Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I made the worst decision to buy a peri chicken burger from this place. The first bite was fairly tender until I got to the middle part of the burger, and this was when the chicken went from being reasonably tender to a non-tender burger...with a firm crunch. I immediately realised that the burger had not been cooked long enough. I called the restaurant to complain, and the owner didn’t seem too bothered, and he asked me to bring the food back for another burger. I immediately rejected this as there was no way I would eat again from this restaurant. The quality of this place has gone down the hill from my first visit in February 2020, when they had first opened. I am extremely disappointed and hope they take something from this feedback and make changes to the food quality. Avoid this place otherwise you could get very sick from eating their food.More

In a quaint English city of York, full of quite some serious history, my brother took me to dinner at “Chutni”, a restaurant serving food of Afghan Cuisine and that from northwestern provinces of Indian peninsula primarily. The food that came to our table could...be best described as a carnival for flavors on a dinner plate. It was an utterly satisfying meal. The restaurant is currently located near York University area. It’s worth giving a try. For me it’s another reason to return to York.More

This is definitely above the level of your regular subcontinental takeaway. There's some chicken and chip sort of options on the menu strangely, but we stuck to the subcontinental food, and whilst the choices are limited everything we had was very good. On the chicken...karahi, just be aware that the chicken is very boney, appreciate that's good for flavour in curries, but some folks don't like picking through bones.More

Food and service were both excellent. Really interesting flavours which I haven’t come across yet in York. A great alternative if you fancy a curry with a twist.

Our first visit to this lovely restaurant. Free parking directly outside and a lovely ambience inside the restaurant itself. With 3 children to please, we initially stepped in just to check the menu. The delicious aroma as soon as we opened the door then made...it impossible to leave! Happily, the food was every bit as good as the aroma promised. The children chose from a kids’ menu of crowd pleasers-good portion sizes of mildly spiced chicken burgers/wraps with fresh salad dressings and fries, again with a choice of spicing. Adults indulged in a delicious lamb curry and a smoked aubergine dish accompanied by fresh hot naan and rice. The wine accompaniment was also excellent. Unlike many other family dining experiences, this meal pleased adults and children alike, catering for my fussy eaters whilst also giving my husband and I the chance to enjoy some truly wonderful cuisine, all spiced exactly as requested, and brought to us by some lovely staff who provided great service. A fantastic dining experience all round-we’ll definitely be back!More

This restaurant has a short, but varried menu, which offers sublime flavours of the north west indian continent. In addition some novel burger and fries options are available. This makes it perfect for youngsters who have yet to develop a palette for curries. And, those...curries are outstanding, freshly prepared and spiced to order. I've lived in york for 17 years and have never had better.More

By far the best food I have ever eaten. Me & my husband came here for our one year anniversary and the food was beyond amazing. It was all packed with exciting flavour and was 100% authentic to the regions the food came from, the...portions were more than ample but we could have eaten this meal all over again. The staff were lovely and really knowledgable about the food and the culture of the regions the food came from. Unpromising location and facade but magnificently tasty food - shared Ami's kadoo and Smokey aubergine (both veggie). With peri-peri rice. All fantastic. Next time I'd have both at the Yorkshire kick heat because we tried the aubergine at the next spice level up and felt...that (for our tastes, and we like a reasonable amount of spice) it detracted from the flavour. It's not a quick meal because, as they warn you, the food is cooked from scratch. The owner was very friendly and happy to tell us about the history of the place (setting up just pre-Covid - ouch). This is the only Asian eaterie in York I would be happy to take my Asian daughter-in-law to.More

I reviewed Chutni about a year ago, but since then have been back a few times and twice in the last couple of weeks. So, it seemed like a good moment to update. Chutni is just a great restaurant. The menu is short, but everything...is cooked to order (allowing you to choose your level of heat), and tastes tremendous. The Smokey Aubergine has a depth of flavour that is quite incredible. And if you think nothing much can be done with the humble chickpea, try their Channa Masala and it will take your breath away. I'm a fairly avid meat eater, but those two dishes are always the first things we order. Last time we completed the order with the Chicken Malai Handi, which is a delicious yoghurt marinated lightly spiced dish. Portions are not huge, but we like that. Those three dishes plus naan and one rice more than fed three of us. There are two beers on tap - a pilsner and a pale ale - and wine by the glass or the bottle. The wine selection is limited but well chosen (we had a lovely Grüner Veltliner). Front of house is great. If several parties come in at the same time, things can take a little while, but you can see that everyone is busy and that's a price well worth paying for food that is cooked when, and only when, you order it. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and children are definitely welcome (if they, or anyone else in your party, have different food tastes, they also do peri-peri chicken, chips, and a chicken burger). Prices range from about £7 for the peri-peri chicken to around £10-£15 for other main courses. You won't regret it (and, if we're anything to go by, you will be back).More
