Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Located down a side street and underground, you probably won't stumble upon the Merchant House bar but it's definitely worth going out of your way for. Decor is classic with leather panelling and banquettes. The cocktails were delicious - we were on negronis and the...staff were very knowledgeable. No nibbles are served with the drinks but there is a bar snack menu. Only gripe is that there is no menu... idea is that you tell the waiter what you're in the mood for and the skilled bartender can create a personalised cocktail or you just order a classic (like we did). Issue with this is that without knowing the price you're slightly hesitant to order more drinks as you don't know what the bill will end up being and having a menu can be helpful as inspiration in deciding what to drink - I'd highly advise having a menu and this is probably what will stop me from coming back. For 2x negronis it was £33 which is quite expensive given they were rather small. Nevertheless it was a fun experience and location, decor and atmosphere were great.More

Genuinely probably one of the worst experiences I have ever endured- zero customer service, what is the point. We were left alone for 60% of the time which meant we were without drink for at least 30 mins of the hour session. After being left...alone we 'dared' to reach over the bar to refill our wine glasses only to be scalded by the staff explaining we were "not allowed to make our own drinks" (which is what our voucher actually permitted). We were made to feel like naughty children at school after being neglected for over half of hour allotted time. Then 1 second past our hour session we were asked to leave (with drinks still in our glasses). Truly could not recommend any less.More

Been here before but although the drinks are still great and the atmosphere fabulous, the format is now not so good - there is no menu of cocktails and no prices - so its a bit hit and miss and a blank cheque re prices.

There are so many drinks available there’s no menu just ask for what you want. We had an amazing bartender give...us a gin tasting experience which was insightful and a wonderful way to spend an evening. Will definitely go back. On reading the recent reviews we didn’t go expecting too much, but I was very pleasantly surprised. We were shown to “ The Brig” and Murray got under way on asking what Cocktails we liked & started making His spin on our favourite cocktails, we...enjoyed Our first cocktail then he got us Connected to the Bluetooth speaker where we played our own music. The cocktails kept coming & we enjoyed fruity, creamy & coffee based cocktails. Murray asked us were we happy with the temperature & lighting of the Brig (which we were ) . Overall we had a great experience we couldn’t fault our host or the cocktails we were served it’s just a shame it was only a hour long as the time flew by. Would highly recommend.More

Cocktails were great and the bartender was professional. However the expectation of ‘enjoying music of your own choice, living it up with bespoke cocktails and basking in an interrupted atmosphere’ was sadly not achieved. Upon arrival the bar was very cold and not warmed up...prior to our arrival and we were informed we could turn the heater on if we wanted to! When we enquired about the music we were told to turn on our Bluetooth and play our own music! This was not expected for the cost of the experience. Furthermore the Wi-Fi was not working properly, nor was there a network signal for either of our providers hence we could not actually play any music! This interfered with the experience for the majority of the hour, whilst I was attempting to rectify the issue but to no avail in an awkward silence. When subsequently challenged the manager responded ‘the Wi-Fi worked just fine for the rest of our guests’. However the bartender informed us at the time that this was a common problem with guests which needed to be rectified! Upon the issue of the cold temperature the response from the manager was ‘the bar is separated from the alleyway by a single door which of course affects the temperature on colder days’… surely this is rectified by planning ahead for the customers and simply turning the heating on? … Entirely unhappy with the managers defensive response and inadequate apology. Neither of these issues should be the problem of the paying guests. The review title reflects the music issue, the temperature of the room, the mangers response and by no means the ability of the bartender.More

Booked a gin tasting experience for my best friends birthday. Never been before & was pleasantly surprised by a very cozy basement bar with really cool vibes. Monika the manager was very attentive & professional and led us to the private gin tasting room. We...were welcomed by Pedro, a lovely young man who was clearly very knowledgeable about gin, passionate about his role and a top barman. The hour passed quickly as Pedro took us through the journey of gin to the present day. I would really recommend it especially with Pedro as the gin specialist. He is a star⭐️ We will certainly return…More

We came for the brig experience. I can see some found this really good on previous reviews but personally we found the room a bit claustrophobic and too dark. It wasn’t helped by the fact I couldn’t pair my phone with the speaker on Bluetooth...so playing our own music was an immediate issue. The barman we got assigned seemed awkward and found it really hard to break the ice. For one moment I felt a little bit cringy as we really weren’t hitting it off, he was a little stand off ish to be honest. Didn’t ask us what we liked other than spirits so I had a very sour cocktail to start with, which I didn’t like and the barman seemed like he was taking offence. I was expecting it to be a bit more professional and for the barman to lead the way and maybe explore our tastes more. He seemed too young and inexperienced in our view. Conversation flowed eventually but felt like we had to put the work in. The bar downstairs seems really nice. I feel we would’ve been much better suited to having a few cocktails there instead of the forced interaction of this experience.More

What a fantastic experience we had on Saturday. Bought as a gift we didn’t know what to expect. This was an hour of bespoke cocktails made to our taste in the smallest little speakeasy in London. Rueben was our host and he made the experience...so great with his expert knowledge of mixology and friendly personality. He is an absolute asset to this place. Nothing was too much trouble and we were even able to take the last cocktail down to the beautiful downstairs bar (which houses the most bottles of spirits I have ever seen) with a beautiful ambience, candle lit with a jazzy laid back vibe. Just perfect, thank you. Will be recommending.More

Excellent evening last night at the bar with a colleague from Asia - myself a gin drinker, my colleague a whisky drinker. We came for a few drinks, ended up spending 5 hours at the bar. Every drink we’ve could think of was made to...order. The bartender, from Portugal, was a joy! What an experience. A true speakeasy experience, and while s bit discomforting that we had no idea what we were paying, in the end was reasonable for what we consumed. Fabulous night out. Thank you so much. Will be back soon! ( some hot food - even the very basics would be nice!😊)More

Arrived for a pre dinner birthday cocktail - lovely surroundings and looked very promising until we came to order. They do not have a cocktail menu but boast they can make anything. BUT - no espresso martini, no coconut liqueur, no galliano. So 3 out...of six drinks ordered 3 not available! They then came up with an excuse that they try to avoid products available at supermarkets. I asked for a rum and coke and they suggested rum and ginger beer - despite both ingredients being readily available at supermarkets!! Ruined the first part of the evening. Just do not get the concept at all - pathetic. There are many, many far better cocktail bars in London. But a lovely setting.........More
