About
Whether you're after a quick lunch, a romantic dinner by the river or just a friendly greeting in your local pub, we'd love to welcome you to The Grapes in Limehouse. We've been recommended by The Good Pub Guide since 1996, and you'll understand why when you visit.Overlooking the Thames, in a peaceful neighbourhood not that far from the bustle of Canary Wharf, The Grapes is one of the oldest pubs in London. Charles Dickens was a patron, and even made reference to the pub in his novel 'Our Mutual Friend'. Whilst our history goes back over 500 years, our menus are a little more up-to-date! If you're looking for something quick and tasty like a pie and a pint, you'll find tempting pub grub downstairs

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

On a dreich Thursday in February this was a most serendipitous lunch stop after our loverly visit to Fashion City exhibition at London Museum Docklands. The beer, soup, mussels and burger were all top notch.

Visited on New Year's Eve afternoon and initially the service and food was superb. The landlady was drinking neat Tequila out of a China cup and as the afternoon progressed she got more and more drunk. I went to the bar to order more drinks...including two soft drinks and was abused by the landlady saying shouldn't be allowed to drink soft drinks in a pub. Another customer said to her but you make more out of soft drinks than draft beer. Her response "I would make more money out of tea but this isn't a f*****g tea shop" We were waiting for our food or would have walked out and felt really uncomfortable with her further abuse of customers. She continued drinking heavily and when pulled up by another customer was heard to say I've been here for years they will never sack me. An absolute disgrace to the pub and the hospitality service. It'd people like this that shouldn't be allowed to work in the licensed trade, how can they control customers drinking when they cannot control their own. Shame such a superb pub is being run by bad management.More

This has always been a favourite of ours for a quick evening beer (or two). We stopped for lunch on a wet Monday and were not disappointed. Friendly service, tasty quickly served pub food, decent wine and time to watch the Thames go by -...overall, a great way to waste a cold wet afternoon.More

Came here later on in the evening, the pub was busy, 40 minute wait which was more than generous considering the amount of people in the food area, we only waited 30 ish minutes which we were delighted about (there was 5 of us) food...was lovely, hot chips and cold drinks, bar staff were working hard but were very welcoming and friendly, we live coming here and will continue to do so, thank you team grapes !!More

Cool place. Nice n old! Bartender/owner not all that friendly. Bordering on rude actually. I had paper money, which i did not know was "old". He saw that in my hand and turned and walked away from me while saying "thats old money. Im not...taking that." Visiting from Canada, I didnt know. The money was british pounds given to me as a gift for my trip. So i had to pull out a card and tap to pay. Had one cider and left. I was the only person in there. Not surprised. Too bad. I liked the place (I like old places!)More

I have been coming here for 20 years. Fantastic chips, great but small balcony literally over the Thames when the tide is in. Great staff as well. Definite recommendation especially if the weather is nice.

An old worldly pub apparently co-owned by Sir Ian Mckellan of Gandalf fame. There was a good selection of real ale and some bar snacks. We stopped for a quick drink after a walk along the river. This is not a large place so you...may struggle to get a seat but the atmosphere was welcoming and cosy. They were dog friendly. I’d love to go back for quiz night although I believe the staff sacked Sir Ian as quiz master :).More

Sat up at the then empty bar counter but before I could order, somebody just after me called for four pints of lager. Others of a disparate group filtered in and over a five minute period were all served by a barman whose shoulder I...could have tapped on - he was that close to me. When a couple, separate from the main group, approached the bar and were invited to order, it was time for me to take my leave.....More

Many years ago while walking to dinner, we came across a gentleman out for a walk with his dog. The dog lead him directly into a bar, which we laughed at and he turned to us and said “Looks like I gotta go now dosnnit?”...That bar was The Grapes and since then I had always wanted to go back and check it out. Finally I did and this place isn’t big but it just oozes old school pub charm. Beers on cask, pints of Guinness being served…there is food you can order (the fish and chips looked good actually) but mostly people are coming here to have drinks. A back side of the pub overlooks the Thames and I am pleased to announce that one thing still hasn’t changed after all these years: dogs are still allowed in. Note: like a lot of places we ran into, this is a card only operation now, so keep the cash at homeMore

Sorry can't remember prices but I think they are fairly standard London pub prices (i.e. £4 - £5 per pint).
