We stumbleppadomd on the restaurant on New Years Day while we were on a short break in York. The chalk board outside the restaurant advertised a lunch menu for £7.99 so we decided to give it a try. What a feast we got! The food arrived on a tray that contained a number of small bowls containing a variety of vegetables together with a meat dish of your choice (chicken, lamb), a large bowl of rice, doa and poppadom. The food tasted delicious - spicy but more subtle than your normal indian. The staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The value for money was excellent and we will definately visit again when we return to York.

We booked a table on the day the staff were very hospitable. We arrived and were seated straightaway. The bar staff came over with menus promptly and we had ample time to decide before the staff came back to take a drinks order and give some recommendations. When the drinks arrived the front of house manager came over to take the order and help us through the plentiful menu. After ordering a section of starters and mains for 4 adults and 3 children they started to bring out some of the best Indian food we have ever tasted. The dishes kept coming out with new and interesting flavours in every bite. After an hour of eating some of the best food we've ever had and the kingfisher on tap was great as well we were handed the bill and were surprised at how reasonable it was. After chatting for a few minutes while we paid the bill we all realised this place was a real Jem and we will deffinalty be returning. Everyone loved the food and the team were so friendly. We will be back again to try some more amazing food. We'll worth a trip out to try this fantastic restaurant

Amazing South Indian food! Try this place for some of the best South Indian food in York. Highlights of our meal was the vegetarian Erisseri curry which was simply delicious made with ground coconut and finished with lovely toasted coconut flakes. it just transported us back to South India. Delicious pilau rice and the best paratha bread we've had in a long time. I'd also recommend the samosa chat and the paneer tikka. if you order direct through their website they currently have a 25% discount offered for deliveries and collections. Will definitely try again.

Visited this restaurant with friends a couple of weeks ago and was really impressed with everything. So much so that we returned this week and it was just as good. The menu isn't huge but has something for everyone, and is refreshingly different to your 'standard' Indian restaurant in York. I love fish but it's often hard to get a decent fish curry and I've never seen crab curry on an Indian menu before so I was definitely going to give this a go. If you like crab you must try this, it's fabulous, a dressed crab sat in a thick, gorgeous curry sauce. My partner had the whole stuffed seabass which was also cooked perfectly. We had the most expensive starters and mains, we shared rice and a naan, and with a couple of beers the bill came to £65 for the two of us, which we thought was great for the quality and quantity of food we had. Lovely friendly, helpful staff too and a great atmosphere. One of our favourites now for sure.

We chose this place solely because it got so many positive reviews on trip advisor, so I feel compelled to write about our impression in case anyone else bases their decision on the reviews. I truly don't understand why it gets so many excellent reviews. We have eaten many Indian meals all over the world so we had high hopes for this place based on the reviews. The starters were lacking in flavour and the meats were very dry. Only one of the 4 main courses ordered was just ok, nothing special. The other meals were not that nice. The butter chicken sauce tasted like the flavour of tomato soup and was not very nice. The rice was just plain boiled rice and under seasoned. Plain basmati rice has the potential to be so much more interesting, but they just seem to boil it and serve it completely plain. You can choose a rice with raisins and bits in but it seemed a bit pricey for what it was so we didn't bother. The tandoori oven was apparently broken so we couldn't have the naan bread. We had a chappathi instead...unfortunately this was greasy and bland, and we found a hair in it. The wait time for taking orders and time between starters, clearing plates, main courses etc is quite lengthy. We spent about 1 hour 45 mins in the restaurant and only had 2 courses. The worse aspect for us was the after effects of the meal. All of our party have strong stomachs and eat spiced food on a regular basis. However, almost immediately after our meal we all had bloated and upset stomachs. I can only assume that this is from whatever oils or base sauces are used because all of our party felt the same even though we didn't share any meals (and we were only drinking soft drinks, no alcohol). Sorry to leave such a negative review, but I do feel a bit misguided by the other reviews on here and wish we hadn't eaten at this restaurant. I am giving it 3 out of 5 poorly for the location as it was in a very central area of York, and the staff were also quite nice, but nothing extraordinary. I think 3 out of 5 is quite generous all round.

It's a shame to write a negative review at the moment with hospitality struggling to survive with unknown futures but sadly our visit was really disappointing. The restaurant was almost empty when we entered so obviously felt that service would not be too long. We ordered the snack starters , poppadoms etc which were really overpriced and not that great. Our main courses came nearly an hour later with no communication from the waiting staff and were quite tasteless apart from the masala dosa which was good.

we do appreciate your review and will take it seriously as feedback only helps us to improve and excel.during lockdown we lost half of our best staff as retaining everyone was a hard pill and with freshers around we do value your review about the lack of communication from them , apologies. the snack basket is almost everybody's favourite to go with their drink and is the best seller here. we do use fresh raw plantain for the chips, fresh fermented rice for the crisps, and obviously the cost incurred is huge and we have no plans to bring in cheaper alternative to enhance our business.our cuisine hail from the south coast of India and there is no room for vindaloo, roganjosh , madras either. We always take initiative to make sure all of our guests leave our premises happily and is always keen on checking their tables constantly ensuring the same.,as its quite visible from the other reviewers down here in the same platform. At any point of time if our beloved customers feel the meal is unsatisfying ,we would happily make arrangements for a fresh one instead, coz we never take pride on having money in our pocket from an unhappy customer. well on your next visit hopefully you will have a better experience as our cuisine is always ranked at the top by any food lover and will make sure the food you ordered will be of the usual standards as well. best wishes

We visited York and Kalpakavadi on a busy Saturday night. The restaurant was getting pretty full and we found that to be a promising sign of a decent Indian. Staff were quick to seat us and were very friendly. Drinks and food orders taken and after having had our poppadoms (no choice of how many, just a basket of crushed up ones, probably only two in total.) we were told our mains wouldn’t be too far off... What service, we thought! Instantly, our mains arrived and what a disappointment if not only for the eyes to feast upon - portions were tiny, as if the kitchen had only prepared one small chicken breast per person. Ah, but surely the taste of everything will make up for it? It had to right? It’s “fine dining” Indian style... Nope! Our mains; one Khozi Malli Peralan, one Thalassery Khozi Curry were very underwhelming in both quantity and quality. Both currys were very watery and massively bland - totally devoid of any sort of spicing. The lemon rice, again a tiny portion was only just enough to share. The garlic naan was microscopic. Total bill price was nearly £50 and we were still hungry! We felt it was a joke that an Indian restaurant couldn’t satisfy! Please take all the high reviews with a pinch of salt (or cumin). The restaurant offers each reviewer a free main course in a monthly draw for high reviews on trip advisor.... people will say anything for a freebie. Bland tiny expensive portions but good service. Avoid, unless you can’t actually handle spicing and fancy an “Indian”.

As a local I have been meaning to visit for some time and had great expectations. The restaurant has a pleasant minimalist décor and was fairly busy. I was shown to a table and given a menu which was interesting but limited in scope and my order was taken quite quickly but with little interaction from the waiter. Later I realised there was a second menu available which I hadn't been given. I wasn't offered a drink but expected that order to be taken separately. The staff were running around like headless chickens but did not seem to be achieving much. After about 10 minutes I managed to attract the attention of a waiter and request a beer. He asked what I wanted so asked what they had and was told Kingfisher so made my 'choice'. A further 20 minutes passed with no sign of my beer or poppadum (which were being produced precooked from a drawer in the corner-but not mine). At this point I decided to call it a day and left unnoticed by staff. The food looked good but I didn't get to try it.

I don’t know much about India, so when I saw that the food was from Kerala, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Well, it turns out Kerala food is fresh, very flavoursome, light on oil, and totally delicious. The fresh chutneys, such as the coconut with the dosa (a sort of crepe, but lighter) was wonderful. As were the grilled prawns with coconut. The vegetables were also perfectly cooked, and clearly not cheap. Whilst we were there, a steady stream of tiffin cans went out of the kitchen, presumably takeaways for people who couldn’t get out. If self-isolation means tiffin for supper from here, then I’m all for it! Anyway, the service was very helpful, very friendly and altogether, we had a great meal and a lovely evening.

Called in to Kalpakvadi for lunch today to try it out - so pleased we did! We had the express lunch and we both choose chicken. The meal came in numerous small tins on a tray - chicken curry, two vegetable curries, a side dish, three different chutneys, rice, a dosa and a poppadum. It was absolutely gorgeous and each different dish was equally as good as the other. We were made to feel very welcome and given advice on what the dishes were and which to eat with the dosa. I really couldn't fault it! The restaurant is beautifully done out with lovely lighting and the staff and owners were lovely. I can't wait to go again and will definitely be giving it a go for an evening meal. It's the best Indian meal I've had outside of India by miles.

KalpaKavdi was a nice visit, I invited 16 people from my office and for many it was their first try of south Indian food. I believe all of them really enjoyed the meal and several of them had mentioned that the Naan bread was the best they have ever had. The restaurant is a family run restaurant which I always like, and they are very friendly. I would try the fish curry’s as that is what Kerala is famous for, the also mentioned that they do a lunch box takeaway for £4-£5ish which sounds inviting

2 very fussy Londoners visiting on a random last minute day trip. We had booked an Italian and on route, the aroma hit us. We couldn't resist checking if a table was available. They very kindly squeezed us in. A rule of thumb for us is if the chutneys are good, the food will good. The chutneys was amazing! We had the while you wait nibbles and starters of chilli paneer and samosa chat. My husband ordered a salmon starter. He thought it was great taste but didn't think it was salmon. The chef with the most warming aura and amazing smile came out of the kitchen and apologised that he had been given chicken instead of salmon and handed him the salmon as well on the house. The food couldn't be more perfect! Mains was masala dosa for me. We had cancelled hubby's green peppercorn chicken as was stuffed from the extra starter but chef still sent out a tasting portion. The Keralan paratha was insane! So fluffy and not greasy! We loved the food! We are used to pretty decent choice and standards in London... We are spoilt for choice. This defo is way up there. We never saw everything in York and will defo be back. And will certainly be eating here again! Outstanding.

Ordered takeaway and it arrived very quickly, all the food was warm and they threw in a free pickle tray with popadoms which was a treat! Everything was absolutely delicious, flavourful and fresh, not greasy at all. Our favourite was the mutter paneer. Would definitely recommend.

Looking through the menu was such a pleasure as well as a bit of an education into southern Indian cuisine. We ordered whole sea bass which was stunning , and two vegetarian dishes ( even though not vegetarian ourselves just to try something new ) No regrets , they were both so , so tasty ! The staff were genuinely warm, friendly and cheerful even though the restaurant was extremely busy. We live in York and eat out often ( well we used to before lockdown ! ) We are already looking forward to eating here again.. the Tiffin tasting selection next time we think !

Very friendly greeting. Seated immediately and offered menus. We made our choices 3 starters, prawns, Madras kozhi and Fossgate beef fry - all delicious. We ordered 3 mains, we were recommended the fish curry by the server who said if we didn't like it he would bring our original choice out. We were not disappointed. The duck curry was beautiful, the fish curry was the best we had eaten. We also had the mixed grill which was gorgeous. The garlic naan was light and crisp and my son said it was the best. The service and food was second to none. We will be back!

its our pleasure to have served your family and glad you all enjoyed your meal out here. most of the restaurants here in the country does not do justice to the fish curry and i have seen quite a few people ignoring the sea food curries just coz of this. i really wanted you to know what the actual texture of the fish curry is back in our area which is the south coast of India. Really appreciate you for taking my word and trusting me. Your wonderful comment would only help us gain motivation and excel . look forward to serve you again.
