This is my second visit in about as many years to the Pata Negra tapas bar in the Upper Richmond Road a short throw of a chorizo sausage from Putney (mainline) station. This Wednesday lunchtime saw a genteel clientele no doubt taking advantage of a set lunch featuring two courses for a mere £10, in addition to the standard a la carte and a separately printed list of specials. To my left an elderly well-spoken gent keen to linger over an additional glass or two long after he had finished his lunch. To my right an elderly Scottish couple finishing what was not immediately apparent upon any menu, namely a glorious seafood paella, unless this was a variant upon the penne with mussels, squid and prawns on the set menu, substituting rice for pasta. For my part I began with a lentil soup with chorizo whose description failed to do justice to the large steaming bowl featuring beans, carrots, greens as well as lentils and chorizo almost a Spanish variant on minestrone with some slices of toast in fr side. A main of liver and bacon came with more superbly fresh vegetables, this time broccoli, carrot and potato. It seemed churlish not to choose a chocolate mousse amongst desserts advertised upon a blackboard behind me. It came beautifully presented in a raised green bowl with occasional chocolate chips and a couple of wafers. A glass of rose and a double espresso were equally refreshing albeit accompanying different moments of a memorable and extraordinarily well-priced meal.

Para Negra or Black Hoof is perhaps not best translated for fear this Spanish restaurant might serve horsemeat Cornish pasties. It’s a quaint room with a slightly fusty atmosphere whose maitre d’ I’d a sort of larger than life extra from the 1970s sitcom Robin’s Nest. But he and his younger solemate in the kitchen are genuinely Spanish as is the tapas menu which expands lunchtimes (apart from Sundays when the stable door is locked) into a remarkable bargain of a lunch menu featuring two courses for £10. My wife and daughter both had ham croquettes, each plate containing five crunchy treats positioned like spokes around a central mound of mayonnaise, followed by salmon and new potatoes with broccoli beneath the same tomato sauce in which my penne main with squid and prawns was also swimming. Perhaps best of all though was my salmon tartare starter on a bed of avocado and lettuce. Almond tart and ice cream to share rounded off proceedings nicely.

This is an unassuming but authentic tapas eatery in Putney, South West London. The proprietor - Pepe - is always present and offers a range of dishes, including a well-priced daily menu. A credible wine list and a friendly atmosphere, both during the day and in the evening.

I rarely find myself in a position where service is so poor. I feel the need to write a review, but after seeing all the positive reviews myself before booking a table (and having high hopes) I feel it is necessary for people to understand what they are walking into. I admit it was hot, and busy but that is no excuse for the way we were treated. Upon arrival the waiter seemed to have forgotten our booking, and we had to wait 15 mins for our table. After sitting down we noticed a free table outside and asked to move, which we were told we couldn’t. Only to then have a walk in seated on that table. Not a great start. We eventually ordered our drinks and later our food, although not without feeling like a burden. To start, a lot of things on the menu were not available, including a basket of bread! Our food then arrived staggered, which I don’t usually mind too much but resulted in about a 30 min gap between our first dish, and our last. The waiter also made a mistake with our order, and when we asked about the missing dishes, made us feel like it was our fault. We then asked them not to worry about the final dish as we didn't want to wait another 30 mins, only to be greeted with shrugging, and eye rolling. When it came to paying our bill, we asked to remove the ‘optional’ service charge, only to be told that we couldn’t. The attitude from start to finish has left a very bitter taste, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. It is a real shame as it seemed to be a lovely local business that I would love to support, but alas I cannot. We were made to feel unwelcome, and like a nuisance.

We were looking forward to the dinner out given the rave reviews on trip advisor. Having had one of the worst experiences in a while, I’m not sure if the rest of the trip advisor reviews are written by Pepes friends?? The evening kicked off to a bad start, epilepsy inducing fairy lights that were eventually switched off after multiple requests. Oh wait, do not dare ask the two poor wait staff, who are not empowered to do anything and do not speak English. I am not sure what they are there to do as it doesn’t seem like much. They aren’t even allowed to take a drinks order. Pepe must. Except, Pepe cannot take an order for more than one thing at a time, disappearing hallway through you talking to him. At one point we tried to order some food, he pointed to the menu and then walked off ?! Halfway through a conversation. Never mind if you want to order two drinks, i eventually had to hobble to the bar on my crutches, only to be met with disdain. Onto the food, stale bread, a slop of meatballs on some sad looking white rice, a few measly pieces of greyish pork with some chips. Nothing too Spanish. He tried to make up for it with some shots of something and after eights, but what was meant to be a celebratory dinner, ruined You have been warned. Go at your own peril.

I'm seldom in Putney these days but when I do visit, this restaurant is my favourite eating place and on Wednesday I went for lunch with my friend Rob, also a local fan. Peppe was his usual friendly self, a very busy man who always has time to welcome customers and chat awhile and also guide us through the menu. I let Rob and Peppe decide on the tapas and simply enjoyed the food and the company. I'm already looking forward to my return.

Highly recommend the specials' menu particularly. The food was absolutely delicious. The gentleman in charge conducts almost all table service and is managing the rest of the staff, so don't expect to be pandered to too much, but all the same everyone is very friendly and even on a busy EOTHO night the food arrived quickly. Highly recommend!

Friendly proprietor, good variety of Tapas and some main dishes. My favourite is pork cheeks in a special sauce. There are also plenty of vegetarian dishes, all dishes are cooked to order so if you try on Friday or Saturday you may have to wait but the food is well worth it. I also often choose more than I can eat because it is all so tempting. Prices are surprisingly low for what you get

Recently visited this restaurant, it was vey busy and there was only one waiter who was running around very busy. The service was fairly poor, no smile and everything felt like a burden but not awful and to be fair he was very busy. That said the restaurant had a nice ambiance, was well decorated and I liked the lighting. The food was worse, the croquettes had a weird aftertaste, the scollaps, prawns and lobster came with a weird puréed mash and were really quite grim, no flavour and an odd texture. The pork fillets and lamb cutlets were ok. The Padron peppers were fresh and hot and the best bit of the meal. Prices were reasonable but I would not return based on the quality of the food.

The restaurant and staff were excellent. The tapas just got better with every dish we received. The waiter was very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. I have been to a number of tapas restaurants and this for me was the best I’ve ever been to. I would recommend the meatballs and also the pork steak. Every dish was cooked and seasoned to Perfection!! I can’t speak highly enough of our experience. The staff should be proud of there efforts

Not a very warm reception on arrival, one might have said slightly surly. Pimientos al Padrón were good, freshly fried and sprinkled with salt. Pretty much everything else was from the freezer section of a wholesaler. The croquetas where still frozen in the middle. Calamares fritos, £10.95 for a small plate of ready coated frozen squid rings. The albóndigas were tough, the sauce not great, too sweet. I think the meatballs and sauce had only just met. The Pan con tomate was ok, the tomato was fridge cold so was a bit flavourless , a bit of decent olive oil on the side would have helped. All in all, it’s been a tough year for restaurants, Sadly this one felt like it’s given up trying

I visit London four or five times a year and always make a point of eating here repeatedly over the past twelve years. The food is outstanding, and the owner is always very welcoming and attentive to his customers, many of whom are regulars: local, not local, young, old, all ethnicities, all nationalities. Regardless of the day of the week I go, at least half of the customers are known to the owner. It’s the type of restaurant where people engage in conversation with their table mates and with those seated at tables nearby simply because of the atmosphere created by the owner.

Very nice Spanish restaurant in Putney. I have been there many times and love it. It's pretty cheap and with a wide variety of tapas, all very good and tasty. I also recommend eating the paella, made like the real Valencian one, drinking Sangria and trying their churros for dessert. Definitely worth a visit!
