This is a lovely, homely place to have a bite to eat and watch the world go by. Lots of outside seating, but only few tables inside due to covid restrictions. I had tea and cream scones which tasted homemade and delicious - best priced I've come across in York. You're made to feel so welcome and relaxed here. Staff are wonderful, friendly and the service excellent.

This is always a busy spot with people jostling for a window seat overlooking the west door of the minster. Whilst the menu is small, there is a great range of dishes to suit all tastes. You can depend on the food being freshly prepared and it's mostly homemade using the best of local ingredients. I had the ham hock today which was moist, full of flavour, and left me wanting a smidgen more! Staff are attentive and friendly and although it's busy. Clearly there are daily regular customers who are warmly greeted by staff, but as a visitor you are sure of equal attention. Breakfast or lunch, the choice is yours. I expect that like me, you won't be disappointed! Looking forward to my next visit.

Visited today, 2 adults and 2 kids. Completely accommodating, gave us an indoor table as it was really hot outside, lovely and cool inside. Me and the hubby had the Full Yorkshire breakfast, so tasty and not at all greasy and huge, doorstep slices of buttered toast, whilst my kids had crumpets and cakes which they wolfed down. Can't rate them highly enough for a brunch time meal, set us up for the day x

We were due to visit the Treasurers House and had some time to spare so popped into Bennet's for a much-needed cuppa. We found the customer service a bit lacking if we're honest, quite stand-offish young lads who didn't really engage with the customers and were quite slow with their service, we waited quite a long time for our pot of tea despite the place not being overly busy at the time. That said the tea when it came was excellent, a generous pot piping hot with a secondary pot of hot water to top up and an ample jug of fresh milk. Spotlessly clean cups. Good quality tea. We had three cups each from the serving and then a pleasant surprise when we paid and found that the value for money was far better than other places we had visited, just short of six pounds.

We had lunch here twice during a short stay in York and found it to be an excellent spot to enjoy good food and soak up the atmosphere around. The location is superb .. just across the road from York Minster. The staff are all very friendly and we found the homemade food to be good and a decent price ... especially when you think of the location. We would recommend this place and will definitely return when we next visit York. Thank you

Having read reviews thought this would be a perfect pitstop on tour of York. Wrong, wrong, wrong, chimed the warning bells of York Minster. Scone had been over warmed in the oven all day. By the time it was served up on my plate it was hard and biscuity crumble and over dry. Staff were rude. Menu is very limited, toasties, cake and allegedly scones. Would not recommend.

Stopped here for lunch on a baking hot day - perfect choice! Helpful friendly staff and a great view for people-watching around the minster itself. The food was absolutely delicious (I definitely recommend the goats cheese salad),and was served with a smile☺️. Thankyou!

I visited with my two children meeting family who travelled from Newcastle. My family had to queue 40 mins to get in and the staff weren’t happy to give them a table for 4 when there was just them two, but we arrived 5 mins after and were greeted by frosty staff, who looked at me like I was an inconvenience as I had my pram and struggled through the door. I asked for a high chair and they DONT have any. My son sat down and was excited to see his great uncle and started singing jingle bells, before I could get the baby out the pram and take my coat off the older man that worked there stormed over and snatched the menu out my sons hand and walked away. He proceeded to stand with a younger staff member and stare at me from near the kitchen, they didn’t tell me if there was a problem but they glared at us and made me feel intimidated. They wouldn’t serve us and sent the lady over instead who moved my pram sideways so I couldn’t sit the baby in that either. We ordered and because I had to hold the baby on my knee I couldn’t have a hot drink so was charged £2.99 for a small glass of orange juice, My relatives ordered cheese sandwiches which came as a bleached white sandwich with cheese and pickle with they had to scrape off. A lady who left said that they should have sat us near the back because I had two children, I don’t understand why people are so unfriendly to the children. The sandwich’s juice and tea cost £34 well over priced and service was still shocking. They couldn’t wait to get rid of us even though the children sat nicely and weren’t too noisy. It’s disgusting! No Christmas spirit just Frost and cold reception. Horrible people and I intend to let everyone know it!

Dear Alison, Unfortunately, I feel it is necessary to respond to this review. On Saturday, 3rd December, when you visited Bennett’s, the city centre of York was experiencing a lot of visitors. So many visitors that the City Council used the information boards on the outskirts to warn visitors about how crowded the city centre was. For much of the day many of our customers had to wait for a long time for a table to become available. I imagine that to have been the case in nearly all the hospitality outlets in the centre throughout the day. These delays were made known to people when they entered Bennett’s to allow them the opportunity to try elsewhere if they wished. You state that your two relatives queued for 40 minutes before they were offered a table, they had indeed said that you would be a party of five, however given that only two of the party had arrived after 40 minutes it does not seem unreasonable to question them about how long it would be before the remaining three arrived. As I stated many other of our customers were having to wait for long periods as well and given that we had to put two tables together to cater for five, I did not want an empty table being held if the remaining three people were going to be a long time. Given the use of the upper case letters in “DON’T” have a high chair, it is obviously an important requirement in your needs, therefore it is a pity that your relatives did not bother to ask about the availability of a high chair at the start of their 40 minute wait. We could have told them then and the subsequent disappointment would have been avoided as they could have gone and queued elsewhere. The problem with the pram was because you left it in the way of staff and customers trying to move about an already crowded space, and that was why you were asked to move it. Regarding your son’s singing of jingle bells, it was drawn to my attention by a twenty year old male student who works for me that the little boy had rolled up a menu and appeared to be sticking his tongue in it, and blowing it like a trumpet. Even as a male student he thought it was inappropriate behaviour. We watched for a while on the assumption that at some point one of the adults present would ask him to stop. I do not think that the subsequent customers who read that menu would want to come into contact with your child’s saliva. There are something like 1 million cases of Covid in the country and sadly an unusual prevalence of Strep A cases in children at the moment with tragic results for some families. Cross contamination off a laminated menu is far from impossible, I’m not sure that allowing your child to put menus, which have been handled by strangers, in his mouth is a great idea at anytime. His great uncle seemed happy to encourage your son in his rendition and so I calmly walked across and took the menu from the little boy. I did not storm over, and as you had your back to me I doubt that you could know whether I had stormed, sauntered or just calmly walked. I then took the menu, not snatched it and disinfected it. I’m very sorry if you felt intimidated, there was no intention to do so and I do not think we stared at you, again given that you had your back to us I do not know how you would know whether we were staring or not, we do stand behind the display fridge as that is the natural location to see the room and door to see if anyone needs attention. We did not tell you there was a problem because there wasn’t one. The lady came to serve you because that was her job, she served most people that day not just you. I was making the coffees and teas, once the little boy was no longer playing the menu trumpet I was unaware of any problems and was busy enough without having time to focus on your table. In relation to the orange juice, it is actually quite a large measure for pure orange juice and does not cost £2.99. The cheese sandwiches are described on the menu as cheese and pickle and normally when someone prefers to not have the pickle they tell us at the time of ordering. You were offered a choice of white or granary bread verbally as well as written on the menu again. You chose white bread, however if it was too bleached white for your taste perhaps you could take that up with Derek Warburton as it’s Warburton’s Farmhouse that we use. After serving about 1 million customers I think you are the first to complain about the colour of the bread. Regarding sitting you near the back, you would have had to wait even longer for a suitable table to be available because none were available at the time when we seated you and your initial complaint seemed to be that you had already had to wait too long. I agree that sandwiches, juice and tea costing £34 is expensive, unfortunately so is VAT, rent, rates, wages, energy costs and a load of other costs attached to the business. I can eat for a fraction of that at home when none of those overheads are involved. Surprisingly, a number of customers have recently said how reasonable our prices are. The children did indeed sit nicely after the menu had been taken away and none of you were any problem, I do not think we rushed you away and we really were not aware that there was a problem nor did we have any thoughts about wanting to get rid of you. We were engaged in trying to ensure people had as good a time as possible when they were with us on an exceptionally busy day. In your case we failed and I am sorry about that. It’s unfortunate that you did not mention any of this at the time but I can understand it if you felt so intimidated and of course given the strength of your feelings I can understand that you will let everyone know. Kind regards, Mike Fisher (Proprietor)

This café is well located with a good view of York Minster. It has a pleasant interior which was nice and warm on a cold day. There is table service and we enjoyed two cappuccinos which were reasonably priced at £5.40.

Great service pleasant surroundings overlooking the minster; we were lucky enough to eat out side in lovely 28 degree sun with a slight breeze; nice settings for afternoon lunch and coffee. Purchased the mocha; was so nice ordered another. Had food wise the tuna melt; lovely chucks of fresh tuna on a light crisp bun; salad dressing was perfect and suspect not out of a bottle! Would recommend and come again

My friend and I called in for lunch. I ordered a cheese and pickle sandwich and a pot of peppermint tea. I got a toastie which I didn't want, but as it was there decided to get on with it. It was very thin bread, cheese like rubber and if there was any pickle I didn't see it. Totally tasteless served with some leaves and salad bits smothered in dressing that was far too strong and vinigary. That with a pot of tea was £10.40, and when paying by card I was offered the choice of adding a tip. As the waitress was very offhand I declined. Won't bother them again, far nicer and tastier places in York. It's not about the cost but the experience.

A lovely friendly place with surprisingly quick service. My friend had the york ham on granary which came with a tasty side salad, I had the mushroom soup which comes with chunks of granary bread. It was the nicest mushroom soup I’ve tasted in years! Just what I needed to warm up on a cold, wet day.

Great position, busy cafe but staff need training in hospitality. We wanted a table for four so were told to wait outside which we did only to find people being allowed in in front of us. We went inside and asked for two tables to be pushed together - you would have thought this to be unreasonable of us as from then on the two male members of staff were almost unpleasant. One ignored us completely, a girl was sent to take our order and the other, younger, male served us most reluctantly. Food ok but nothing special. Definitely a course in basic courtesy required here. Customer relations totally and sadly lacking. Such a contrast to other places un the area where the service was always with a smile. Really wished we had tried elsewhere.

Stopped for a coffee en route to walk around the city walls. Oat milk latte was lovely, partner had a coffee, it was served in a smallish cup and really not much more than half full. Milk was served separately so perhaps that explains it. No vegan options in the cakes which surprised me as I don't think I've ever seen so much choice for vegans as I have done in York. Looking at the reviews this place is obviously popular and succeeding at what it does so perhaps there is not a feeling that vegans need to be catered for...but even just one option would be nice!! I can only assume the oat milk option is due to so many people being 'dairy free'. Great setting, enjoyed sitting in the sun people watching!
