decided to go to Maggie May’s again giving it another chance after being disappointed some years ago. We were very disappointed again as the dish of scouse I received had one very small piece of meat in it and my wife’s had 2. I sent mine back for more meat. The waitress apologised and brought another plate of it back and unbelievably this replacement had no meat in it. My wife didn’t want me to send it back again or ask for something else so we left but I mentioned it to a waitress and she just said during the course of the day the meat disintegrates into the vegetables. Absolute nonsense. There was no sign of meat at all. We won’t be going there again feeling totally dis satisfied and ripped off

We used to always go to Cafe 53 on Bold Street for a budget friendly bit of lunch when in Town but this closed down when the joint owners retired (and has since become a string of different styles of eateries, none of which have survived). Now, we tend to go to Maggie Mays. It's ok.

Supposedly recommended for its scouse. We ordered two and both came with a single piece of meat. The rest was a fairly tasteless vegetable hash. The place is airy and spacious and cheery. Don't have the scouse - it's nothing like the pictures.

Regrettably I cannot the Maggie May's café a good review. This is solely based on value for money. The surroundings were nice, the service was fine, but....my friend ordered scouse and I was taken aback by how small her served portion was. It looked child size and my friend certainly isn't one. Also there was no meat in the scouse. It was 'blind' scouse as we say, and it wasn't advertised as a vegetarian meal on the menu. The price she paid for that which she received was very poor value for money in both our views. We will not be returning.

We found ourselves wandering down Bold Street on our recent visit to Liverpool craving a hot drink and a good honest sandwich. There were plenty eateries but not what we were looking for. Then we saw it Maggie May's. A traditional, busy popular greasy spoon serving good home made comfort food. We were tempted by lots on the menu but stuck to what we wanted a hot drink and a sandwich. There was a bit of a wait to order at the counter but once our order was in we didn't have long to wait. Our sandwiches were just what we wanted. No fuss and served with a simple but delicious salad. Glad we found this place.
