I had dinner with my daughter and her partner and I don't think I have ever had a better vegetarian meal, the flavours and presentation were amazing and the service was excellent. The only criticism I have is that neither of us liked the coffee (espresso) but when we mentioned it they took it off the bill.

Vanilla Black has been on my list of places to eat in London for a number of years already and I finally got a chance to go. The food is beautifully served, not just food slopped on a plate. The selection is not very extensive, but there is a nice selection of menu items, some vegan, some not. The service... More

Wonderful classy vegetarian restaurant. When you are tired of Indian, Thai, and Middle Eastern as a veg/vegan this is a nice classy choice.

This is one of the most interesting restaurants in London, stunning flavours and combinations. Quiet and comfortable. I have taken several friends here who have been stunned by the quality and inventiveness of the food. Vegetarian cooking at its very best.

This was a lovely experience for me and my husband. Despite his love for meat he thoroughly enjoyed the meal and was definitely full after the three courses. The portions are on the smaller side but after 3 courses it was still plenty. Our waitress was incredible. It's a shame the concierge was such a miserable cow but it didn't... More

Came for a birthday dinner and left feeling a little disappointed and underwhelmed. The menu looks enticing, the service polite and surroundings comfortable. We both enjoy eating out and being veggie it's always great to go to a vegetarian restaurant. However our food tonight left us feeling neither delighted or full. Portion sizes are on the small side and some... More

I think some of the previous 3 star ratings have nailed it. In summary food looks pretty but doesn't taste great. I so wanted to like this place. The test - Would I take my friends? No! I hope they work on it and get the food right. Vegetarians need good restaurants.

This is a vegetarian only restaurant. No fish and obviously no meat. It's very nice decor wise. Clean, modern. The food is nice but we felt the dishes comprised of one ingredient cooked in many ways but not much else. If your dish had avocado then you had it in three or four ways and that's about it. The dishes... More

As a vegan it was dispiriting to witness such underseasoned food. Nothing tasted of anything. Presentation stuck in the 80s with portions so small it was laughable. Actually not that funny as bill.for 2 was 100 pounds with only 2 glasses of wine. YOU CAN DO MUCH, MUCH BETTER ELSEWHERE

Good service and ambience. However the food was just okay and served in small portions. Disappointed with the dessert.

Your mother's mantra of "eat your vegetables" probably never brought to mind dishes quite like this. Vanilla Black restaurant, originally from York but now located in the City of London near Chancery Lane, smashes the stereotype of bland, lentil-laden hippie dishes. Instead, Vanilla Black takes a modern, imaginative and ambitious approach to vegetarian cuisine. Result? It is the only vegetarian restaurant in London that's recommended in the Michelin Guide. At Vanilla Black, it's not "vegetarian cooking", it's "vegetable cuisine". The dining areas are spacious and done with art deco-esque flair, Vanilla Black's cool and comfortable dining room sets the stage for its innovative cuisine. Dishes such as hickory smoked duck egg and Ducketts Caerphilly pudding and sweet potato vindaloo with saffron risotto are sure to make an impression on even the most diehard carnivore. Vanilla Black's desserts like carrot cake and orange sorbet with crystallised coriander delight the palate.

Staying in City of London

Neighbourhood Profile
City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.
