Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Came here on the off chance, we were pleasantly surprised! Limited menu but the food was excellent, reasonably priced and very good service. Would definitely recommend a visit.

We found this place by chance as we were staying round the corner for a couple of nights. It doesn’t look anything special from the outside, but as soon as we entered the staff were helpful and polite, we were seated quickly and the dining...area was lovely. Great menu and excellent selection of beers. We all had different things. I had the pie of the day which was epic. My wife had the belly pork which looked amazing too. We’re heading back tonight as we didn’t spot anywhere else nearby that looked as good.More

For years we have been coming to York at Easter and passed over the Winning Post in favour of pubs in the town. However finding our usual haunts were getting very expensive I booked a table for Easter Sunday dinner and was not dissapointed. The...place was really busy but a very pleasant young lady got our table ready early. We enjoyed really tender roast beef, thickly cut, with very nice selection of veg, roasties and Yorkshire pudding. Nice generous portion of delicous Tart Tatin with custard and ice cream to follow. Food quality excellent but really enhanced by a couple of pints of Timothy Taylor Landlord, why cannot all beer be this good?More

This pub is probably better decorated/refurbished inside than you suspect it might be from the outside. Good drinks selection too. Its quite sizeable and spread out so maybe not a buzzing atmosphere (may be different on race day?). Stopped by for Sunday lunch - didn't...look like you'd need to reserve unless you are in a larger group. Quality of the roasts were good, with beef, chicken breast on the bone and a veggie option (in this case mushroom and leek nut wellington). Large Yorkshire puddings too. They also tolerated our various questions and requests well! Kids menu has a decent selection. We enjoyed the deserts as well - the black forest gateaux sundae with cherry swirl ice cream was a good one. Would come back again.More

Stumbled across the Winning Post while staying in York. What abgem of a place. Friendly staff, friendly locals and great food. The beer is also great. We had dinner here a couple of nights. The 'Pie of the day' which was Chicken, Chorizo and jalapeno...was fantastic, definitely the best pie I have had in a a long time. Just a nice place to eat with good beer!!!More

The food and service were very good. My misgiving is that the decor is basic and a bit spartan. It was also a bit cold even though clearly the heating was on. The place could be greatly improved by making it a more cosy and...attractive environment.More

When searching for a dog friendly pub to grab some lunch we came across this gem. Even though we arrived just as the kitchen was closing we were welcomed with nothing but amazing service. The dog were given treats and water. And all 9 of...us had some of the best food we'd eaten in a very long time. I personally had the chicken burger which was fantastic, but had food envy over every other plate. I can not recommend this pub highly enough and look forward to a return in the future.More

Absolutely incredible meal that everyone of our party enjoyed. We had a great table in the restaurant and we could see the food being prepared in the open Kitchen. Glad to see the menu the menu wasn’t massive but what was on it was exceptional....Every main course was amazing , the staff were superb and all in all a fab experience. The communication before the booking was excellent as well. Saying we were in a Friday. Night as well as a bar full of race course visitors the staff did brilliant. We ate in town on Saturday and Sunday night at two different restaurants as they were booked before our visit but they were no where as good as this place. Credit to all the staff …this place is fantastic. Next time we are in York this will be the first place we bookMore
