Vanilla Black has been one of my favourite vegetarian restaurants for ten years now. I live in Sussex and work in London, so I can easily get to Vanilla Black near Chancery Lane tube. Our home is vegetarian. Vegetarian food can be hearty. Vanilla Black re-define the cuisine, no pasta bake or vegetable curry. They serve small portions in an... More

This place is a massive treat. As a vegetarian it's the most exciting restaurant you could hope to go to. It's now my 3rd visit and again massively impressed with the atmosphere, service and especially the food. This time had Lemon Ricotta and Leeks, Baked High Cross and Coffee and Coconut dessert- everything was simply incredible. I've never had vegetarian... More

Went for a birthday dinner with friends... everything was perfect. We were well taken care of by staff and the food was staggeringly good.

We have visited quite a few top vegetarian restaurants (Montali, the Gate, Cookies Cream Berlin) and Vanilla Black is certainly one of the best in our view. Wonderful flavours! Not cheap but worth it.

We felt the dishes just didn't work. The dishes were trying to be too complex, most dishes deconstructed with many flavours and textures that didn't jell together. Each dish seemed to have one flavour that just over powered others. The entrees we tried were the avocado dish (not great) and the lemon ricotta dish (quite nice). Main dishes we tried... More

A superb meal, everything such a delight and mix of flavours that we promptly bought the cookbook. Not that we think we can recreate the superb meal - but it inspired us -vegetarian and non-vegetarian alike, to wonderful flavours.

We had a three course meal that was so beautifully presented. The most memorable that we quite enjoyed were the frozen and charred avocado dish and the smoked egg. The homemade bread was superb. Service was great and atmosphere very romantic and warm. Overall, I found the ambiance and presentation were a bit let down by the flavor profiles. The... More

My partner and I are vegans. The vegan options were limited. The starter was very basic and could have been made at home without a lot of effort. The flavours were not good and the textures of some of the food on the main courses were off-putting. I think this is a very poor advert for vegetarian food, especially given... More

Dined here for lunch on Saturday 10 December 2016, with my wife, her twin sister (both veggies) and brother-in-law. As always the service was good and the food top notch. My wife was not that found of her main course, but that was more a question of tatste rather than anything else - I had the same and thought it... More

Imaginative vegetarian. Worth a trip. Cocktails were great. Bread and butter started off the meal with a high, wonderful soup, and interesting main courses. Left very satisfied.

Your mother's mantra of "eat your vegetables" probably never brought to mind dishes quite like this. Vanilla Black restaurant, originally from York but now located in the City of London near Chancery Lane, smashes the stereotype of bland, lentil-laden hippie dishes. Instead, Vanilla Black takes a modern, imaginative and ambitious approach to vegetarian cuisine. Result? It is the only vegetarian restaurant in London that's recommended in the Michelin Guide. At Vanilla Black, it's not "vegetarian cooking", it's "vegetable cuisine". The dining areas are spacious and done with art deco-esque flair, Vanilla Black's cool and comfortable dining room sets the stage for its innovative cuisine. Dishes such as hickory smoked duck egg and Ducketts Caerphilly pudding and sweet potato vindaloo with saffron risotto are sure to make an impression on even the most diehard carnivore. Vanilla Black's desserts like carrot cake and orange sorbet with crystallised coriander delight the palate.

Staying in City of London

Neighbourhood Profile
City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.
