Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

It was pasta evening £8.50 for pasta and wine .. good value if it was what was described....pasta said linguine we got rigatoni tubes ... it said crab and tomatoes there were no tomatoes .. we had to ask for them. We had a bottle of wine it was put on our table and left with the cork in .. we had to ask for it to be opened . We ordered hot cross bun bread and butter pudding expecting layers of hot Cross bun with fruit and eggy custard .. we got hot cross bun with custard on top !!!! We came 2 weeks early and ordered carbonara to be presented with a tomato and bacon sauce with chilli when queried ‘ the blackboard is wrong ‘ but no indication from staff it wouldn’t be carbonara .. It can be good value but there is to much competition and good eating places round here to get it so wrong so we will be going else where from now on

On a search for suitable outdoor eating venues, as I don't trust eating inside a restaurants yet and this place looked great. Service was good and I had mussels, which were quite good, not overly hot, maybe a piping hot bowl would have helped. Everyone at the table was happy with their choices as well. We did all mention that the patio heaters were not all that effective. The fingernail for the shells only held about 5 shells, not the 30 shells in my meal.

Visited Norwich to help our youngest Daughter set up for a new chapter in her life. We loved the city and it’s many pubs and restaurants. The Unthank Arms was very welcoming with a good bistro style menu and good service. It is dog friendly which was a plus. The gin is served with floating with juniper berries which went down well. Highly recommended for a visit.

Despite arriving late due to terrible traffic in the city, we were welcomed to this lively pub on a very busy Friday night. We quickly ordered and food soon arrived. I had sausage and mash and although some people think this is a pretty standard dish it was exceptional. Top quality sausages, real mash potato and the carrots, parsnips and cabbage were cooked to perfection. I love this meal when it is done right and this certainly was. Sadly too full for a dessert, save that for another time. Waiting staff were fantastic and very attentive without being over bearing. Will definitely be back again! Thank you to all the team.

Very busy as is everywhere with eat out to help out. Difference here is the very ordinary menu clearly designed for the eat out to help out. School dinners comes to mind, tiger prawns overcooked, fish like it was out of the freezer and chips cooked hours ago then re-fried. Menu so limited it could have fitted on a playing card. This business is missing the trick! The trick is that you are still being paid top dollar for the food albeit £20 from the government but you are hacking off new customers with poor quality who possibly would have returned had you tried harder. Greed might be a factor here possibly.

We had 3 courses. There was nothing wrong with anything we ordered but the food was simply ok without being standout in any way. Prices are at the upper end of pub grub but portions (especially starters) are small so rating is downgraded as not especially good value. Beer was decent as was wine. Service also good although sometimes a bit of a wait to attract attention.

We went for a Sunday roast at 4:30 today: the beef was so tough and overcooked that neither of us could eat it. The vegetables were also over cooked. The waitress brought us the bill before we had even finished.

Dinner at Unthank Arms, it was superb. I have lots of food allergies which can be tricky when eating out. But I spoke to the chef beforehand, he was open, asked the right questions and made me a beautiful and delicious dinner. I am so grateful, I will definitely come back.

I wish I could leave a better review than this as I have been a fan of this pub since the 1980s, and because the staff could not have been more helpful given we had to book at short notice. The pub was pretty empty and there wasn’t much atmosphere, but the issue was that the food was not great. The falafel burgers were stodgy and lacked flavour, and the tuna was overcooked, even though we were assured it would arrive rare. The chips (regular and sweet potato) were very salty indeed and we couldn’t eat many of them. Things really improved with the puddings - they were attractive, tasty and fresh.

I’m not usually one to complain and I’ve never written a negative review before, but this was certainly the worst roast dinner I think I’ve ever had. My boyfriend and I were happy with the service from the staff and it was quickly brought out, however, everything tasted like it had been microwaved. The potatoes were anaemic and chewy and not crispy at all. They vegetables were just boiled and flavourless. I had the lentil nut roast, which was incredibly dry and chewy on the top. My boyfriend had the roast beef and left most of it. The Yorkshire pudding he had was definitely straight out of a packet and everything seemed as though it had been quickly zapped in the microwave. It would’ve been nice to have been offered some gravy on the side too, as it was so dry altogether. I’ve had lots of lovely roast dinners in Norwich so would definitely recommend going elsewhere if you’re booking a Sunday lunch!

Booked table for 4 on Friday night - service was a little slow, but staff and manager apologized as they had a celebratory party on site. As a result our starters were FOC. The food was outstanding - we all had something different and everyone was most impressed. That chef is a huge talent. Liked the food so much we returned for the Sunday roast and the three meat roast was huge and everything cooked really well. Staff were friendly and attentive. Pub was clean and tidy and not noisy - with no TV/ loud music etc and tables sufficiently well spaced you could chat easily as a group of diners. Pleased to see it is also dog and child friendly though we had neither with us.

Everybody i dealt with at the Unthank, from my initial phone enquiry, to the evening itself was on the ball! Thomas took charge on the night, but my daughter had spoken to the allergist trained member of staff before hand and the chef provided a safe meal for my Grandson. My extended family took over half of the downstairs Victorian bar, and there was a large wedding group upstairs and in the garden, but our food came promptly. Was always hot, and delicious. If you're looking for a positive, 'can do' attitude where the service is friendly and the food is excellent. Look no further if you're in Norwich.

We booked lunch on Saturday outside and went to the bar before we sat down as instructed on the blackboard outside in the garden. I stood at a very quiet bar with three members of staff behind it for a good amount of time before anyone acknowledged that I was there. The waitress then looked up and said with a very grumpy face ‘someone will be with you in a minute’ before slamming a drink down on the tray. It was clear that the staff had had some sort of disagreement as the atmosphere was very awkward but it made me feel extremely uncomfortable. After a while a smiley waiter came and sat us but it was very clear that the staff were not working well together. Have been before during the week and had great service but this was a really disappointing visit and I would safely say I won’t return for a while.

I’m not a restaurant owner but I do own a small tea/ coffee shop so I’m always conscious of service and food quality. I have to say that the food was restaurant quality as was the presentation and service. Home made desert too, which is rarely the case . Very impressive!

We booked a family meal (for 12) on Sunday at which the service was appalling, we had to ask to order our first round of drinks and at no point was the water on the tables replenished or additional drinks offered. I spoke to one of the staff who I assumed was a manager and made him aware of how disappointed we were, he said he would raise it with the supervisor, who turned out to be the member of staff who seemed more interested in having a social at the bar with the other staff than looking after her diners. Unfortunately the food didn't make up for it either. All in all a disappointing meal, we wont be returning.
