Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We’ve been to Whitby a few times now but never been to Trenchers. Usually there’s too much of a queue. We’re so glad we settled on it this time. The food was great. We were served by Karen D who was very helpful & friendly....I asked about the size of a small cod & chips which after her recommendation was spot on for me. She even came back to ask me if the size was enough, There were plenty of chips too!! We’ll definitely be returning on our next trip.More

Always go to this take away chippy had a visit on Wednesday not a problem food bang on. Visited Friday totally different we waited 25 mins for 2 x fish and chips and scampi and chips 2 sausage and a fish cake when the order...arrived I asked can I not have a bag as I had a little dog with me . The answer no we not got any. OK so after checking the order I found no fish cake when asking the tall young lad where it was he said obviously we must of forgotten to do it . When the fryer asked what's up I told him he said I was never asked to do one . On checking the pad he had written down the fish cake but never told the fryer. So a argument started the young lad then used we are busy can't you see attitude so another 10 mins just to get him to reverse the payment back onto my bank card as I'm not waiting another 15mins for the fish cake. Ps it wasn't that busy 7pm at night. Maybe have a word with the lad about his attitude as plenty of other chippy in whitby.More

A great place to eat with a wide menu. Staff are very cheerful and keen to help- a great credit to the company.Booking helps but we joined a queue on Saturday night of about ten people but were not kept waiting long - even given...a menu to look through as we waited( a sign of a caring business.) You can have a starter as main course and pudding if you like . Seating is modern and very well arranged and thoughtfully planned so you are not right next to anyone else. We ate at other restaurants over three days but would rate this the best .More

Fantastic fresh quality food. The crab starter was delicious.Various fish on offer in 3 different sizes. It's beautifully fresh. The scampi was big and very big portion size.Chips are great too.The staff are amazing and very tentative.I brought to the attention of the manager that we had...a wait on our means,he rectified that straight away and give us a free desert of our choice. Now that is what you call proper hospitality.More

We had chosen this restaurant while staying in the area for a couple of days, as it had such good reviews. On a horribly wet cold night, we had a lovely warm welcome from the friendly helpful staff, and the service was swift but not...intrusive or rushing you. We had a drink while deciding, I had halloumi fries followed by scampi & chips, husband had prawn cocktail followed by large cod and chips. The portions were quite big, I could not finish my main course :( Husband managed a dessert of Amaretti sundae (not sure how he managed it as that was huge!). The halloumi I particularly enjoyed with the chilli jam, and husband said his prawn cocktail was better than many he'd had in top five star hotels. The food was hot and tasty and we would definitely recommend this place.More

There are loads of fish and chip places in Whitby to choose from, we decided to go to Trenchers 🥰 What a lovely, immaculate and friendly establishment it is. We were served by Karen who was a wonderful waitress, she was chatty and efficient 😎...We both ordered cod, chips and mushy peas.... The fish was perfect, the peas were tasty and just amazing food. We would recommend Trenchers for a lovely meal.More

So we're up in whitby for two days, and you cannot not go to a seaside resort, without resorting to traditional fish and chips can you. Well that's what we went for. But, which one,?! There's two that sprung up, when we looked it up,...both seemed to get fairly good reviews, so we decided we would do both, on separate days. Arrived, and we were seated, staff were friendly enough, we settled on large fish and chips, and a ice cream sundae to finish off. And coffee, teas. Wasn't far off £80. I guess there is a price to be paid when your seated as always in restaurants. The fish and chips arrived, honestly for near enough twenty quid, I was a little disappointed. The fish was okay, wasn't the biggest I've encounted , but where were the chips,!? Blimey I know spuds are expensive, but this portion, was dismal. Now, no compliants, on how it was cooked, fish was nice, the small amount of chips, were perfect. Enjoyed the sundae. Overall it was nice. Just felt for the price, it wasn't the best of value. Would I return yes, but maybe a takeaway in future,More

First visit to Trenchers, excellent fish and chips, freshly cooked, lovely staff and very well appointed restaurant. Toilets are on the second floor but there’s a lift so good for disabled access. Spotlessly clean and even baby changing facilities in the men’s toilets Will definitely...return on next visit to WhitbyMore

Decided to visit trenchers whilst in Whitby to sample their famous fish and chips. Seated quickly and seen to by very efficient service. Ordered a regular sized haddock which came with chips and tartre sauce priced at a whopping £16.50. Food arrived and served with...a mediocre sized fish and a small portion of chips. Utterly massive disappointment of a meal from a restaurant living off its name shameful for this day and age, only gave it a 3 due to the staff.More

Excellent food, great service from Christine who served us. Good sized portions and good prices. We liked it so much we visited twice and on both occasions the food and service was excellent. I would recommend this establishment highly.

We were on holiday in Whitby. Having just arrived we set out looking for something to eat. We walked past Trenchers and it looked so inviting we went in. We were seated at a beautiful marble table. I had fish and chips and my husband...had battered sausages and chips. Both absolutely delicious. I had ginger and lemon cheesecake for dessert and my husband had knickerbocker glory, amazing. We then decided to visit again, this time knowing the puddings were quite large I opted for a prawn cocktail starter as a main and my husband had fish and chips, we followed this with a knickerbocker glory for him and I had a lemon posset. Absolutely delicious. Very reasonably priced. Both visits we were served by Christine, a great waitress, very attentive, friendly and nothing was too much trouble.More
