Restaurant's Favourite
Reviewed 4 February 2023 via mobile

We found this place on TripAdvisor when searching for restaurants near our hotel. This was a less than 5 minute walk from our accommodation. We were easily able to book online, and the waiting staff were friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. The menu has your usual...Indian favourites plus some more intriguing options. I usually eat veggie so was pleased with the veggie options. The portobello mushroom starter was unusual and delicious. I had the sag paneer as a main and kali dal makhani as a side with the lachcha paratha. Everything was very well balanced and gently spiced, without being greasy. The portions are generous and if we hadn't been staying overnight in a hotel and travelling the next morning, I would have asked to take the leftovers home. My dining partner had the chicken lollipops for starter and said they were very tasty and crispy, and the goan sea bass main. Special mention goes to the onion and green chilli naan and the chutneys tray. It all tasted delicious and free of any additives. We had wanted to try the chef's dessert platter but it wasn't available on the night we visited. Our waitress recommended the gulab jamun, which we washed down with the nicest ginger and masala chai I've had. Prices are very reasonable, and the atmosphere was nice, a mix of couples, young families and some larger groups of friends. We're not regularly in this part of London but any time we come back, we hope to revisit this little gem of a place!More

We were really looking forward to having a meal at the Salaam Namaste. Previous reviews had looked promising and its location was very convenient for us. The decor isn't quite the lavish affair described on their own website, in fact it all looks a bit...tired. No-one was there to greet us on arrival which we thought odd. Eventually, someone turned up and we were given a table by the window which we were fine with. We ordered a couple of beers and set about looking at menu. We opted for a keralan fish curry (with lemon rice), the hyderabad biryani, scallops and some popadoms and chutneys to start. The popadoms were fine. That's where it ended. The scallops (there were three and this was a main) were over cooked and lost in the overpowering taste of the sauce. )The spicing of the biryani was completely wrong for the dish, there was very little meat and it was dry. The curry was inedible (I discovered after having one mouthful). The rice had a wedge of lemon on top as garnish, there was no infused flavour of lemon at all. We told the waiter about the curry and he said he would speak to the Chef. Nothing happened. When it came to paying, we raised the issue with the curry again and after some time, the waitress agreed to take the price of that dish off the menu. Even with that concession and the fact that we'd booked via Open Table for an early meal offer, the bill was steep. The beers were overpriced even by restaurant standards. After paying, there was a further conversation with the waitress about our experience when we told that the chef was new and didn't know what he was doing. It was a shame we hadn't been told that beforehand ...More

After some difficulty, we found the Restaurant. We were looking forward to set menu of £ 17.00 for Vegetarian and £ 17.95 for Non Vegetarian. When we asked for this, we were told that it is only for Take Away. The web-site does not make...it clear and we were very disappointed. The menu given was very expensive and service was poor as only one waiter was working and could not coupe. The vegetarian dishes we ordered was over charged and 12.5% service charge is not acceptable as we did not get what we wanted. The lacha paratha was very cold and they did not replace it and in the end we had to have garlic paratha. There was exceptional delays and we got very late, having started our dinner at 5.30pm. The train strike did not help. We think some honesty and transparency of the menu is required.More

We visited here during a short stay to london. The food is delicious. It’s a small restaurant and super cosy. Nice if you want to escape the crowds. We did pre book as I can imagine it’s popular. Even though they haven’t officially got a...kids menu this didn’t matter as our 8 year old thoroughly enjoyed trying abit of everything. The staff are really welcoming and we would definitely recommend for a tasty curry.More

Having stayed in Bloomsbury many times over the years, & at a nearby hotel twice now, I have no idea why we hadn't noticed this restaurant before - it's less than 5 minutes' walk from the hotel, ideal for dinner at the end of a...busy day full of walking. Delightful friendly staff, efficient & courteous service, & a really lovely menu with quite a few dishes that were new to us. A restaurant near where I live in the north east of Scotland, now sadly closed, was the first time I had experienced Indian 'fine dining' & Salaam Namaste was the second, & I was so pleased it more than lived up to the standard of my much missed local venue. You can mix & match starters or 'small plates' (my favourite way to eat), share dishes, pretty much do whatever takes your fancy choice-wise, which is lovely. Must admit to having onion bhaji & saag paneer - always my benchmark when eating in a new to me Indian restaurant - simply superb, & the saag paneer was a little differently prepared to what I've had in (many!) other Indian restaurants in various locations. Definitely on our list to return to, hopefully next year on our annual visit (if not before) & a huge thank you to everyone here for making our dinner such a delicious & enjoyable occasion.More

The food was excellent and reasonably priced. There is a full range of excellent curries. The service was always excellent. It was easy to make a booking. We ate there several times during our London Visit. The restaurant is slightly out of the way so...it avoids the crowds although it was always well attended.More

We were intrigued to see how the food would be based on the mixed reviews but were very pleasantly surprised. Having dined at Dishoom a few weeks earlier we found the veggie side dishes we had like the Dal and the saag to be as...good, if not better. Everything was very tasty and the staff were friendly. Would definitely return.More

5 out of 5 because the food and service was superb - never had Dry Crab before but it was lovely as a Starter. We ordered a Goan Sea Bass curry and a Lamb Banjara curry to share, which were both superb. Garlic Naans were...also nice and felt very guilty leaving most of them, as we were both stuffed. Staff very attentive and we had a really nice meal…More

Sallam Namaste used to be an exciting 'destination' restaurant, presided over by an adventurous chef from Karachi who created a really distinctive fusion cuisine. He must surely have left, since it is now an industry-standard 'Indian' restaurant. Sauces are heavy, especially one combined with delicate...scallops. Portions of meat and fish are small-- part of the general price cutting in tough times. A meal for three with drinks cost over £180. Like many restaurants in this area it is drawing in very few midweek diners, and i fear for its future. Lovely waitstaff. But it is no longer exceptional, just OK.More

Many items in the menu were not available, this on a Saturday night! The quality of the food was very poor. I was served a different starter than the one ordered, and also a different main than the one ordered, this without telling me why...they had unilaterally changed my order! Couldn’t ask why as the waitress was rushed off her feet. The chicken was bone dry and tasteless, the pilau rice was tasteless, the prawns weren’t fresh! The only decent things we had were the poppadoms, the nan bread, and the onion bajis. Will never visit again!More

From the dips and home made poppadoms, tikka masala and chicken dhansak were soo full of taste and flavoured definitely recommend a visit. Friendly atmosphere and welcome ensured...we’d be returning again. Oh yes, and the price is very very good! Thank you for a great comforting and delicious meal.
