About
Farmyard is a Michelin listed Norwich based 'Bistronomy' style restaurant, where a relaxed 'bistro' experience meets the top quality produce and vibrant flavours normally found in "gastronomic" fine dining joints. Everything is prepared in their open kitchen, including the sourdough bread, baked every day using their "mother" and served with handmade butter. Meat, fish and vegetables are cooked over charcoal on the "Bertha" oven for incredible flavour. Their approach is simple; handpicked ingredients, great cooking, carefully chosen wine and knowledgeable service in a refreshingly contemporary space. Andrew Jones, Exec Chef & Owner After 12 years of working in high-end London restaurants for Michelin starred chefs such as Richard Corrigan and Claude Bosi, Norfolk reared Andrew Jones moved back home to launch his first venture, Farmyard in 2017.

Been wanting to go here for a while, finally visited with the current "Eat Out to Help Out' deal on.
We ate late in the afternoon, and when we arrived we were offered a couple of options of tables inside, or outside on the currently pedestrianised road. We sat outside in the sun, although the council could have done the road closure a lot better with nicer barriers, I quite like sitting in the city streets.
We were bought disposable menus, and a freshly sanitised drinks menu.
All the food was excellent, portion sizes were perfect and prices are what I would expect for the quality.
I had the wagyu burger followed by the Farmyard chocolate bar, which is one of the best desserts I've ever eaten. My partner had 3 courses from the set menu, which were all great and the price is actually quite reasonable.
The staff were very good, service was quick, and even though we were the last table of the lunch we never felt rushed.
Will definitely be coming back in the future.

Whilst we have previously had evening meals at Farmyard this was our first visit for lunch and use of the set menu. As always we were warmly greeted at the door and duly sanitised given seating options. A couple of glasses of very palatable Viognier arrived whilst we made our choices. Even though we went for the Set Menu there is still plenty of choice, we selected Smoked haddock chowder and Duck & morcilla crubeens to start, Hake for mains and Farmyard white chocolate bar, (I must admit I do prefer the dark chocolate alternative), as desserts. They were all beautifully presented and tasted excellent. As always the staff were professional, friendly, slick and Covid compliant. The atmosphere and ambience were as good as in the evening, lunch being as leisurely as you wished. The set menu is good value for money and with the EOtoHO discount was excellent. We enjoyed lunch so much we will be introducing friends to it in a couple of weeks. Thanks to all at a Farmyard.

We attended on the week of Valentines and indulged in the 3 course set menu with a bottle of prosecco for two for £60. We both had the bbq celeriac blue corn taco which was absolutely delicious. We both agreed these were the closest tacos we have had since having them in Mexico and could have eaten more. I would be more than happy with this as a main. We then both opted for the bavette steak, kale puree, kale, and a side each of fries. The portion slightly on the small side, but fine for the price we paid. For desserts we decided to order differently and I opted for the ginger sponge pudding and my husband ordered the deliciously sickly indulgent Farmyard Chocolate bar. We very much enjoyed our meal and it was a fantastic valentines deal. After a bottle of prosecco, needless to say I was merry leaving!

The staff from the beginning to the end of the meal were very engaging and accommodating, all the while taking appropriate lengths of time between serving and ordering food and drink. The menu offers a range of Norfolk produce highlighting the multiple established relationships the restaurant has with different suppliers. The name of the restaurant, 'Farmyard', however does not correspond with the variety of seafood served alongside the likes of beef, lamb and venison. The decor of the restaurant is minimalistic but complimented with a large, calming abstract artwork and open view of the kitchen.
With regards to the food, the portions were borderline minimal at times given the price. Nevertheless the quality of the meat was sublime, having been cooked with thorough attention to detail. One point of note would concern the level of creativity of the dishes. Having noted the restaurant owner previously worked with the likes of Michelin starred chefs, one might come to expect perhaps more flare or embellishing of the dishes which might measure up to the level of experience of the staff can offer.
On a side note, the snacks whilst delectable, were better served in bigger proportions as starters or sides. The complementary allioli sauce was also somewhat bland.
I would not hesitate to recommend the restaurant for a more intimate occasion among friends or family, but would hope there is a continued trajectory of growth for this establishment.

The food was very good and everyone enjoyed their dishes but some choices were very small in portion size for the type of food it was and for the money charged.
The venue is smart and relaxed.
Service was slow between courses and staff were not attentive. At times there were no staff on the restaurant floor at all.
Our table was part cleared of empty plates then left until I requested they be cleared.
The discretionary 10% service charge was part paid by us which reflected our experience but the waiter tried to insist this was compulsory, which we disputed, and it was agreed we did not need to pay it in full. This left a sour taste from a rather mixed experience and I was actually still hungry when we left!
I would recommend the restaurant but it's hit and miss on portions depending on what you order.

We looked forward to our visit, our first night out since lockdown and what a let down it was.
The restaurant looks great, menu is limited which I like, I chose the smoked haddock chowder which was delicious, apart from the extremely snotty egg on top - not a problem as my husband swooped in and devoured that! He'd ordered the ham hock and chicken terrine, which came with fresh sourdough but no butter (which they make themselves) so the egg came in handy as the dish as a whole would be quite dry without it. Seemed odd.
Main was a burger which my husband said was very tasty, and looked it too. However, he'd had better and for far less money. I'd ordered bevette, this is where it all went really wrong. The steak was TINY, I'd ordered medium and it was so well done it was crispy outside and a tough old boot to chew. This sat on a few scraps of cabbage, some minute chopped things adorned the top. I'm guessing that was my shallot and mushroom but it was chopped so small and there was so little of it I couldn't tell. A brown watery jus on the outside of the plate and that was an £18 worthy meal apparently. We'd ordered triple cooked chips to go with both meals (another £4) luckily or I would have left hungry. Did I finish the steak? Yes because I was n over and practically reversed to our table so as not to talk or make eye contact and put the bill down whilst looking the other way and walked off without uttering a word!
So based on the quality of the food that night and the way my feedback was handled, we would not go back. It was all sadly, very average.

Having read several reviews we were quite looking forward to our vist. I have to say that overall I was quite disappointed. Obviously the setting and décor is a personal thing, but I cannot say the 'warehouse chic' of the Farmyard was my cup of tea, and was amazed at how cold it was in there. The lady at the next table had to put her coat on. As for the food, well the starters were quite imaginative, but rather expensive. We both had fish mains. I know fresh fish is expensive, but I feel £19 for a very small piece of cod without accompaniments was pricey. Add to that that fairly bog standard veg was £3.50 a (small) portion, it made the main course quite expensive in my opinion. We did not bother with sweet/cheese. Drinks, likewise are perhaps 20% overpriced. Doubt if we will return, as for us the drive into Norwich is not merited by the food, and we can eat as well, if not better locally without the journey.

My starter was the ham, egg & chips however there were no chips! The waitress explained it was like a basket and it was just like tagliatelle but only part cooked. I couldn’t cut with a knife probably not helped by the fact it was heated in a microwave. My lamb main was very nice but only warm not hot the rhubarb tart for dessert was lovely. However my vegan daughter-in-law was not really catered for even though we asked when booking if they catered for vegans. Extremely pretentious food at ridiculous prices. She was given dry bread for a starter or “snack” but they didn’t have olive oil or balsamic vinegar. One main choice and only sorbet for dessert our local pub does much better than that

Here for a celebration meal, and having enjoyed the sister restaurant at the Dial House was so looking forward to eating here.
However, a good range of dishes on the menu was not matched with the delivery. The starter was very small and disappointing, as was the main. Halibut is an expensive fish, but the small size of piece on the dish was only outdone by the small number of clams in the chowder,,,,
Little choice on the dessert menu, but then the cheese board was highly overpriced for what came up.....
All a bit mediocre and average and certainly not a 'destination' restaurant.

2 vegetarian dishes on the menu, one with pesto. I asked if the pesto was vegetarian and neither the waitress nor the chef seemed to be aware that Parmesan isn’t vegetarian. That’s almost acceptable for a waitress, but for a chef not to know, that’s worrying. So just check before ordering. My husband, a meat eater, had a nice meal, however.

The premises were great, creating a nice relaxed atmosphere and the staff were friendly and attentive. Sadly the food failed to live up to the pictures on the website, the description in the menu or the asking price. I selected Ham, Egg and Chips for a starter which, having seen how the menu was written, was never going to be just that and so it proved. The ham was hock meat and was delicious, the egg was a small yoke floating in a kind of broth that it disappeared into without trace when broken. The chips were thin spiral cut potato arranged into a small ball and deep fried or microwaved, you really couldn't tell which and It was rock hard. I had to forced my knife and fork into gaps and lever it apart whereupon it shattered into smaller pieces but still did not absorb any of the broth in the bottom of the dish.
My main course was chargrilled Bavette (flank steak) and this was cooked to perfection. It came sat on what was described as a bed of Heritage Kale, it was more of a sheet than a bed as there wasn't enough to have some with each piece of steak. The kale seemed overcooked and produced no discernible taste. the final item on this main was chimichurri, usually a green uncooked sauce, there were a few very small pieces of unidentified green 'stuff' on the plate along with a tasteless brown watery jus. Lovely steak spoilt by a lack of carbohydrates and sufficient vegetables to take it to another level. My wife had Chicken leg with leak and truffle, again the chicken leg was perfectly cooked but was only accompanied by one strand of leak and truffle shavings, the latter were fine but the leak I suspect was a young one as the full length strip provided was unable to be cut into pieces, even with my steak knife. She ordered a side of Potato Tureen which appeared to have been deep fried as it was so crisp it was difficult for her to cut.
My desert was steamed ginger sponge with a flavoured ice cream (can't remember what) and pineapple, the sponge was divine, the ice cream was just that if there was a flavour it was overpowered by the ginger. The pineapple slice this all sat on seemed to have been cut with a bacon slicer it was so thin that it was translucent.
At regular intervals during the evening the area of the restaurant we were sat in was invaded by a light smoke and the smell of hot fat from the kitchen, which made two of our party, who suffer from asthma, begin to feel uncomfortable.
I'm afraid the menu, the food presentation and some of the flavours failed to live up to descriptions, lacked substance and was not what I would describe as value for money. I certainly won't be returning which is a shame because it offered such promise and the setting was great.

....not a chance, another lovely meal in great surroundings. It was somewhat busier than our last visit and another member of staff would have assisted with the ‘flow’, but service was still very acceptable and enjoyable. It was good to see that the menu had altered a bit with the season so giving a nice, different set of choices. Duck leg & mackerel starters, Hake & Bavette, (superb), mains followed by Earl Grey sticky toffee pudding & Orange & Ginger sponge desserts. All were tasty and beautifully presented. As before the wine list is varied hence suiting all tastes and pockets. Our only disappointment was that they had run out of the British Sparkling wine for an aperitif, we’ll just have to go back! If you want great food, great ambience with attentive but not ‘fawning’ staff go to Farmyard, you’ll enjoy it.

Food was quirky but menu wasn't the easiest to understand so had to ask about quite a few items to understand exactly what it was.
As a beer drinker they had no choice of beer at all and only 3 choices of either a draught lager, low alcohol bottle beer and a bottle of cider. If you wanted wine they had a very large selection.
The staff were very good and helpful
The food was nice and we enjoyed it, but not sure we would return.
The food wasnt the cheapest with a 3 course meal and a bottle of prosecco plus 4 pints between 4 costing over £200.
Please note that when you get the bill a 10% service charge is already added but the card reader machines asks if you would like to make a gratuity be careful you dont tip twice without realising.

Have been here a few times before and has always been good value decent food. This was our first visit since lockdown and it seems the prices have gone up and the quality down.
We both had the slow cooked Dexter chuck steak, this was for both of us terrible, as someone who likes to cook low and slow I have never been served a slow cooked cut of meat that was in fact medium rare, this steak was fatty, chewy and pretty poor all round. It was definitely not slow cooked. For £21 plus another £5 for chips this is unacceptable.
We did complain and they did remove my partners main from the bill as she was not prepared to persevere with hacking away at it and left most it , so some credit for that.
On the plus side the service was excellent as was the wine however the low quality of the main put a real downer on an otherwise lovely night out with friends.

On a weekend visit this restaurant was recommended by a local and I am very glad we changed our plans to go back the next day. The set lunch has a superb choice of dishes and the fish dish was beautifully cooked and presented. The restaurant was very friendly and although functional in design and layout the atmosphere was comfortable. Start your on your visit to Norwich, you wont be disappointed.
