Joe Allen restaurant garners appreciation for its prime location and the seamless move to a new venue, offering reasonable prices that many guests find appealing. The vibrant, lively atmosphere, with its authentic ambiance, lighting, and music, consistently delights diners. While opinions on service are mixed, with some experiencing attentiveness and others facing delays, the value proposition is a point of contention, with a number of patrons considering the pricing steep for the food and service quality. The culinary offerings elicit varied reactions, ranging from tasty and good quality to inconsistent and overpriced.

Went for lunch. Staff were very welcoming and the pre lunch coctail was excellent. Food and ambience were great and the waitress went out of her way to make sure we had an excellent time. Great value for the location as well. A really nice experience and will return.

This was my first time at Joe Allen and I was pleasantly surprised by the decor and atmosphere. Prices are quite high for the quality of food and wine, so I would only return again if I was in the area and looking for pre-theatre dinner. Price wise I would only order from the set menu as prices on the a la carte menu are too high for the quality provided.

Having been on several occasions in the past, Joe's was always a special place. However, this time it seemed to have lost its sparkle. The menu is smaller than ever and when I asked what was on the burger menu, I was met with a dismissive grunt from the waiter. This used to be a fun thing in Joe's and the burgers used to be varied and excellent. The burger I had could have come from any mass producing burger joint. My partner had the ribs which were good although smothered in too much sauce. The cocktail we had at the start was nice but, with a couple of beers, the cost of the meal exceeded £100 and was simply not worth the cost. Such a shame but we won't be going back - there are simply too many better places to eat in London.

After looking up for somewhere too eat before going to London Joe Allen kept coming up in my searches and also when we checked into our hotel it was joined to the hotel so that gave us the heads up to give it a try. So booked a table and what a disappointment my sirloin steak was cooked to my liking as asked for but very small and tough it came with a watercress and shallot salad, well the salad was so small you thought it was just a garnish. My friends meal was ribs they were ok wouldn’t order them again it came with a Chinese slaw and that was just a tiny bit of chopped white cabbage with a hint of chillie flavour.

Tucked away in this narrow street which runs from the Strand up to Covent Garden, not helped by the scaffolding for repairs on the adjacent building, the relatively small street facade hides a large restaurant which goes deep inside and has a fascinating decor full of iconic posters from theatres in London and New York. We went for a pre-theatre meal. At 5.15pm, the restaurant was relatively quiet; by 6pm, it was fairly busy. For starters we had the ham hock and toast, followed by the steak and frites, with different sauces, which together were filling enough that we had no room for dessert. Enjoyable, along with friendly and efficient service, finished in plenty of time for the theatre performance.

We took 2 of our grandchildren (15 & 12) to dinner here before going to the theatre and we had a great meal. The restaurant was packed even though it was 5 pm. The tables are quite close together and the walls are full of theatre posters and memorbillia. We were eating in the first dining area which hasd a full bar at the back. WE ordered a bottle of wine from their quite extensive list ( they do also have a large cocktail list as well as serving beers and spirits). We started with a selection of starters, the croquettes, bread, roquefort dip with the soft pretzel which were very good an denjoyed y all. For our main course 2 of us chose the chicken milanese, a good sized portion which was perfectly cooked and we ordered 2 portion of french fries to go with it. Our grandson had the Rib Eye steak ordered and served rare which came with french fries. The steak was a bit on the small size for the cost !!!!. Whilst finally my wife chose the chicken caesar salad. All the main course were very good. The service was OK though a couple of times it was difficult to get the attention of the servers when we wanted to order more drinks for the children. Overall we had a great meal and the granchildren loved it

First visit and it was a pre theatre. Wife and daughter ate off the set menu (small Caesar Salad starter that's not so small) whilst I ate off the a la carte. Great roast pumpkin soup to start followed by great ribs (very sticky marinade) and an apple/berry crumble with enough for two. A great mojito and Sam Adam's for me as well with wine and cocktail as well at around £30 per head. Never rushed but very efficient service. Recommended.

This is my 3rd visit to this restaurant I found the menu a bit disappointing for a American restaurant there was no Burgers or pasta I had the pre theatre set menu which was extremely small portions. The staff are overly attentive taking things away as soon as there empty we felt like we were being watched. If you just want a steak this would be a good choice

Thank you for your valuable feedback. We do have an extensive list of burgers but they are not advertised on the menu. This is because Joe Allen himself refused to let us put them on the menu as back in 1977 he didn’t want to be known as a burger bar. Our customer base embraced the secret burger menu and have never allowed them to be on the menu. I will ensure we follow up on all service issues including letting all our wonderful customers about our off menu items . We would love to see you again and are very sorry to have disappointed you.

Having attended Joe Allen’s for a number of years now, they have always been great at catering for my lactose intolerance. Between my last visits I have ‘gone vegan’, whilst I understand there need to be items on the menu covering lots of allergies and intolerances, I didn’t feel vegan was that obscure? I enjoyed a starter and the main course was fine, although sparse. When I asked if there were any vegan dessert options the waiter replied no and walked away. It really soured my views on a place I really like. Hopefully they can expand their menu to provide a vegan dessert.

Thank you so much for your review. We are sorry to hear that you felt your options were limited and would like you to know that we are looking to expand our range of plant based dishes at present to include a dessert. On your visit you could have chosen from a selection of sorbets and we would like to apologise that these were not offered by your waiter. Your comments are greatly appreciated and we hope that you will consider visiting us again.....

Went to joes last night . We stayed in the hotel next door so was easy for us and when we peeked in the night before it looked busy and buzzing so we booked .on arrival was met by a bubbly lady and shown to our table . The table was at the end of the row by the steps and the way to the toilets , people were constantly streaming past our table and bottoms were constantly edging into our tiny spot . The table was rickety and definitely in need of the good old beer Mat under the wobbly legs . The bubbly lady bought over the very limited menu and I asked for some tap water and it was bought over immediately . Our waiter came and I chose the pork which they I Did not have any left , 4.45 on a Saturday ??? So he left us to re choose for a good 20 mins , I chose steak which was lovely but 37.50 for a piece of steak , 5 chips and a water cress leaf is not worth it . Basically a 50 minute evening out cost 114.00 for mediocre , run of the mill food and not good service . Won’t bother again , stick with the Ivy . Same price and extremely better food and staff

We met as a group of friends who have previously enjoyed our evenings at the original Joe Allen in Exeter Street and 2 or 3 times at the newer venue (but prior to lockdown). We were looking forward to it as we had such good memories of previous visits but sadly it did not really live up to expectations. It started well with a very warm and friendly welcome and we sat in the bar area with a bottle of wine while we waited for our table to be prepared. Once we were shown to our table our experience started to deteriorate. It was not at all busy but we waited a long time for someone to take our drinks orders and then a long time before they returned to take our meal orders. We all thoroughly enjoyed our starters and we had all chosen either smoked salmon (a very generous portion) or garlic mushrooms (a selection of various mushrooms on toast). The main meals were, however, disappointing. 3 of us had ribs. A change from the previous rack of ribs these were now served individually cut. Obviously ribs are always sticky but no finger bowls or wet wipes were provided so we all had to go to the bathrooms to wash our hands after eating. But the biggest disappointment were that all 5 main meals were served warm. We felt they had been sitting in the kitchen for a while before being brought to our table. The meal was not bad but not up to the standard of our previous visits and at £66 per person for 2 courses plus wine we really had higher expectations. I really hope that Joe Allen improves otherwise, sadly, we would not return soon

As we arrived the fire bell had rung so everyone was evacuated outside so we waited for a little while to go in. They came round with free prosecco for people.. offered it on tables next to us but never offered it to us. My partner doesnt drink so wouldn't have had it but the offer would've been good. Also sat us right next to another table too close when there were many other tables free. So was a bad start. Then asked for rose wine as there was no wine list brought. The waiter went off without asking what kind or what size or anything and brought back a small glass, I wanted a large glass. Wine was nice but a choice would've been good. Weve been coming here for years it's got such a great design. American Italian vibe great style and design with crisp white cloths and waiters looking fab. Theatre wall hangings and great lighting mixed with dark wood and brickwork. The perfect venue for lunch with friends or family or a romantic meal. Each time we come to London we go there as many times as possible sometimes twice a day. Am sad to say it was a let down from start to finish on this visit. The menu was totally different and seemed to have much more spice or fancy beans or other things that we weren't over enamoured about. There were no specials at all. I plumped for ribs as to be honest there wasnt that much else I fancied. They were lovely but said it came with slaw. It wasnt slaw it was a pile of pickled red cabbage..... the french fries were crisp but I didnt feel they were tasty but my partner liked them. I'd to ask for a finger bowl as I was really sticky and had no clean space left to wipe hands on my napkin. The warm friendly atmosphere and great welcoming service were missed, food choices too complex and it didnt feel special. We cancelled our next booking and saddened by loosing one our favourite dining places could only reminisce about how many wonderful times weve had previously. Even the cocktails weren't tempting.. very sad. Also much more expensive but dont mind that with the pandemic to get over.

Eye wateringly expensive, astonishingly poor quality. This Joe Allen is like a photocopy that's been recopied a 100 times, a faint shadow of the generous buzzy pre move Joe Allens. Service borders on incompetent. Not one of the servers knows a thing about the menu, then huffs and throws back heads when asked to ask again about allergens and ingredients - made much of on the menu and in publicity, but totally ignored by this shambles of a place. It really couldn't be bothered. After several checks and to-in and fro-ing, it transpires that the only thing on the menu suitable for someone who doesn't eat gluten is the "New York Strip Steak with "fat chips"" at £37.50. It arrives as a tired small piece of sirloin served with 10 small dice sized squares of potatoes. The same 10 squares of potatoes come with a stone cold Poached Eggs Hemingway. I shudder to think what he would have done if this had been put in front of him. The food arrives, the "fat chips" are an insult. The waiter is embarrassed. We ask for extra chips, (£5) 'They'll be quick." They arrive after we finish eating. A single scoop of ice cream takes ten minutes to be scooped from a tin in a restaurant only a third full. Staff walk by ignoring requests, or stand chatting. You'd get a better meal in McDonalds. Being constructive, I'd say the best thing the owners, Tim Healy and Lawrence Hartley, could do would be to fill this gastronomic void with concrete and exhibit it like Rachel Whiteread's "House" as a tragic monument to a once great restaurant.

Well, where to start? We're deeply sorry to have let you down. Please rest assured that we will digest your comments and make sure they are addressed. We are very proud to be the custodians of this iconic restaurant, and truly don't want to become a museum piece. We are retraining staff regarding allergen knowledge and the other issues you highlighted, so many thanks indeed.

Went with friends. Nice feel as you walk in that you could easily be in Lower Manhattan. The service was friendly but disorganised and slow. It was a long wait to take our orders, they didn't know what the specials were (we realised later that they were actually chalked up on boards on the walls) and he wasn't clear on some questions about allergens. The wine menu was quite poor and the mark ups were quite large. The food was not particularly nice with very vinegary dressings on the prawn salads (and not many prawns and a lot of lettuce), a tasteless steak and a tomato salad drowning in dressing. The desserts were disappointing with the peanut ice cream being particular overpriced (9 GBP for one scoop of ice cream). The cocktails were mixed with a couple being quite nice but one being pretty astringent. I wouldn't go back.

This is my fourth review in a number of years . My last two reviews in January 2015 and February 2018 were both glowing.I visited Joe Allens 24th April 2022 with my parents for Sunday Lunch - The Menu was the ' Brunch' Menu which was a dissapointment to begin with. We have been going to Joe Allen's since the day it opened in 1977. We all had the Classic Caesar Salad which was too creamy and we did not love it like in older times.I enjoyed the Chopped Steak but my father thought otherwise , The Chips were good. We had to wait 15 minutes for the bottle of Prosecco to arrive and 45 minutes for the first course . The New York Cheesecake with Raspberries and Broken Apple and Rhubarb Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream was the best of the meal. The Bill arrived with an extra bottle of Viognier being added which was taken off. As one of Joe Allens oldest customers it was a real shame as the service was slow and the food variable The Bill was £159 for the three of us.

Hello there, thank you so much for reviewing the restaurant again. As valued regulars you have always had a very special place in our hearts. We were shocked to see that you weren't happy with your "Brunch". We started brunch due to overwhelming customer demand - so this comes as something of a shock. We're sorry some of the food wasn't up to scratch but pleased you enjoyed the puds. Overall it's clear you weren't happy and I believe Tim and Lawrence have both emailed a personal apology. It only remains for me to reassure you that although brunch will continue to be a fixture we will look at all the other issues you raised and address them in training. We hope to see you all again at some point in the future - when we can redeem ourselves I'm sure. Very best wishes Debbie.
