About
Terry’s is a traditional English cafe founded in the early 1980’s by Terry a former Smithfield meat trader. The cafe is situated on an enclave of shops just of Borough high street called Great Suffolk St parade. Terry’s in its original form was known as working men’s café - situated in Borough and neighbouring Bermondsey, Terry’s was a hub of the community serving hearty breakfasts to builders, scaffolders and the locals alike. Even in the formative years, the ethos at Terry’s was to provide good quality home cooked food at affordable prices. In modern times it proved challenging to keep prices this low and serve superiority food, in today’s market you are more like to spend 10 pounds plus for a decent sized fry up. On the flip side their ethos remains true to Terry’s vision, as they carefully select the best meats & veg available from both Smithfield & Borough markets twice per week assuring only the finest fresh produce is sourced before it reaches the diners plate.

Why have I never been here before!? It’s 5 minutes from work and I had no idea, went here for breakfast and had buck rarebit which is basically cheese on toast with fried eggs on top, it was delicious!! The place is really nicely decorated, the food is amazing with really good quality bread and eggs, loads of milk choices and great coffee. People were queueing outside which is a great sign, the food was great and the staff were really welcoming and gave great service. I will be back for sure!

I’ve always wanted to go to Terry’s on my many trips to my favourite city but I never got round to it until now.
It was probably not the best time to go having recently turned vegan but I saw that they offered a vegan breakfast so i had to give it a go.
On arriving I was welcomed and given a choice of table. The menu looks amazing however I had already made my choice so my order was taken quickly and I settled down with a fresh orange juice. It was pretty busy and it did take a little time for my food to arrive but that’s to be expected. If you want fast food then go to Maccers, the wait is totally worth it. In the meantime you can soak in the atmosphere of the cafe and listen to the amazing music. It really does take you back and it’s really good to see Austin the owner mingling in and chatting to all of the customers.
You might think that the vegan option wouldn’t be up to much but believe me isn’t was absolutely amazing. The vegan sausage was so good if it was added to a ‘normal’ breakfast then you would not know the difference. I’ve not had bubble for years so this was a real treat and the portions were very generous.
I rounded off my food with a lovely cup of Terry’s tea, with coconut milk of course and I was a,ready planning my next visit.
So next tine you’re in London and you want a traditional breakfast then do give this place a try, it’s only a short walk from Southwark tube statin and you will experience that famous London hospitality. Big respect to Austin and his lovely team!

Having researched great places for Breakfast in London I came across Terrys, by all accounts a bit of an institution!
Decided to head there for breakfast prior to heading to Twickenham for the Rugby!
What a find, this place is awesome. We had to wait 25-30 mins to get a table as its extremely popular but it was totally worth it! We brought coffees from next door whilst waiting.
The menu isn’t huge but big enough to please all. I opted for the ‘Blowout’ with a side of hash browns and it was sooooo good!! Perfect poached eggs, great bacon, amazing sausages and the hash browns blew my socks off :)
The decor is really fun too, surrounded by old photos and memorabilia all whilst playing old-time music.
Oh, and really friendly service.
I can’t recommend this place enough. I’ll definitely be back.

Having researched this venue before visiting, part of the appeal to visit was to be seated inside, which we failed to achieve and was instead seated on a table for two at the kerbside (luckily the weather permitted this). There is also outside seating under cover but, like the seating inside, this was busy upon our arrival just after 11am on a Saturday and the first seating which became available after 25mins was the kerbside seating, which was OK but obviously missed the goal of experiencing the decor and vibe from being inside. There is a Terry's Delicatessen adjoing Terry's Cafe and it made us wonder if this is an addition, or if some of the original space for Terry's Cafe has been given up to add this different aspect to the business? There is a queuing system which you can join using the QR code displayed and your smartphone, or by speaking with a member of the serving team at the entrance desk, who will add your name to the waiting list on a touchpad device. It is also important that as a customer you have a smartphone not needing wifi (i.e. has data available) to view the menu using a QR code at the table, as hard copy menus are not provided. The Breakfast Tea was disappointing; expected this to be via a teapot but was just a tea bag in a cup with hot water and milk already added but my friend said his Americano Coffee was good, although he had to wait for this over 5mins after I received my tea. We both ordered identical breakfasts (The Borough Special). The wait for these to be served to our table was about a further 15mins after my friend received his coffee. The quality of the breakfast was good, particularly the sausage and bacon, but bizarrely mine was missing the mushrooms, which I didn't realise immediately and as there wasn't a server in sight when I did realise, plus we already had used up so much time here, I just let that omission on the kitchen's part slide. The toast ordered with my friend's breakfast was made from an uncut loaf with a herb of some sort featured and served with small packs of butter, which helped justify the extra £1.00 charge for the toast; drinks and toast are not included in the breakfast price. At £34.65 total, including the 10% service charge added to each bill which it is for the customer to spot and ask to have removed if you do not wish to pay this, it is the most expensive of the Breakfast Cafes we have tried in London and whilst OK, it doesn't have the appeal of making us wish to revisit, unlike a certain counterpart in Bethnal Green and Pimlico which seem to have, unlike Terry's, kept better connected to their origins.

Hi,
Im not going to respond to the majority to your extensive comments however to suggest we are not better connected our origins is offensive . The world has changed and the business has evolved with the times. Its a shame that you did not connect with us on a " spiritual" lever ......such is life.
Any way we do hope you try us again , perhaps not at the weekend when we have to implement the queuing systems etc.
Take care and we wish you well for now and the future ✌️

Was greeted by a sign saying wait here to be seated but was just waved in by the waitress sitting eaten her beeakfast. I had the bog breakfast but when i added toast and a coffee it came to around £18 odd as they added on 10% service charge. Bit crafty that was. No sign of the owner as per all the photos online. Must be just for publicity days only. Too expensive for what it was

Hello David,
I'm sorry you feel underwhelmed by your experience and also feel we are over priced.
I'm guessing you had the works breakfast £12.50 - 2 toast - £1 and a Monmouth coffee £3 with an optional 10% service that you had the choice to be removed .Not crafty at all , it states it on the receipt .
For the record i work shifts regularly however not at the business every minute of the day, i'll be passing on your comments to the team as it infuriates me when they do not see customers waiting to be seated and prioritise there own breakfast over customer service.
I will say though it's also quite infuriating when people pop into central London for a day and complain about London prices .....i notice 41% of your reviews are excellent 12% are average and 35% are terrible , which puts us in the 12%.
I would get of that high horse if i was you and lighten up a little , the truth very few people actually take any notice of your opinion or read the majority of your reviews.
I bid you farewell .

Myself and partner visited London for a few days last week and this was by far our favourite meal/venue that we ate in.
Service was fantastic, big shout out to the two ladies working front of house on Wed 25th Aug.
Food was delicious - we had scrambled eggs and salmon on toast, and the Standard Breakfast (sausage was just delicious). Well done chefs!
The character and atmosphere of the venue was something else - we loved every second of it.
Definitely recommending this to friends and will be returning when we come back in a few months time. Thank you! :)

I visited Terry's for the first time in October, after dragging up from Bermondsey Market, and via searching out my grandfather's old place, nearby - last seen in 1968. It was some time after 2pm, and I wavered somewhat hesitantly outside until Austin (Terry's grandson) invited me inside with a friendly "table for one, sir?" I ordered The Standard breakfast, and it was very enjoyable indeed. So many breakfast type cafes serve 'serviceable' type bacon, that often turns out to be a bit greasy and even 'fishy' in flavour. Terry's bacon is a revelation! Three thick rashers, well cooked, not greasy, and even still with a rind on. You don't see that so often, these days.
Service was prompt and friendly, and I felt well fed and looked after. As I was finishing my tea, Austin was putting his cap on before taking off on his bike, and he asked how i was doing just as I was leaving. I gave him a double thumbs up, as my mouth was still full, so perhaps he remembers that!
Thank you, Austin, and all your staff, for such a nice experience. I feel a connection with Southwark, given that I have family connections with the area, and eating at Terry's helped me to rediscover that in a calm and enjoyable way. It's also a personal coincidence that Austin's father was a cook in the army, and learned butchering skills - just as was the case with my own dad, so I, too, know good bacon when I see it (rarely, these days)!
I was visiting from Massachusetts, but I will be back as soon as I can, and next time I'm going to save more room for 'The Works'!!

I really enjoy my fry ups and it's a race against time to try all these places especially the ones that have been here longer than me.
Terry's Cafe was one I had to visit because you can feel the charm already on their social media.
When I got there, I was impressed already as well as the location because it was comforting seeing other aged shops nearby.
The chippy opposite will also take you back in time so I will be visiting sometime because I just enjoy being in a time warp for fish and chips as well.
Terry's Cafe is so worth visiting, every moment is entertaining and there is something to be discovered in every nook and cranny.
Moving on to the menu, they have the fryups, award winning toasts and the on toasts.
I decided to have the Buck rarebit as not many other places serve it.
When it came, there were two perfectly fried eggs with runny yolks on top of the cheese toast.
You could see the grated cheese flawlessly melted just right.
Knowing that I couldn't finish it all, I still had an extra bubble just for the records and the bubble here is the biggest piece I have been served in a square patty form!
The buck rarebit was really delicious although I would have wanted a stronger cheese that was sharper but it went deliciously well with the egg.
Towards the end I added some Worcester sauce which was comforting.
Overall, it was such a good breakfast and I am definitely revisiting for Terry's tea bags as one of the reviews on TA has mentioned it.
The owner Austin is really nice and has a lovely charisma.

I said I would be back and I was true to my word. This time I arranged to meet two friends who I hadn’t seen in a long time so they can experience Terry’s
Once again the service was excellent and the vegan breakfasts that my friend and I opted for were amazing! I still can’t get over how they can get a vegan sausage to taste so good! And the bubble is something that you simply have to try, it takes me back to my younger days when we would have bubble on a Sunday evening! My other friend opted for the smoked salmon and he was very impressed. Good praise from someone who owns their own restaurants so well worth giving that a try.
We even had a nice chat and a laugh with Austin and I was very impressed that the girl who served me remembered me from my last visit, considering the number of people who must visit. Austin even gave me some Terry’s tea bags to take home with me so I can try to recreate the experience.
So if you haven’t been already then why not? It is a full experience where you not only get traditional food but you also get a traditional welcome. Like me you will be planning your next visit as soon as you finish your food

We visited the cafe at lunchtime on a Saturday and enjoyed a Veggie and Blow Out breakfasts, both of which were excellent. The eggs were really nice and the veggie sausage was nice and herby.
Friendly staff who were cleaning the tables in this time of Covid.
Looking forward to trying the lunch menu next time.

I've known and used Terry's Cafe for years but haven't been there for a while but i was glad to see that standards haven't slipped. The full veggie breakfast was excellent and the veggie cumberland sausage and the bubble were both fine examples. The tea was strong and the toast came thick and crusty served with proper butter.
Terry himself is a very friendly and jovial bloke and we sat and talked about his takeover of the legendary Maria's in Borough Market,

Popped in for a Breakfast after a late night. I got there around 08:45 on a Sunday morning which was lucky as it got really busy after I arrived and a queue formed. I have to say it was excellent. The ingredients are top quality which is good to see. I had the "blowout". I thought it was good value for £12.50 considering the quality of the ingredients and the size of the portion which was more than adequate. Service and surroundings were good.

Felt compelled to write a review. After a concert on Saturday night we woke up on Sunday and fancied a full English, we chose this place relatively by random from google but did see it had excellent reviews. I can honestly say it hugely exceeded our expectations! On top of the amazing locally sourced food and generous amounts of it, you feel as though you’re having an authentic London experience in a rustic London cafe. I will be recommending to all!

Quality food and generous portions. However, just down the road, there was a fry up for £5 while we paid 12. To add insult to injury, it was very bizarre when the server fisted my water, particularly given the global pandemic. Overall 8734/10096

Speedy, phenomenal breakfast which tasted gorgeous. Will definitely be returning. We did not sample the fry-ups so cannot vouch but the other customers' breakfasts looked monstrous and well worth the price. The staff were funny, friendly and welcoming. We had the Breakfast Sarnie which was affordably priced at £6.50 and a side of hash browns and some mushrooms which were absolutely fabulous. Quality and locally sourced meat, would definitely recommend to all in the area!
