We called here on our way to our accommodation at whitby for an early Friday tea. This is big place with plenty to offer on the menu including usual pub favourites (fish & chips, pies etc), burgers, salads, grills, curry & pizza. Very friendly and courteous staff and reasonably priced. We had 1 fish & chips and 1 pizza. The pizza was 12inch and served with fries and homemade coleslaw - a lot of food and all really tasty. Fish and chips was served with bread and butter and mushy peas. This portion wasn’t quite so plentiful so only criticism is that a larger portion of fish would have gone down better. From our experience we would probably recommend fish & chips from the seafront places which offer better value & bigger fish.

As a family group of 6, this restaurant was ideal, clean and spacious, covid secure measures including see through plastic curtains between booths (other tables also available), which were in keeping with the decor. The restaurant was spacious with lots of tables, not crowded at all. The menu was varied, starters ranged from soup to seafood, some main courses included the delicious coconut fish curry, the chicken balti (with big chunks of chicken - great value). Desserts were available, but not the restaurants strong point. The server, Chris, deserves a special mention as he worked really hard, was polite, industrious and was a credit to the restaurant.

We ate here as a family of 5 when staying nearby on holiday. We tried to pre-book for an early evening meal but it said no tables were available so we selected the lunch timeslot instead and booked the latest slot at 4:45. It wasn't busy when we arrived and we got the evening (all day?) menu so it didn't make any difference. Our first impressions were very favourable. The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful and the restaurant was beautifully decorated with a great atmosphere. We were taken to sit in the garden room which had lovely booths to sit in, lovely lights hanging up and views into the gardens. The menu had a lot of different options to choose from and it was nice to see the children's menu had a few different options as well as the usual chicken nuggets etc, such as ham, egg and chips, macaroni cheese and scampi. The food is more on the expensive side than some other places nearby but we thought it was worth it as the food tasted delicious and the portions were generous. Our bill came to just under £100 for 3 adult meals, 2 kid's meals, 3 desserts and 7 drinks. The children loved the garden with the Gruffalo statues, the chickens and the peacocks too!

I have previously left a great review for this place as we had a fabulous meal back in February. However we visited Whitby in July and I booked a meal here to take my family, telling them how wonderful it is. The building is beautiful I was so disappointed, I had been looking forward to my roast after a 10 mile walk that day, as were my family. We were booked for 6pm and they had already run out of several things on the menu. I had roast turkey with all the veg etc. My meat was cold, the gravy was very thick and we weren’t offered any more, when we asked for more it never arrived. The roast pot were under cooked and hard in the middle and the carrots were terrible, they tasted of oranges! We weren’t offered any more drinks other than when we arrived and our jug of water never arrived that we requested. I really bigged the place up but felt very disappointed. We visit Whitby twice a year but wouldn’t be tempted to eat here again

Dining in the restaurant. Firsty we’ve ate several times here before. The food was good quality traditional with a twist. It’s now changed hands by a company who have changed the menu to try and be more upmarket and for the location, the place itself and price point just doesn’t work. The food also wasn’t great. I had Mack pate and it was stone cold just out the fridge with 3 little dehydrated beetroot crisps with 3 bits of dill and 3 slithers of rolled cucumber pickled. It simply didn’t work together nor tasty. The Mrs had Whitby crab and said was ok but not worth the £17 we both paid for a starter. Onto the main and really poor . For £15 I had chicken tikka skewers, which were with a cup of cous cous ( bought in) and some salad covered in oil and vinegar. It was simply boring eating with little flavour. The quality of the meal did not warrant the hefty £15 . I don’t mind paying any prices aa we eat out at some amazing places but this caught us of aa having changed hands and sadly it’s for the worst. In all the bill came to £53 and I think at £40 max would of been right . The chefs simply got the menu wrong as it’s more limited and he’s clearly trying to put out a quality menu at higher prices. In its location it simply won’t work and can see this business declining . What was a great place to eat with previous owners has now turned a disappointing place to eat. Sadly we won’t be returning based on quality, choice of foods and price

We have been to The Stables many times in the past and have always enjoyed excellent food and service. We knew that new owners had taken over so thought we'd give it a try. What an extremely disappointing visit. On arrival they could not find our booking, but after showing proof of my call ( unfortunately now i may add ) agreed to find us a table, the table was situated under an open staircase which was a accident waiting to happen which it did, causing injury when my partner stood up and collided with one of the steps. The only concern shown was the offer of a plaster!! On my way back from the ladies I was horrified to see a kitchen worker trying to open a bag with his teeth...yes we should have cut and run at this point!! The menu was limited in choice and then we waited over 50minutes for our food which on arrival was a disaster - the chips mainly consisted of overdone dark brown bits with only 4 edible ones, the ice cold water did arrive eventually after requesting it with the meal. The meal so bad that we left it uneaten. We did speak to the manager who offered a reduction in the bill and a box to take the uneaten food home...this was hastily declined The experience is one that we will not be repeating...and in hind sight should have left when they advised our booking was not recognised. An utter disappointment and wasted night.

Honestly we only popped in because we were sick of looking for parking in Whitby and the queue for the park & ride was immense. We sat outside in the sunshine enjoying stunning views, the food was exactly what we wanted (fresh and without a delay despite how busy it was), and most importantly we felt welcomed by the lovely staff. Clean facilities are always a bonus and it’s a beautiful building. Really enjoyed our visit and would recommend. Thank you.

We booked a four poster room for our wedding anniversary, it was a lovely relaxing room with a whirlpool bath which made it extra special. As you stepped out there was a a nice little courtyard that was all lite up at night making it look very cosy. The restaurant and bar etc had a stable atmosphere which we loved, especially the old range which had the fire lite at night. Both nights we had great food and found it good value for money, including a hearty breakfast which was eaten overlooking the gardens here the ducks and peacocks wander. The staff and management very friendly and helpful. The manageress went out of her way to tell us it was probably best to use the park and ride which is located just across the road and a very handy way to travel in and out of town. We shall definitely return.

We stayed for just one night & wished it was more. This is in a great location to stay outside of the hustle & bustle if Whitby centre but close enough to jump on the shuttle bus into town. We loved the quirky features of the bar & rooms & the attention to detail really made it stand out. All of the rooms are off a small courtyard which is a lovely setting. We stayed in one of the mezzanine rooms which was lovely with a small sitting area & bathroom downstairs and bedroom up above on the mezzanine. Tea & coffee making facilities were available in the room. The room was lovely & clean and we both slept like logs. We had a wander round the grounds and this is in a lovely setting with plenty of wildlife. Breakfast was 5 star. Tea/coffee & fruit salad was served along with a choice from the hot menu. The quality of the food was excellent. We loved this place & would definitely return

My friend from the USA and I visited The Stables today for the first time and the whole experience was just awful and very unwelcoming. From the minute we stepped through the door and was kept waiting while two members of staff continued their conversation, clearly seeing us standing there through to several main food dishes on the menu not available, lack of communication between serving staff and the chef clearly apparent. Our fountain Pepsi drinks, not served out of Pepsi bottles or cans had already been served first and after us taking a few sips of drink we decided that we would not eat there and leave. I thought it only proper and correct to ask for the bill of our drinks and was subsequently charged 7 pounds for both drinks, with not so much as a sorry or even a goodbye from the member of staff that served us. Very disappointed and will never visit this establishment again.

I’m Whitby born and bred. Hubbie and myself got married at the stables 11 years ago and the place was simply amazing when the original owners had it. Now it’s been been sold and taken over by a new company it’s just not the same… Staff are great but the food is awful. We went last night Wednesday 25th Aug 2021 and was a party of 6. Menu very limited… Chicken curry sauce you would be better using a straw as it was so watery and counted only 3 pieces of chicken… There was more fat on the gammon than there was meat…. Scampi is advertised as Whitby Scampi (it wasn’t, just cheap frozen c**p….) My friend and myself played it safe and went for the prawn salad with a side of chips only because the menu is so poor… As for deserts the menu was very poor hence 2 out of our party didn’t order desert…. From being seated it took 20 minutes to take our drinks order… from our FIRST drinks order it took 1hr and 15mins for our mains, by that time we were onto our 2nd drinks cos it took so long (thank god we didn’t order starters)…. Sorry but we won’t be coming again AND for the bill of just over £180 for poor food then no we won’t be back …. You really do need to sort out your menu and give your guests/customers more choice AND buy local produce not frozen foods.

We went for a run out to Whitby from Scarborough today and decided to visit The Stables for lunch. Before Covid we had visited on various occasions and enjoyed the food. Today, it was a very different experience. My husband had fish and chips with mushy peas. The peas were inedible. Dried up and tasteless. My mackerel pate did not have a strong mackerel flavour and our friends who had the meat pie said the shirt crust pastry was soft. So all in all we were not impressed. We were offered one free coffee for the inedible mushy peas but we won’t be recommending this place to other friends at this point in time. Shame as it has a lovely setting.

Dreadful meal one of the worst I have ever had. We ordered a ham pizza and chicken parmesan. The chicken, what there was of it, was hidden under an enormous mound of bechamel sauce and virtually inedible. The meat(?) on the pizza was lumps of very chewy ham. When asked if we enjoyed the meal wwew were told we should have asked for the children's menu for smaller sizes! Also that they were reviewing the menu shortly. I would have thought thy maybe should be reviewing the chef.

Taking advantage of the 'Eat Out To Help Out' scheme, we chose The Stables for a holiday dinner. The restaurant was close to Whitby and dog-friendly. Although they only had space later in the evening to eat, we were booking late and it showed how popular the restaurant was! Great service from the staff, accommodating special requests from a dairy intolerant diner. The food portions were a good size and the food was really tasty! A lot of Fish and Chips disappeared and their Steak and Ale Pie was a good'un. We appreciated the rustic environment with plenty of exposed wood! We'd recommend to couples or bigger groups for sure!

Called here for our special anniversary meal as we had been before. We ordered crispy potato skins which were not crispy. My wife got steak and ale pie and i got cod and chips. Pastry on the pie was rock hard and a piece of bone was found in the pie which was very sharp and stuck in my wifes gum. She then left over two thirds of her meal My batter on the fish was soggy on the inside and soaked in oil. When asked if all was ok by the staff we complained only to be told im really sorry then took the plates away and returned to see if wanted the bill. Overall a very poor experience and spoiled what should have been a great day. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone now and i will also not return ever.
