We shared the beef wellington roast. This was gorgeous, so was the gravy we couldn’t fault it. However the sides of vegetables, cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes were very disappointing and so was the presentation.

Our first visit to this restaurant proves to be an excellent choice for a farewell dinner for some Italian friends who were visiting.. For snacks we shared the mushroom marmite eclairs ( a delightful mouthful), fried Brussels sprouts with coconut yoghurt (like even by sprout...detesting me) and some oysters,. I really enjoyed my Jerusalem artichoke starter and monkfish main. The roast potato side was fantastic. We had no room for desert. I had looked at the menu online and my hear was set on the langoustine/scallop/chicken starter but they had sold out at lunchtime. I will be back soon at lunchtime while it’s still on the menu. The bar looked nice too - a super spot for a glass and some oysters in Soho. Service was polished. There was a rowdy bunch on the table left over from lunch next to us (we found it quite amusing] and the serving staff managed the situation very professionally. Highly recommend.More
Hello Gemstone Thanks so much your kind words - we're really touched and honoured to be a part of the farewell, and perhaps even the Italians might miss our British cooking! Hope to see you soon Rachael
We booked on a whim and found an absolutely delightful little sanctuary. nice atmos, small restaurant, lovely staff, DELICIOUS food. Good price. what a winner! thank you!
What an ideal evening -- this is exactly what you hope for on a date night in London. The room was lovely, comfortable and candle lit. The service was great -- helpful and not intrusive, and I'd happily eat there many nights a week. Top...quality ingredients and execution, produce that California would be proud to feature in a farmer's market. Beef Wellington was a showstopper. Thank you so much for rounding out our London adventure with style.More
Second time in a month and it just gets better. The lovely Alex N made sure we had a great time. Marmite eclair still great, but this time round I got to try the tempura romanesca (broccoli), the chorizo, the oyster, the croquettes and the...cured trout and they were all wonderful. However, the crown goes to the glorious Beef Wellington - perfectly cooked and the roast potatoes crispy and the carrots sweet! Pudding wise - the stick date pudding was not too sweet and my favourite of all their desserts. Will need to find an excuse to come back here again soon!More
I had a terrific all round experience at Sussex, food was absolutely fantastic. The menu is made for sharing, with snack & tapas style starter plates, followed up by larger ones. I visited as a solo diner & the menu also worked well for one,...as I enjoyed a succession of smaller dishes. The menu is concise & seasonal, with much of the produce supplied by the family farm in West Sussex. Stand out dishes included the chorizo with hung yoghurt & kale, mushroom marmite eclair & truffled potatoes. The wine list is pretty expansive in comparison to the fairly short food menu & is well thought through & keenly priced. Service was really good, thanks to a tight team of well informed & invested people. Highly recommended.More
We had a load of starters and 1 main. Fresh, tasty food… Goats cheese salad, smoked trout, tempura broccoli, cod cheeks, sea bass .... all really good. Dessert a little disappointing (white choc plum tart… def needed some ice cream with it) but not terrible....The setting is lovely and we had a friendly and helpful waiter. Will return and would recommend.More
Great atmosphere and delicious food. The staff were a bit stretched but nothing was too much trouble. It was our first visit to the restaurant and would definitely return.
We headed to Sussex and were filled with excitement upon perusing the menu. It took a while to place our orders as we quickly realized they were understaffed. The head waiter was genuinely apologetic about the wait, and so we ordered two entrees and the...Beef Wellington for 2, and the lamb. He promptly returned to inform us that the Beef Wellington had run out. We exclaimed, "At 8 pm?! On a Saturday?" Once again, he apologized. We made a new selection. Despite our disappointment, we were determined to make the most of the evening. The waiter came back, having evidently negotiated with the chefs to make things right, and the Beef Wellington was back on the menu. We requested a bottle of Rose wine, which also took an extensive amount of time to reach us. More apologies followed as the wine arrived at a warm temperature. He presented us with half a carafe of another chilled Rose', which was somewhat cold. The bread finally arrived, and we quickly devoured it due to our growing hunger. After an hour and three quarters in the restaurant, the Beef Wellington was finally served. While it was acceptable, at a price of £83, it should have been truly spectacular. The lamb was similarly decent, but it failed to ignite any excitement. Roasted lamb is challenging to mess up. Once more, the waiter apologized for the long wait(s), even mentioning that the service charge would be removed. A gesture that elicited a rather subdued "Whoopee." On the whole, the stress of observing the staff scurrying around in a state of chaos and continuously apologizing to all patrons became exceedingly annoying. To top it off, the bill amounted to £250. Thankfully, we possessed a discount voucher; otherwise, I might have caused a scene. More apologies were extended as we exited. What a regrettable waste of money! If a shortage of staff is the issue, it would be wise to engage additional personnel through an agency. Alternatively, be transparent with customers and acknowledge, "You're in for a tumultuous evening." Maintain professionalism and refrain from attempting to extract more money from customers when the quality of service is quite appalling!More
I had a wonderful dinner at Sussex Restaurant. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy. I highly recommend the lamb rump and the chocolate eclairs. I will definitely come back again.
Good, but not amazing or outstanding. The vichyssoise was very tasty, but the "crouton" was a couple of lumps of what looked to have been very good bread which had been dried out so much they were virtually inedible. Steak was also good (and cooked...well, nice and rare) with very good rosemary roast potatoes (which were extra). We shared a Capri-torte style desert which was also good. Service was friendly and helpful, but glacially slow - perhaps partly because all the food has to be carried up from the basement kitchen? It was a bit crowded (and hence noisy) for my preference, but lively. The place was OK. If I was invited again, I'd be very to eat there, but I'm not sure I'd choose it...More
We had the lovely tasting menu, thank you! Ivy was great and we had such a wonderful evening - coming back soon.
We had the best night at this restaurant. The selection of food was amazing and we struggled to pick what to have. Rachel and Alex who served us were friendly, attentive and great service. The restaurant is cosy and stylish and would love to go...back.More
OMG - everything was beyond delicious. Thank you Sussex for a lovely meal full of yum at every bite. Not sure what else to say lol
Thanks so much for the response GlobeTrotter - so glad you loved everything!
Innovative and delicious, beautifully presented. Have not actually eaten anything that didn’t appear to have been well thought through. Tried the cocktails which were equally lovely, the Manager was a joy and made us feel very welcome despite our weird lunch arrangement of all the...starters and cocktails! Have been a couple of times and has never failed to impressMore
So glad you loved it all - those starters and cocktails are an ace way to lunch!
