About
Established in 1826, The Duke of York sits at the top of St John's Wood High Street and still retains much of its original charm. Inside, it's a warm, welcoming space with a bar and casual dining area usually full of well-heeled locals and a more secluded separate dining room that is popular with a post-work crowd looking for great food in a relaxed setting. The comprehensive wine list is regularly updated and offers a good mix of European favourites and new world alternatives. Classic dishes like beer-battered cod with yorkie fries; beef and Guinness sausages with mash potato and onion gravy; and chargrilled rib eye steak feature on the all-day menu. The Sunday Roasts are also highly recommended.

After an appointment in St John’s Wood, my friend and I stopped by in the High St. to have lunch. The Duke of York was located in the corner and looked inviting. The traditional pie was great and the portion was rather generous. I commented to the waiter that it’s too big a portion but nevertheless, it was delicious. He said it was home made meaning cooked in the pub and it tasted that. The service was fantastic too. I think the waiter/bar tender knew we were not locals so he took the time to welcome us and asked how our food was. Will definitely go back there again and recommend this pub/restaurant. The decor is cozy too.

When we're in the area we always visit this pub. To be fair, it's always been brilliant. However, it's under new management and it's even better now. Nice wine list, not expensive. Good beers and they serve food too. The customer service is amazing. One special feature I liked was, rather than bar staff all being behind the bar itself, a couple of them are out front roaming. When they spot you've nearly finished your drink they pop over and ask if you want another and they'll bring it over. Genius idea! Much more civilised. Saves having to stand at a bar waiting to be served. It's how they do things on the continent and I'm pleased the new management have started doing it here.

Impeccabile and friendy service, very clean and with a really interesting selection of food. It varies from the great classic british food to some spanish tapas and a good selection of steaks and burgers. We had the sunday roast and it was one of the best I've ever had in London and for a very good price! You can easily book a table in advance and there is table service.

It's a restaurant chain, the atmosphere is OK, but the food isn't great. My wife had a burrata salad which was almost frozen when it arrived at the table, I had a shrimp fish and chip combo. Soft and flavorless fries, very ordinary fish and shrimp. for the price I should have gone for a hamburger! Maybe the bar is interesting but forget the food

The price for the product is criminal. I paid £21 for a tepid roast which consisted of one carrot, some uncooked sprouts, some quite nice potatoes and an overdone Yorkshire pudding. Extra veggies were £6 on top of that. My cousin paid for pigs in blankets and received four disgusting cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon for £6. The waitress didn’t know the beer menu which is poor considering the choice is small. The place has a decent following and was relatively busy so for some it clearly ticks the boxes. But not for me. I’m still shocked by the cost. Also they add in a service charge which really annoys me. I’m a good tipper! Don’t assume I won’t tip! If you insist on adding on a shameful hidden cost then just do it up front and add it to the price on the menu! A very poor pub.

Went here after the cricket, as you can imagine it’s quite busy on a match day which might suggest why the bar staff can seemingly say and do as they please, it’s pure arrogance. I gave a simple order to the man behind the bar: 1 Guinness, 1 Birra Moretti and a Vodka lemonade. My brother who was standing next to me, requested to add lime cordial to the vodka lemonade. We noticed the barman then grabbed a fourth cup and started pouring vodka into it. Realising that he’s misunderstood the request, we stopped him to avoid more waste. He slammed the cup down and began waving his arms around in a stroppy attitude infested meltdown. When I challenged his behaviour, another barman told me “watch it mate” and I was very much made to feel I had done something horribly wrong. It was one of them incidents that i wish I was recording. Mistakes happen. It was a busy bar on a hot day and I completely accept that…but Christ alive do not blame the customer for your mistake and then follow it up acting like a petulant brat, horrendous customer service in what was otherwise a nice bar.

We have visited a number of times and always had a good experience - both food and service. This time was definitely not as good. Food wise, the burgers were good, but chips were not hot (perhaps been sitting for too long?) and the sea bass, although cooked well, was sitting on top of leaves that were dripping in oil and made it inedible. Another observation was when two customers arrived with a dog. They were all clearly known to staff and once seated, placed the dog on the bench seat only for it to start walking along the bench seat. Staff provided a bowl of water and a number of staff were patting the dog, and observed not washing hands afterwards. Luckily the one that served our food, we saw him use an alcohol gel, otherwise we were going to ask to send our meals back. Allowing dogs (that are clearly not service dogs) in to an establishment when other people are eating is not great practice. As a result, and because I experience allergy from dogs, sadly we will not be returning to The Duke of York in the future.

I went into this pub yesterday and asked if I could book a table for 8 pm for dinner for two tonight. The lady who took care of me was very pleasant and professional. She took my personal details and confirmed the booking. When I arrived today the waitress who was serving us was extremely rude from the outset. Very early on I had some questions and her response was ‘chill out’. I was aghast by such behaviour. During the evening whilst she was at the bar she was singing, dancing and very jovial. I mentioned it to the other person in my party and we agreed that she appeared intoxicated. We decided not to order a starter and went straight for main. The food that we were served was extremely tasty. After we had finished around 9pm we asked for the dessert menu. Without any apology we were told and I quote ‘my kitchen is now closed’. I was extremely surprised that the pub had accepted a dinner booking for 8pm but by 9pm they were no longer serving dessert. I would have expected the waitress at some point to have come over to us and told us that even though we might still be eating, if we did want a dessert then now would be the time to order as the kitchen would be closing shortly. It was very disappointing that we were expecting a full meal which was cut short. All in all I can’t remember the last time I received such appalling customer service. Luckily there was another restaurant nearby that we passed on our way home and we had dessert there with exceptional customer service.

We were enjoying a pleasant walk around St Johns Wood and called in The Duke of York for a drink. The Barman was in the wrong environment, he was miserable, expressionless and unwelcoming. I ordered a Coke and a Tonic Water and that seemed to deepen his indignation. He served the coke in a glass and just put a bottle of tonic in front of us. I almost laughed and asked him for a glass. He silently nonchalantly slid a glass over. I didn't want to unsettle him further by asking for ice and lemon.

This pub has been my favourite and my local go to for the last 10 years. It has recently changed ownership and I'm so upset to have experienced that it has changed completely. The food was still good (apparently they kept the same chef), the lovely staff was still the same... but the atmosphere was completely different and you could feel it. It used to feel like home and family and now it feels like a business and you're just a number. All the decor which made the pub cozy and fun is gone - it's become a sterile, cold environment. Goodbye Duke of York, you'll be sorely missed. BTW: hand sanitiser dispenser was empty! One of the many details that made us all think that all that matters here is the bottom line - not the customer experience.

Been coming here mainly during test matches for many years. Always good service and amazing food. A warm welcome by Enzo the previous manager. Went yesterday during the Test match. Poor wine choices, in fact half the wines on the list were unavailable. Wine served in very cheap thin plastic glasses. Condiments stuffed into cheap plastic cups. Burger horribly dry and over done. Unfriendly staff and a new management team seemingly uninterested. COVID seems a convenient excuse but I doubt it! We won’t be going back.

Visited here today for the first time. A nice little place but the member of staff with the Apollo 11 jumper who served us could do with some people skills. It’s not hard to smile and make new customers feel welcomed.

Visited after a 'Beatles walk' and we were revived by some decent beer, wine and food. Had a fantastic artichoke and philli cheese dip as part of shared starter platter and mains were substantial particularly the pies and chips (wedges really). I had an ostrich burger: nice but I was still processing it a couple of days later! Good service from our Italian waitress. Recommended.

Can't remember the last time I had such unfriendly service, bordering on rude, when ordering a drink from the guy at the bar. "Hi, how are you?" Grumpy look, nothing said. No "What can I get you?" or anything similar. "Looks like summer's over (it was cold and raining)." Sullen look, maybe like I was speaking a foreign language. Ordered a pint. "Six twenty-five (or whatever it was)." "Sorry?" (Expecting a repeat but with "please" at the end.) Grumpier look. "Six twenty-five." Finished my drink and went somewhere else.

I recently took three friends there while our lockdown was relaxed. It was my first outing inside anywhere during the pandemic. The staff and absolutely delightful, jolly, helpful and efficient and they have taken every possible precaution to ensure the safety of patrons. You wear a mask to reach your - well spaced - table and have to put it back on if you leave your table. Menu is standard gastro-pub fare, but the execution is a cut above standard. My companions and I all chose hamburgers, which were excellent. Great atmosphere, warm and relaxed. I am so sad that the Duke of York will have to close and wish all the staff the very best. I hope the owners are being generous to their wonderful staff.
