Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Chose this place as they have a couple of great vegan options on the menu (for me that is as my partner is a full on meat eater) however when we ordered we were told the mash wasn't vegan and was that OK? Well no...not if you're vegan! So it was pie, peas and gravy for me. I mean how hard is it to make the mash with a dairy free spread (there are countless fabulously tasty butter alternatives out there) or just have vegan mash aswell so we vegans can have the full experience? No oat or soya milk, so I couldn't even have a hot drink. Not to mention there were no vegan puds on the menu. Such a shame as the pie (mushroom and ale) was very tasty but that in itself won't warrant a repeat visit until the vegan offerings are sorted out.More

Great food, fairly priced, dog friendly ( even a barky grumpy and tired Dog ) and the Staff and atmosphere made it really special, thank you.

Quite disappointed really, after hearing great things about this place! Firstly, I expected home-cooked food cooked on the premises but the pies aren’t cooked on the premises (I heard the owner himself say this). Secondly, it took literally 5 mins from ordering our food to...it being presented to us so I felt it was essentially a microwaved meal! The pie was small but tasty, the mash was a bit bland and the gravy tasted like granules. We weren’t asked if we enjoyed our meal so maybe they don’t care? Wouldn’t recommend or return 🙁More

What a special little place! We were a group of seven so probably should have thought to book, however after a very short wait we were seated without an issue. The young waiter (who was on his own front of house) was absolutely fantastic; helpful,...polite and good humoured. The cafe itself is fantastic inside, a real gem with lots to look at - felt like a trip back in time. The food was just out of this world; so simple but cooked to perfection. My steak and ale pie was delicious, and none of my party had a single complaint. Excellent value for money, and homely cosy atmosphere. Would return in a heartbeat.More

Absolutely lovely little gem of a place. Food was delicious and very accomodating for party of 7 in a busy small space at dinner time on a Saturday. Group had a variety of Pies and Mash as well as Bangers and Mash All highly recommended...and went down well. Custard and Cake puddings are to die for and the cost is very very reasonable. 10/10.More

This is our second visit here now and we have loved it both times. Quaint little restaurant. Service was great considering the 2 people visibly on staff. Perfect little setting and desserts were lovely too!

We visited during goth weekend, had to wait 30 minutes to get in but well worth it. Delicious steak and ale pie, mushy peas and mash. Washed down with a mug of camp coffee. Staff were friendly and polite.

First time visiting, the restaurant was cosy and very interesting with the history of the building, the pies were cooked to perfection lots of meat in the filling with a tasty pastry crust, beautiful fresh mashed potato and peas all swilled down with a lovely mug...of hot tea would highly recommend and will return again. The young man serving was friendly and informative and an asset to the businessMore

This cafe was one of just a few open close to free parking next to the harbour just as the sun was setting. What a find! Some of the mediocre reviews just don't get it. - This is a themed cafe that cleverly takes you...back to the 2nd World War. The pies are homemade and the jam roly poly with custard is fantastic and (get it!) made to a traditional recipe. Plastic chequered tablecloths, and tea is served in a mug. My mother who lived through the Blitz would have loved it. Don't just take it from us - the best recommendation of all was that we were clearly outnumbered by locals who were obviously regulars. - So lucky to have this gem on their doorstep.More

We popped in here on a whim after just arriving in Whitby. Upon arrival, the young male who was working told us straight away that they would be closing soon (which we obviously did not realise) and the menu would therefore be limited. This wasn’t...a very warm welcome. We then ordered some drinks and our meals and the server’s attitude did not improve. He seemed annoyed that we were there and was very blunt when serving us. He seemed to be the same with the other customers inside too. We then decided to order Jam Roly Poly for dessert only to find it had absolutely no jam in and was very dense. Wouldn’t recommend! Our main meal was lovely however the service was unwelcoming, cold and uncomfortable. We were in and out within 20 minutes.More

Step back in time and enjoy proper comfort food. We both had the steak pie and mash and was not disappointed. Very generous portions and extremely tasty. We did struggle to finish our puddings but felt it would be rude not to partake in some...jam roly-poly and custard! Really quirky little place and well worth a visit when in Whitby. Only annoyance was a couple who felt the need to play videos on their phone and make face time calls…shame when we were trying to enjoy the 1940s ambience. This has no bearing on the review just hope it encourages people to be more considerate maybe!More

I had seen Various you tubers go into here. As soon as I walked in I felt at home. The smell of mint sauce was greeted with home made pie. I had the vegan woodland mushroom pie with mask potato and mushy peas. A sachet...of mint sauce was applied and a cup of Yorkshire tea mmmmm. The meal, music and atmosphere was spot on you could not fault this place full stop. Will i go again of course i will.More
