Came in here with some friends for a Sunday roast. The food was really good but the service was way below par. From the moment we walked in, the waitresses just didn't seem to want to be there. We ordered starters and nothing came out in order. I know the menu says dishes will be served when it's ready but we ordered two of the same starter dish and one came out towards the end of our mains !! despite asking for it twice. CONDIMENTS!! What's that about, the staff refuse to let you serve your own condiments. They have to do it for you, which i find incredibly odd. it also means that they're servicing your dollop of mustard too big or too small, resulting in an awkward moment for everyone involved. our waitress tried to take our plates away more than twice when we were still eating, despite being told not to. even paying the bill, split between friends ended up being an effort for everyone involved. Wont be back here for a while, which is a shame because the food was nice.

We booked an area here for a colleague's celebration and from the minute we walked in, a lady who I presume was the Manager, treated us with disdain. There was no welcome or warmth and we made to feel like we were an inconvenience. Food was delicious and beautifully presented, although comes in small portions. It's a shame the atmosphere and service tainted our visit as the venue holds promise. Perhaps the Manager was having a bad day...

We went there for a birthday... the “cakeage” fee was £15 (a bit steep I think...) we had to pay a fee for extra gravy £1 per extra. They ran out of apple sauce for your Sunday roast and the food was more style over substance. The waiter was very nice though. Probably wouldn’t go back again.

This Shoreditch pub is a hidden gem for those who enjoy quality food at reasonable prices in London. The upstairs restaurant offers an 8 course tasting menu which offers Michelin star food at affordable prices. Wines are also good at sensible prices. Service is attentive without being overbearing and courses are explained briefly and clearly.

We had the 5 course and the 8 course tasting menus, and shared the extra two plates. Everything was superb. So beautifully presented. At £69 for the 8 course menu, while not cheap, it is an absolute bargain for London. Some top restaurants are charging £150 plus. Great wines too. Loved the Portuguese white.

I had a fantastic meal here last night with colleagues (bubbled). The service was impeccable with our server describing each dish in exquisite detail. It makes a refreshing change to have someone serving who knows so much about the dishes. She was also particularly helpful with choosing the wine - a red Sancerre - which was light enough and extremely drinkable. We had a second bottle. For me my starter of Tunworth Salt Baked Beetroot was the best beetroot dish I've ever eaten My main course of Hake was cooked to perfection and the dessert souffle was off the scale. In these troubled times the Princess of Shoreditch is a beacon of beautiful food and drink which I recommend highly. Also I was early so enjoyed a glass of wine downstairs and loved the music playlist - great taste Mr Owner!

I celebrated my 75th birthday in the restaurant with my wife we chose the five course menu we could’ve had an 8 course. The food cooked by Ruth Hansom; Great British Menu award winner; was exquisite and the service exceptional with the restaurant manager Sam taking us through every dish in detail as it arrived and also recommending wine to go with the food. Fantastic evening capped by a birthday cake cooked by Ruth Great evening and I can’t wait to go back and try another tasting menu might go for the eight course next time.

Great Sunday Roast at Princess of Shoreditch. In London on an extended on a work visit and looking for something relatively quiet, with good food and walkable to our location(Barbican). Princess of Shoreditch more than delivered! We had the Brown Butter & Thyme roast chicken and the Cornish Cod. Chicken was full of flavor and very moist, great presentation. The Cod was great, presented almost like a filet mignon (nicely done!), tasted wonderful! The service was very friendly and accommodating with great suggestions on wine. Lots of couples and families but it wasn't loud or crazy. Great place to carry on a conversation and have a great meal with a bottle of wine!

Visited for lunch and my god the food was stunning. So beautifully presented and it tasted fantastic!! The dishes were so different to the normal boring pub food, that you often see on a menu. The portion sizes were spot on and I can honestly say there wasn’t a thing I didn’t love. The pub itself is really nicely done out and stylish and clean. The staff were all really friendly and welcoming. We went mid week and the dinning room was nicely busy which meant a nice atmosphere. Given that they are having to deal with all the Covid restrictions there is still a good vibe, which is only a good sign. Everything was spaced out and clean, sanitizer available and masks worn where needed, felt safe eating there :)

When we arrived we were asked twice if we wanted drinks even though we had already ordered the first time we asked. Not a big deal - the water eventually came. After about 10 mins we were asked if we were ready to put our food orders in however we had to point out that a food menu hadn’t been delivered. We eventually ordered food and wine. The wine arrived and initially the bottle that was brought had been opened (that was noticed by the server before pouring) so another one was sourced. This one unfortunately was warm so we were offered extra ice in the ice bucket to chill it. We had to ask for this ice three times before it materialised. We had the 8 course tasting menu. The first few courses were lovely however the service was lacking. Plates were cleared whilst we were still eating. Drinks were never topped up. In addition the explanation of the courses was confusing and unclear. Then the food started to be a bit lacklustre. There was a crab agnolotti course where the pasta was al dente to the point of seeming uncooked. The duck was nice as was the first desert but the second desert was inconsistent. I loved it but my guest thought that lavender was overpowering. After I finished mine, I wanted to finish his (as mine was so good) and as soon as I ate it I had an overwhelming taste of lavender from the meringue that he got. It was terrible which strange when we obviously were supposed to have the same desert. He hadn’t realised that mine had such a different flavour, otherwise we would have said something before trying to finish it to be polite. The final course of the yuzu donut was lovely - I wish this had been 3x the size!

I came here on a whim on my own after googling 'best roasts in London', what a lovely little place. As you would expect for somewhere so highly rated it was fully booked however I got a spot at the bar. I couldn't decide between the pork and beef so asked the barman for his recommendation and went with that - beef. It was beautifully presented with only the beef and yorkshire pudding on the plate and the potatoes and vegetables came separately in little pots. It was a nice mixture of peas, green beans, carrots and cabbage. It stated on the menu you could ask for more sides free of charge and I asked for extra peas. The service was very good and it wasn't overly expensive for the area and quality. The background music was great too. I will definitely return on a week night once I am back in the office.

On arriving at the pub we were taken to our table . The menu didn’t really inspire me but it was something my sons had booked for their dads birthday. I ordered olives and bread to start , was only one type of bread and it was quite dry and dense . There was a couple next to us who ordered the bread and got a variety of breads 🤷‍♀️After engaging in conversation with the very nice couple they asked ‘I bet you’re wondering why we have this bread ‘ ? I said yes to which he told me they were the owners !!! The main course arrived before clearing our starter, and I don’t mind small portions but you could have fitted this cod on a credit card . That was £28 and then had to pay for side dishes . The desserts were ok but overall very disappointed in an evening we were looking forward to . I may be wrong but I think it was an impromptu visit from the owners and they left quiet quickly leaving drinks and food . I will not be returning or recommending.

So its really interesting how customers seem to forget the actual conversations with staff and owners ! I will now write the truth about the interaction as you seem to have forgotten the actual interaction which is odd as it was so recent My wife and i sat down next to you and as soon as our bread arrived you kept staring at our table and the bread which i thought was slightly odd, so i looked over to you and said “ i bet you wish you ordered the bread “ you replied “ “yeah i do “ i then offered you the bread at which point you declined . You then proceeded to ask if we were regular customers and i explained we were the owners and it was our first trip to the pub for some time . I asked you what made you come to the pub and your husband said that he would meet you after work and have dinner in London ( nothing about a birthday dinner ) Also he had seen Ruth cook the hake en croute on TV and made the booking but was disappointed that it wasn’t on the menu. Your husband did order the Cod and when i asked him how it was he said very good and no mention of how small it was as per your credit card comment ! The manager then came to the table and we all discussed the hake not being on the menu and the manager clearly said to you in front of me that if you wanted to return at another point Ruth would make the dish with some notice for you especially, which is what we do to look after our guests . The saddest point of all of this is that you had told us that you work at Jo Malone in Royal exchange and we were due to deliver the Hake en croute to your workplace so that you could cook it at home back in Essex as we wanted you to experience the Hake but obviously i have cancelled this as i don’t want our chefs to waste their time ! Finally you had also asked how business was after Covid and i explained that the recovery at The Princess was difficult for us but we have pulled through and you empathised with us but you then choose to try and damage us on a public forum and complain when you had ample opportunity to tell me personally at the table or the manager after we departed but you chose to vent and misconstrue the actual dinner due to your annoyance at the price and having to pay for side orders Barry

Very lovely pub we went to on a Saturday early evening, but we were disappointed by the rude service - when we asked the waitress for 5 more minutes to look at the (very limited and confusing) menu, she bluntly reminded us we had the table only until 8:30. My friend was vegan and there was practically nothing she could eat. She then asked just for a plate of chips, but the pub doesn't even service this! After that, for the rest of us, came our orders - the food was delicious but the portions were absolutely tiny! We were still hungry after our meals so crossed over to another restaurant for a 2nd meal. A disappointing experience - I remember this pub being much better a few years ago!

Pubs really need to ensure their staff enjoy working there. I feel a lot of times that people take a job in a pub, just because they think it is easy work. It isn't, and I speak from experience. Whatever troubles are bothering you when you are working in a pub, you really have to make sure you don't, well, kinda take it out on the customers, and ruin their day too. Yes, that means you have to be fake happy at times, and smile at people when you don't want, but that's the hospitality industry. I was in the area, and had some time to kill before meeting friends, and called in here for a few drinks. Asked for a sample of the cask beer, but was treated, with disdain that I had made the bartender (tall, trimmed beard, walking around like he owned the place), actually do some work, other than dump a pint in front of someone. No discussion around anything else, just a glare. Upon purchasing the card machine thrust in front of me, without even telling me how much the beer was. I mean, c'mon, it's not that hard to mumble something to a customer to tell them to pay for their beer! The service just wasn't up to scratch, maybe i'm being kind and blaming a bad day on what is their normal service, which was rude, dismissing, and he generally seemed to hate being there. The cask beer was well kept, and reasonably priced for the area, but that service leaves a bitter taste, even after the pint!

I loved my experience at the Princess of Shoreditch last night. The tasting menu we had was reach, balanced and each course a surprise (British corn, red mullet ceviche, the aged duck or the English strawberry? really I can’t decide what was my favourite) my compliments to the Chef! The atmosphere in the venue was great, all the members of staff were absolutely kind, friendly but also very professional. Specially, I am happy that we followed all Francesco’s suggestions in terms of wine pairing that amazingly complemented each course of the tasting menu (from the entrees to the dessert)….This guy knows what is talking about! I can’t wait to be back for another dinner!

Shoreditch
The western front of the edgy East End, Shoreditch is a perennially trendy haven for anything “street” – be it art, food, or fashion. With its handful of well connected transportation links dotting its perimeter, along with an ever increasing variety of shops, hotels, bars, and restaurants, it's easy to explore this trend-conscious and youth-oriented neighbourhood. There's a lingering post-industrial grit about Shoreditch, but because it shares a border with “The City” financial district, the influence from its upscale neighbour can result in fascinating outcomes.
