The only disappointment is we could only pick one main course. They all sounded delicious, opted for the schnitzel and was very impressed. Not the sort of cuisine we normally go for but definitely glad we made the visit, would highly recommend, particularly if Polish cuisine is not something you've tried before!

Four of us had an excellent hearty lunch. The service was very friendly, portion size generous and the cakes were stunning. We were impressed by the Romanian red wine and the modesty of the bill. Highly recommended for an informal lunch. Certainly hope to be back.

Went Saturday lunchtime as group of five. Really warm welcome and nice simple lunch menu. Excellent service and food, as well as great value. <£100 for the five of us. All had hearty main course, drinks (including a nice bottle of merlot) and a cake for pudding. Definitely go back, maybe for dinner sometime.

I would definitely recommend this place, my wife had the pancakes and rated them as the best she's ever had. They also very kindly gave free scrambled eggs on toast for my 2 year old daughter, done as we wanted without salt, this was a nice touch. I'll be visiting again when in York next.

Four of us had a great night here, I had borsch for first time ever and it was lovely, others had scallops for starters - I had rabbit wrapped in pancetta, , others had stew in a loaf, cabbage leaves with fillings, - everyone loved their food - we had a reasonable bottle of Malbec, and finished with vodka -... It is rare these days to find a restaurant where you can hear the people at your table because of loud music or just bad acoustics. Not here: at barbakan you can have conversations over dinner. The service was tip top. The portions incredible: few in our party could finish their main. I had the courgette fritters for starters and... More

Small but unnmissable. The staff, Anna and her team, are delightful - helpful, attentive and find time to chat. The food is traditional Polish with a light touch - the bigos, served traditionally in bread and the goulash pancakes are particularly good, as are the various home-made cakes. Worth booking as it's very popular with locals - and certainly worth... More

Escaped the horrendous hotel I'd booked looking for some decent breakfast and seriously lucked out by wandering in here about twenty yards along the street. Welcoming, cosy place, nice decor, comfortable seats in the window, friendly service, nice coffee and fantastic food. I had a 'Duck Rumor' which was a duck egg baked with salmon, garlic, dill, creme fraiche and... More
