One MICHELIN Star: High quality cooking, worth a stop!
The Ninth is a restaurant by London-based chef Jun Tanaka. Located on Charlotte street in the heart of London’s buzzy Fitzrovia neighbourhood, the contemporary, yet warm and inviting 90-seater restaurant offers up simple but refined French Mediterranean-style dishes, all made for sharing. The a la carte menu – available at lunch and dinner – focuses on the finest seasonal produce and vibrant, honest flavours. Specialties include house-cured meats and fish, robust French classics with Jun’s signature fresh twist, and lovingly thought-out vegetable dishes that are more than just ‘sides’.

The ambience was enjoyable. The service was as expected. I didn’t enjoy my meal. I’ve prepared more tasty salad, fish and pasta dishes at home. I sent back my main pasta dish, it was bland and tasted like it was prepared by an amateur chef....To be honest, nothing I tasted made an impression. Would not recommend The Ninth to anyone, especially at the prices charged. This was my first experience of a Michelin star restaurant and, if that's what Michelin star is, I'll stick to my locals where I eat scrumptious well presented food for a quarter of the price. I am devastated to write this review as the occasion was to celebrate my father’s 70th birthday. He loves food, but he didn't love his meal at The Ninth. None of us did. We picked a special restaurant for the occasion and it was far from special. As it was a special occasion, we did not want to ruin the evening voicing our discontent, hence my review.More

We went here for my father in law’s 70th birthday. We don’t frequent Michelin star restaurants often, although we have been fortunate enough to go to some amazing ones. We save these kind of places for special occasions, we anticipate the bill will be high...and we therefore expect an exceptional eating experience and value for money. Firstly, I never review restaurants, but I feel so strongly about our experience that I can’t not share with others! We didn’t have terrible food, in fact it was fine, but we were left so totally underwhelmed - a bill of over £400 was completely unjustified. The service was fine, the ambience was fine, the food was fine. But that was all it was. Nothing blew us away (and we had a decent selection between the 5 of us). The wine is so grossly overpriced it further takes away from the enjoyment of it. The table was too small for all the food - the waitress wanted to stagger our food (probably for that reason) but we wanted starters and mains - not unreasonable I don’t think! We sent back a pasta dish - my brother in law actually thought it might be out of a Heinz can! He had a risotto instead (the best thing we ordered). When the bill came, they had charged us for the risotto despite this being a replacement meal. No apologies from the kitchen. No complimentary drink for my brother in law. Whenever I have been to a high end restaurant to celebrate an occasion and let them know, there has always been a token desert/ cake or something from the establishment. At The Ninth? - a card, signed from the staff…! Needless to say that did not go on the mantelpiece next to the other cards! (If anyone finds it on the Jubilee line then happy belated birthday from Jun!) Not very generous. So all in all we are left wondering how on earth this got its star and would encourage anyone looking for a special meal to look at the hundreds of other restaurants that will blow you away for that money.More

You cannot criticise the food, whilst the portions look small, each and every one is composed and a symphony on your palate, the quality of the ingredients shines through BUT the wines are seriously overpriced. Whilst good, a quick google on some of the wines...we drank at £40+ a bottle were readily available to buy at £7 average at many places. I appreciate that restaurants have has a hard time but I won’t go backMore

This is really worth a detour for anyone seeking something out of the ordinary. Some brilliant treatments including amazing tempura and really a wide variety of plates which are intended to be shared made this a great experience.

Crammed interior with no wow factor! Had to move once as table of two was set out for three. My issues with the food was the value- told that it was sharing dishes but tiny portions including mains made it poor value for money. Beetroot...dish good. Artichoke - two sliced piece of artichoke- inadequate for the dish and too salty. Pasta- the black pasta- malloreddus cuttlefish was good- reasonable size. The langoustine ravioli for £23 was 4 piece! If sharing with 4 you get one pieces which poor value for money for a sharing plate. Mains of turbot which was £38- small dish and tasted muddy- it would be poor quality fish for turbot to taste muddy! Accompaniment of roast cauliflower was £10- too much was the portion and what it was. Best dish was the pain perdu-£12 but was very good- still overpriced for desert- French toast soaked in custard- absolutely delicious Service was average. Wines- Over pieces. Bottles for less than £10 being sold with 4X mark up !More

This was a great restaurant to enjoy a family style dinner with shared dishes. It is like an elevated izakaya/tapas style restaurant. The appetizers, main courses and dessert were all very good. Cool and lively atmosphere and reservations definitely recommended as it was very crowded...when we were there. Cocktail, beer and wine list were all very decent. Attentive servers.More

Dinner at The Ninth capped off my week-long culinary escapade through Europe. With 6 Michelin stars under my belt already, The Ninth was up against some heady competition. It more than held its own! My turbot main course was out of this world. Moist, flavorful,...perfectly cooked - I don't think I've had such a good piece of seafood in a while (note that it comes bone-in, but don't be deterred as the bone is quite large and sturdy, so the fish can be peeled off it easily w/o one getting small bone bits in every mouthful). My beef cheek starter with horseradish sauce was equally flavorful, but arrived a bit on the cool side, unfortunately. Service was very attentive and welcoming by all, including the floor manager and my charming Milanese bartender/waitress. Solid selection of wines, including by the glass. Homey, comfortable space with a good vibe and ambiance. Highly recommended!More

After several outstanding personal visits, last night I enjoyed the fixed dinner party menu with a larger table of colleagues. Absolutely outstanding - retaining the quality of the a la carte with a larger group menu isn't easy, and The Ninth nailed it. Thankyou!
