Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It’s a nice old world pub with a lot of history and over the years have visited the establishment. The only quarrel is not looking after the beer on tap. Had a bad pint which was off. Test the beer every day. Rant over. Worth...a visit.More

We found this pub on the off chance when we found the restaurant at our hotel was closed. The pub was a traditional 16th century inn with original mahogany panelling and stained glass windows. The restaurant was on the first floor. The staff were amazing and...found us a table straight away although we had not booked. One of us had the fish and chips - a huge portion served with mushy peas and I had mushroom risotto - absolutely lovely. We shared a dessert and again really good and sizeable portion. The atmosphere was unique, low lighting, candles on the table etc. Downstairs the pub was busy and sold real ales You could also eat there but would probably have to book. The bill was given to you in a book which outlined the history of the building dating back to the 1640's. Can't wait too go back !!!More

A great little pub in the centre of London, hidden behind Holborn station. A real 'local' of yesteryear and one that gives you a true feeling of Victoriana. Relatively small lounge area which means lots of tables being booked in advance but the staff have...these well marked with the times needed giving anyone who knows they will be leaving before the stated time, can happily occupy them - nice idea. With a good range of 5 cask ales on tap and a wide range of spirits supporting the normal mass produced stuff, this is certainly a good pub to go to although the prices are a bit over the top with a pint of cask being over £6 - but I did say it was in the centre of London, didn't I.More

We stopped in to The Ship Tavern just before noon on Saturday for lunch. The upstairs dining room doesn't open until noon, so we waited a few minutes before heading upstairs. It was very much worth the wait. My wife had the Steak Sarni sandwich,...and I had the pot pie. It's rare that I cannot eat everything on my plate, but I could not finish the tasty mashed potatoes. The atmosphere is great! The place settings when arriving at the table included a sprig of lavender and some other small flower. When asking for the check, it is presented in an old book that has the history of The Ship Tavern taped to the flyleaf. It's probably not the cheapest pub lunch one could find, but I thought it was a good value for the food and experience. Getting to and from the pub is quite easy, it's a few dozen meters from the Holborn tube station.More

Last minute booking for Sunday roast. One of the best we have had since coming to the UK. Pork belly had perfect crackling, roast half chicken was just right, sirloin was perfect. Huge portions and done right. Sticky toffee pudding had a dark rum base...and is in the top two favorites we have eaten as well. Staff was perfect , the same as the meal.More

On our last day in London, we happily found ourselves eating lunch here. We were in the area visiting the John Soane museum and needed food. The restaurant has the look and feel of exactly what we hoped to enjoy but best of all the...food was some of the very best classic British food we had. The chicken pie was delicious and the fish and chips was the best we had after two disappointing meals at other restaurants.More

Quirky old and full of character upstairs in the Oak room. The menu is relatively small but between the six of us we had 5 different meals and they were all excellent. Well presented and very tasty. The only concern is when I asked for...the bill a waitress just brought over the card machine so I said can I see the bill first - once I got the bill we’d been charged £398 including a bottle of pino instead of a glass and an additional £40 for the more expensive Version of the red (we had the £29 a bottle not the £50 one.) so I had to go query it and get it corrected and glass of pino removed as compensation - spurious items changed so bill now just over £300 …. All I’d say is check your bill !!!More

Nestled down a side street behind Holborn tube is this lively studenty pub, certainly on a Saturday night. Nice, old wooden interior and good selection of beers on tap.

My wife and I went to the Ship Tavern based on a friend’s recommendation. It is located not far from the British Museum. We arrived on a rainy day with no reservations and we were warmly greeted. We went to the upstairs dining room (Oak...Room) which was elegantly simple and made us feel very comfortable. The room was filled with locals having long lunches. It’s a place to spend some time at and just relax and enjoy the place. We both had ciders from the tap and ordered our lunches. The menu is not a typical pub menu. You can have a high dining experience at this tavern. The menu had Beef Wellington which looked great. We both ordered the Pot Pie of the Day. I had a Beef Pie and my wife had a Chicken and Leek Pie. Along with sides of mashed potatoes and green beans. Both pies were large and filled with tender and tasty meat that they had a covered with puff pastry. We were so full that we just could not bring ourselves to order something sweet. We both really enjoyed our meal and dining experience at the Ship Tavern!More

Agreed - lots of business people in the area but I think "business casual" without a jacket would be fine.
