We were starved- it was the beginning of Covid and this is right in the museum. Its very bare bones. Big deal there is the soup- which was just ok. Everything else was edible but not really satisfying. We went out an hour or so...later and found some fast food to get a little more nourishment. Also I have to say the cashier was harried and not particularly happy to help on anything. Maybe it was the beginning of Covid that kind of soured the atsmosphere- but I would think its much worse right now, in October with a new flare up in England.More

I shared dinner with my daughter at a pre-theater seating. It was simply elegant and a perfect way to end our trip. We enjoyed beautfifully executed prix-fixe dinner. I do not remember the name of the soup, but it was my first time to taste...this chilled-beet concoction, and it was superb. The price is quite reasonable for the service, food quality and atmosphere. We enjoyed beautiful, iconic Pimms cup cocktails - so refreshing. Now, for the view. We enjoyed a spectacular view overlooking Trafalgar Square to Parliament on this lovely early summer evening. Make a reservation at least two weeks or more ahead of time.More

My daughter and I came here for lunch, and I'm so glad we did. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel special and very welcome, and were shown to a table by the window by the most charming and amusing man. We...had the two course set meal, and it was excellent. The waiter was so sweet and kind, with a fantastic sense of humour, and kept our water glasses well topped up without the need to ask. The view over the rooftops was an added bonus, allowing us to see the statue of Trafalgar and Big Ben (unfortunately swathed in scaffolding). It was a lovely lunch in a unique setting. I'd definitely love to return.More

Birthday lunch: such a treat. Can’t fault anything from the delightful waitress (just then right balance of helpful but not intrusive), great food and lovely drinks. Ham hock starter was just delicious as was the mushroom stroganoff main (vegan, by the way). Finished with a...triumphant raspberry sponge pudding. The only difficulty was feeling very full to tackle the stairs.More

I was traveling alone and thought I might be seen as a loser wanting to have afternoon tea alone, but the staff was so kind and accommodating I felt right at home. The offerings of the tea were impressive - you definitely won’t leave hungry...after all of the sandwich and desserts options are consumed! The views of London are amazing and the place is comfortable and well worth every penny. I’d recommend it to anyone and would visit again! I did find it a little difficult to find so I would recommend better signage in the gallery.More

Having taken the River boat to Docklands and visited both the National Gallery and the NPG, we were ready for tea. I was keen to take daughter and her friend visiting from Boston to a special place and I remembered how great the view is...over the National's rooftops and how the light fading as London lights up gives this restaurant an extra dimension. The young ladies were so fascinated to have a better view of Nelson across the skyline. Delicious delicate sandwiches and tiny macaroons and delicacies - all served on one of those three-tier plates. My sister and I had one in our dollhouse but never actually to use at home so remains a special treat!More

Booked for an early evening meal online. Telephoned at lunchtime on the day to ask if it was for Afternoon Tea (it wasn’t as we hadn’t selected that option). Then told could only have Afternoon Tea and only then if we came at 345. No...choice but to cancel and find somewhere else. No real apology. Would not recommend booking online.More

This place is unsurprisingly very popular. I think it’s got something to do with the pictures downstairs! Having just viewed the Pre-Raphaelite Sisters exhibition we ascended to our pre-booked table. Just as well we booked. Cocktails at the bar first. The limited but varied menu...gave a good choice (and that’s not a contradiction). I had sea bass with sides - excellent. My vegetarian partner loved the gnocchi. Service was excellent with Alessandro the head waiter being very attentive. I greatly recommend this restaurant even if you not looking at pictures. But, is closing soon for the refurbishment if the NPG. And for 3 whole years I’m told.More

I visited the portrait gallery to see a photography exhibition, and the lovely friend who I went with had booked lunch at the Portrait Restaurant. It was not her first visit, so she let me sit in the spot to get the interesting view of...the rooftops of Trafalgar Square, which in itself was a great start to a special meal. Everything about the lunch was excellent. The food, the service, the location all made it a wonderful experience. I thought that the price of the set meal was very good value, as the quality of the food was really good. All in all a special day!More

Had afternoon tea here and it was superb. Everything was so good. The views were gorgeous and good service. A bit pricey but worth it. And the Bellini we had was lovely.

Whatever you where to visit the museum should be just fine. We were there weekday for dinner and most people were “business casual” or more dressy.
