Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Warm, inviting and larger than expected from the outside. We stopped in for lunch and ordered the festive feast sandwich - roast turkey, stuffing, bacon, sliced roasties and cranberry sauce. Delicious! Great service too - will definitely pop in again.

Visited several times in the past so was delighted when the cafe reopened after lockdown. Having had an effective refurb and implementing distancing measures, the place is still cosy and welcoming, as is the cheerfulness of the owner. The food is always fresh and tasty, excellent quality, made to order on site, at very reasonable prices. A refreshing change to other cafes in the area.

Advertising the best bacon sandwich in York. Well I’ve not tried every bacon sandwich in York, yet! Bacon sandwich was excellent, coffee was among the best I’ve had & it stayed hot also a good sized cup. It seems like a fair few regulars as a bit of chitchat was going on between them. Prices were not silly either. I will be returning!!!

I had purchased a scone elsewhere and dropped in to sit with a coffee, although the place looked a bit of a mess. The pastry case looked as if it had been picked over several days ago, and was all sweets. My coffee arrived quickly and was good, so I began eating my scone. When the barista came out later to serve another table he told me that I wasn’t allowed to eat it - only food purchased on the premises. I certainly wasn’t keeping my table from other more lucrative business, as there were only 3 other customers. This was my only unpleasant and unwelcoming experience during my visit to York - everyone else has been delightful.

This has been our "go to" restaurant for our breakfast in the past when we visit York. We arrived at the cafe for our breakfast on a Thursday about 9.30 and the cafe wasn't open, although the website advises an 8.30 opening time. We previously loved the cafe so we walked about for a while & eventually got in just before 10. The food was good, the coffee only warm when it arrived and the owner polite & friendly. However, the floor hadn't been cleaned from the day before and the walls & doors looked like they could do with a wipe down. The interior had changed from the previous visit so maybe there is a makeover in progress? The door was still closed on Saturday when we passed about 9.10 (opening advertised as 9). Amend the website opening times if you can't make it for the specified times.

This little cafe is literally built into the city wall with part of the ancient foundations exposed in the floor of the cafe. The man who runs it is very pleasant and very helpful. As well as serving the usual range of drinks it has a good range of sandwiches. The goats cheese and beetroot sandwich was excellent.

Just Love this little gem. Alex the owner is friendly, hard working. very accommodating. 3rd year in arow went to Bean and Gone after getting off a coach to visit York Christmas Market . Was greeted with a smile by someone that makes you feel like a friend. I was working as a P/A for someone with disabilities. Nothing was to much trouble. We had a cooked breakfast Same as last two years It was as good as the first 1. Great quality food, beautiful cooked ( was not left disappointed ) with a lovely Latte. We returned again before going back on coach about 3.30 for Coffee and then purchased Cake to take with us on Coach. Bless Alex even remembered my favourite Cake. (I can recommended The millionaires Slice) . Hoping to get there more next year as my 4year old grandson likes trains and it not far from station. Really looking forward to going again soon. Thanks Alex it was Great

We found this lovely little coffee shop close to the city wall and well set out to cater for coffee drinkers but still maintain social distancing. The coffee was certainly as good if not better than the usual chains and the young man behind the counter made us feel welcome. Well worth a visit.

A great little stop on a wall walk. We dropped in for a quick drink earlier in the week and was so impressed by the likeable owner that we stopped back for some lunch today. Delicious sandwiches and all day breakfast. Good coffee. Transparent floor exposes Roman foundations. There is also now a small loo (obviously been added since earlier reviews). The highlight of the place was the owner who could not be more welcoming. We'll come back here on future visits. Support this place, people, and make sure he stays in business!

Great little store. The couple who run it are wonderfully friendly. After a disappointing visit to another coffee establishment the cheerful welcome from the young lady and the exceptional service and local knowledge from the gentleman turned our day around. Would highly recommend.

Just what I wanted 🙂 Visited York today (25/01/2025) rather unplanned, last minute, just for a change of scenery. Was solo so found it difficult in York to find somewhere where I could be comfortable solo, had planned to read my book, however, there was some regulars in there who were talking, and talking to me, but either way, really enjoyed my visit. Didn't want a cafe full of chaos, so this one, suited me absolutely wonderfully. Good was delicious and just right, cup of tea was bang on. *I rarely venture from my house unless it's to go to work, so today was a new one on me, but a very pleasant experience. Completely out of my comfort zone today, but cafe was brilliant, would recommend.

3 adults and 3 kids refused service due to the member of staff not wanting a “large group” in the shop. From entering the shop we were not greeted or shown signs of being accommodated for. We offered to sit in pairs at separate tables, but this was still not okay. Can not comment on the coffee or the food. As a regular visitor to the area I do not intend on returning to cafe!

A quirky little cafe literally in the walls of York . Lovely coffee and an excellent bacon butty ( in a ciabatta roll) , even if slightly burnt at the edges . Cosy too and particularly welcome on a wet winter afternoon . Cheerful service too .

Called here for breakfast after walking the walls so we were hungry. Husband had the sausage ciabatta roll and I had the double egg ciabatta. Beautiful and my eggs were cooked exactly as I requested. The man was lovely, gave us some maps and some general information which was really helpful Really good value , fast and efficient service. Will definitely go back and might even try lunch next time
