About
The historic birthplace of London’s coffee scene, The Jamaica Wine House is now home to one of the Square Mile’s finest pubs and wine bars. Hidden away in St Michael’s Alley, amid a labyrinth of charming medieval courts and backstreets near Monument, a warm welcome awaits those who seek out The Jamaica Wine House – affectionately known by locals as the Jampot. London’s first ever coffee house opened here in 1652, counting Samuel Pepys amongst its earliest patrons. Now, city workers and tourists make space in their diaries to visit for entirely different reasons - with fine ales, wines and superb dining making it one of the City’s top pubs and bars. Offering guests the best of both worlds, the place is split in two to cater for all tastes. At ground level you’ll find a traditional London pub, with wood-panelled bar, high ceilings and a super selection of Kentish cask ales and international lagers.

An old coffee house with a period exterior and dark wood interior that has a wine house name. But it is now a proper pub and bar with all the drinks you expect and real ale too. Food available in the ambience of a dark wood interior plus a basement bar and seating too. In the summer people stand in the nearby alleyway but it is pretty cool to be inside and can be quiet downstairs. Good staff and well kept ale. Tasty pub style menu. Lovely vibe. A must if you are in the city.

Well, I've been drinking here for years (probably as long as it's been open!). Great place for a quiet pint. Can randomly get really busy on Thursdays and Fridays. Staff and management fantastic. Can never do enough. Polite and respectful. Aware of what traditional drinkers in The City (like me) expect from the service and always look after you. Downstairs is for food really, so if I'm just having a pint my friends and I tend to stay upstairs.

Was being taken on a tour of the old London financial district and stopped into the Jamaica Wine House to rehydrate. Kentish Ales and Premium British Ales are very hard to find on tap anywhere, Jamaica Wine House has them in spades. Get in and taste old England.

Regularly come to the Jampot once a month for after work drinks with a few friends, service has normally been great but on this occasion we ended up experiencing something none of us could quite fathom, the tall blonde woman serving behind the bar directly swore at us saying “f*****g hurry up and choose something”. We opted not to challenge her on the matter at the time as she clearly didn’t want to be there and maybe there is something going on at home. We won’t let this ruin our monthly tradition but I do believe it needs addressing.

I’ve frequented “The Jam Pot” for almost 30 years but after last night I’ll never go there again. I was with a mixed group of colleagues in a team night out. We’d finished a meal and I’d suggested visiting here as it is a unique historical bar and I’ve had many great lunch times and evenings here. We arrived just before last orders and the bar staff were fine in serving us. Then as we were drinking up two security guards came over and in a threatening manner told we had two minutes to leave. We were then being shouted at by them in our faces in an intimidating way. Completely unnecessary. The whole point of security is to make people feel safe, they certainly didn’t do that. A shame as this was always a friendly and welcoming place in the past.

Have eaten here before and found it reasonably good. On this occasion, the restaurant was empty. Two of us sat at a table with bar stools and were promptly asked to move to a smaller table. As the table wasn't as nice, asked if we could remain where we were, considering restaurant was empty. Would have fully understood if it was busy. Manager decided to get involved and refused, saying larger tables were needed. No attempt at customer service or politeness. We only stayed as we already had drinks. Needless to say, restaurant remained virtually empty for the duration of our stay. Emailed subsequently to give them an opportunity to explain, at which they said they would look into it and respond in 2 working days. No response over a week later. Will not visit again. Shame, as it should be a nice place.

Unfortunately our large business trip was spoilt after the blonde lady working behind the bar on the 8th of June around 1:30pm stopped a young man serving us mid way pouring our drinks to rudely point out we look ‘ about 15 mate’ & continue to comment on our appearances. In addition to this, after proving ages and having a drink poured her voice raised as she demanded us to pay (we were stood still). We understand the procedure however it was handled really badly. we won’t be returning!

Hello and thank you for the review. Sorry to hear that you didnt enjoy your time with us. I looked into this incident and the matter has been dealt with. Unfortunately the member of staff who was originally serving you was being trained, the other member of staff has also been spoken too, and re-trained on the correct way to deal with ID a customer. If you would like to pass on your details, i'm happy to discuss this further with you and invite you back in. We are best contacted on our email address, Jamaicawinehouse@shepherd-neame.co.uk. Popped in here yesterday mid afternoon in between meetings. Great old fashion pub with friendly staff. Little bit off the beaten track but sign posted off main road so easy to find. Has a secret location feel to it. Worth the effort to visit.

Danny made our evening in Todd’s bar downstairs - great friendly service, went above and beyond to create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and kept the drinks flowing while also accommodating a large demanding group who insisted on taking up most of the bar area. Great job.

Tall blonde Eastern Europe woman behind bar is very rude. Raised her voice at me and my friends for asking simple question about one of the product. She then basically threw the atm machine on the bar at us and continued to stare rudely at me and my friend as we left the bar.

Wonderful historic premises in the heart of The City. One of the original coffee houses some time ago ! Now the Jampot has a good selection of wines and beers and is a favoured spot for many. Efficient and friendly service.

The Jampot is as good as ever. A wide selection of beers and plenty of alcoves with coat hooks for a group to meet.

Fantastic history and good service once you have settled down. Prices not too bad for London and there was a great atmosphere. It's called the Jamaica WINE House but the beer is worth a try as well.

City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.
