L'osteria Italiana presents a varied dining experience, where the atmosphere divides opinion; it's described as either beautifully festive or lacking in character. The service also receives mixed reviews, with some guests enjoying impeccable hospitality, while others encounter slower, less attentive interactions. When it comes to value, it's a toss-up between reasonable prices for generous portions and sentiments of overpriced, underwhelming fare. As for the food, it ranges from being celebrated for its freshness and authenticity to being critiqued for occasional dryness and blandness.

I had such a wonderful experience with this restaurant! I booked this for a formal dinner for my university society and Maria was so so accommodating throughout the whole process, even when we had over 40 guests. The food was gorgeous and very reasonably priced (we ate off of the Christmas set menu) and the atmosphere was so gorgeous and incredibly festive. A wonderful night for all of us, and we cannot thank Maria, Samantha and the rest of the team enough for making it all possible. Thank you so much! Would definitely recommend (especially the pork belly and the beef cheek - they were incredible)

We visited on a Saturday evening, we ate from the set menu which we had not seen because it was at the back of the main menu. We were surprised that it was on offer on a Saturday evening, it was really good value. The starters were pate and garlic mushrooms both served with French bread with balsamic glaze and side salad both ample servings and delicious. Mains were beef cheeks with a beautiful sauce, tiny heritage veg and crushed potatoes it was gorgeous, pork with a cider and sage sauce served with crushed potatoes and spinach it was delicious. Clean plates all round. The servings were ample and presented beautifully we did not order desert because we were too full. We had a nice rose wine with the meal and my husband had a glass of red to round his meal off. The whole bill was £61.00 amazing for the quality of food we had . We will be back when we are in York again. The service was attentive but not overbearing the staff were very pleasant.

This place is honestly one of best resturants we have ever had the plesure of going to, they managed to acomdate a table of 10 with less than 24 hours notice, the service was impecable and the food was beyond incredable, I can not praise this place to the review it is worth. 10 of us there for 2 rounds of drinks, starters, mains and desserts and all in all came to just over £500 which is £50 a head for a full 3 course, extremely varied menu and amazing customer service from everyone there. Can not wait to visit here again

We eat in lots of restaurants so feel we are a good judge of what is good and what isn’t, I’m sorry to say this was the worst meal we’ve had for a long, long time, not only that but the service was dire😩 We arrived 15 minutes early to a very brusk unwelcoming member of staff, no smiles no greeting only under her breath ‘early ‘ We were shown to our table in a very brightly lit room, lacking in atmosphere and ambience. Before we had the chance to sit down we were told what wasn’t available on the menu. We waited ages for a waiter( visibly chewing something as he approached us)to ask us what drinks we would like. We ordered our food at the same time as it was obvious the service was going to be bad, lots of other tables waiting for their food. We shared a Burrata, tomato starter, no side plates, we did mention that we were going to share it, so we had to eat from the same plate. I ordered the Aubergine Malanzane, layers of aubergine tomatoes with cheesy sauce, it was the most unappetising dish I have ever seen, no sign of any cheese just big pieces of grey looking Aubergine smothered it what tasted like a shop bought Passat a from a jar, no flavour whatsoever. I had to ask for Parmesan to try and give it at least some flavour. My partner ordered a prawn pasta dish, huge portion but again no flavour, he left it barely untouched, to which he received an annoyed look and gesture from the same lady who didn’t greet us when we arrived. We could hear several grumbles from other diners, one lady having Parmesan flicked into her eye from an over zealous waitress! We were never asked if we wanted a dessert or ‘was everything okay’ nothing so we left. Never to return. Very poor in our opinion.

We have been to this location on couple of occasions when it was owned by previous proprietors and enjoyed a pleasant experience. So, knowing this restaurant has now been an Italian for a while we thought we would give this a try. It began when we entered the restaurant for our reserved booking on New Year's eve at 6pm. We were greeted by a lady that said, “give me a minute as we have overbooked, and I need to juggle the tables a little”. We were then seated, and our starter and drinks arrived at the same time (no time to have a few minutes to enjoy or drink). I looked over to the table in front of me who were questioning that they had not received the bottle of wine they had ordered, and they had already received their starters. They did eventually get their wine order only to be followed another waiter arriving with another bottle and not realising they already had it (they did not seem to know what each other were doing). They were lucky because the couple sat at the table next to us did not receive their drinks until after they had finished their starters! Fair play, the food we ordered was lovely compliments to the chef. My husband ordered chicken with Parma ham for this main course only to find that when he received it there was no ham. He questioned this and realised the table behind us had ordered the same dish only without the ham so there was a table mix up. The couple behind us had arrived just before us yet we received our food first and my husband had started eating his, so the dishes could not be swapped. Not wanting to make a fuss my husband said he would eat his without ham. These things happen but I was beginning to think why on earth have we chosen this place for a relaxing meal for 2 on New Year's eve. The lady who seemed to be the senior waitress was zooming around. To be fair to her she was trying to please guests and ensure people were not waiting but it was all a bit unnerving. And despite the mention of being over booked, the restaurant was only around 70% full. When our drinks order was taken, we also asked for a jug of tap water. This was not delivered so when the plates for our starters were removed, we politely reminded the waiter about our water. Suffice to say, it never arrived, and we are still waiting for it. The lady waiter was on the way to another table with a bottle of wine in her hand and stopped at our table to ask if everything was OK and I said could we please have the bill. She said yes, and proceeded to take the bottle of wine to another table. After waiting for our bill 20 mins, I said to my husband we have felt rushed throughout our meal and yet here we are waiting to pay the bill. We got up and went to the lady at the till and again explained that we have been waiting so long to receive the bill. She apologised and gave us the bill which was wrong and had to be amended. What can I say ........I realise NYE can be a busy evening but don't book too many people in or employ more staff. As a matter of fact, I would not say this restaurant was particularly busy at the time we had booked for so the poor service we received was disappointing from that point of view. Overall, it was a disappointing evening. We shan’t go back. There are many other places and lots of choice in York to try first.

We visited here Christmas Eve .. I chose it because it was new and I’ve eaten here a few times when it was 31 Castlegate , always having a decent meal and enjoying the historic Georgian architecture of the main room . Now an Italian , we hoped for great things but it was generally very disappointing. The pizza we tried was created on a cardboard texture hard base .. the kind you’d buy on the cheapest of supermarket pizza .. If you are an Italian restaurant and serve pizza , the very least you need to do is make or buy in a decent dough to make a good platform for the product as there are now some nice pizza places in York .. Cresci probably the best .. The toppings on the other hand were absolutely fine , which made the cost saving of a cheap generic base such a waste , because it spoiled the whole product . They have an Amarone wine on the menu for around £25 .. but it’s a menu misprint , which happens , but instead of reprinting the menu , the staff have to say the product is unavailable to anyone who realises that it is ..because serving it would greatly reduce their margin .. I get that .. but just print some new menus and put it up to £50 .. don’t tease customers with it .. It’s all a bit Mickey Mouse .. Right now , the food is poor , there is no ambiance to the room but it is still in a lovely building ..so if they roll their sleeves up , and serve nice Italian food it could be a great spot .. currently though it isn’t .. I will keep monitoring reviews and if anyone who’s eaten in a lot of places and tried great food reckons they’ve changed and improved , we’ll try again ..but it will take a few months and the management will have to recognise what’s needed …

The restaurant lacks atmosphere or character, it was like sitting in an old fashioned conference room, nothing Italian . It was very plain with just a small handful of pictures on the wall. The mushroom starter was a bowl of cream & there were so little mushrooms in it had to try and "fish "them out! The main course was a good portion & nice food. The staff was either not interested/cold or was more interested in entertaining themselves singing along to the music. Overall not friendly or professional. Won't be returning.

We were in York for the day and as we walked past L’Osteria restaurant, looked at the menu, it looked a classy place so we went in for lunch. We waited at the entrance and a scruffy unshaven guy in ripped jeans said Wait there! No smile, no welcome. He appeared a few minutes later and just said Follow me! He took us to a table next to a fan heater which was good as it was cold in there. We sat down and looked at the menu for about 10 minutes, decided what we were having when he approached us asking if he could move us to another table as he’d had some work done and didn’t want us near the wall, we said we would as long as it was not cold there. He assured us it was warm…it really was cold. Rather than stay and eat lunch in our coats, we decided to leave and get lunch elsewhere. I told scruffy jeans guy and he just shrugged his shoulders, no eye contact whilst looking at his computer screen. He had also put a table of six where we were sat. Very poor customer service. It’s a shame you think that you can be rude to customers

APPALLING!! No other way to describe. We had travelled from Scarborough as a birthday treat as they had a decent vegan menu which looked appealing..firstly my starter arrived but very dry so I went to ask for some olive oil and balsamic vinegar to find the waitress outside smoking taking to another staff member so that didn't happen. Next again out mains arrived and not a word from waiter whatsoever ever to find this also to dry to eat which I had to leave. When he came to take our food not a word .he could see I'd left it and didn't bother asking why. The customer service here is just not existent so please be warned. Its a lot of money to be wasted. And the toilets are disgusting and this was lunch time so no excuse.

Me and my husband came for a meal around 3pm when we visited York for the day, it was dead, literally only one other couple there. So we thought this was a good thing and thought we would get our meals quickly as we had a long drive home. Despite this placing orders and receiving the food took forever 🤣 the waitress stood around on her phone when we were ready for her to take our orders. On the plus side the food was lovely and hot. The other couple weren’t impressed with the service either. Maybe it has a better atmosphere and a quicker service when it’s busier. I may try it again when the service is a bit faster.

Bad start to the evening when both the lager and the bottle of wine we chose were out of stock. We decided to choose from the set menu and regretted it. While the starter of prawns in chilli sauce was nice, the garlic bread that came with it was simply two slices of very slightly toasted baguette type bread with little sign of either garlic or butter. My main course of lasagne was certainly piping hot, but not the best I’ve had. Two triangles of pizza bread on the side were cold and hard as a brick! Felt sure they were left from the day before. My husband’s food was “absolutely average, uninspiring and lukewarm”. Perhaps we should have complained at the time, but in all honesty we just wanted to get out of the place as it was very dark, fairly chilly and had little atmosphere. We were perhaps unfortunate. It was a Tuesday in February and could have been the chef’s night off. Others have had better experiences, so I’d suggest you give it a try and see for yourself. I’d choose from the a la carte and give the set menu a wide berth. We shall not be back.

We popped in here on Friday evening just as we were meandering through the streets of York and it looked so pretty from outside we decided to pop in. Although we hadn’t booked, we were seated promptly and received service all evening from a lovely young person who was welcoming and polite, and provided attentive service without being intrusive. Food was sublime - we had a caprese salad and the home made bread for starter followed by beef cheeks and sirloin steak skewers for main course. All were delicious and ample portions. They have a very good wine selection too and the decor is very tasteful without being too minimalist or cluttered. The staff are superb though and in a world where saying please and thank you to people in the hospitality industry seems to be a rarity, it was nice to receive such great service accompanied by truly lovely food. We had a great night and will definitely return.

We noticed the restaurant as we parked our car, the menu looked fantastic, we were a little apprehensive as the restaurant itself looked classy and thought it may not be the most welcoming place for 2 toddlers - we’re were pleasantly surprised that several families were seated inside with small children and the staff couldn’t do enough to make them and us comfortable. The food was amazing, it was so nice to find somewhere that allowed a family to eat a really nice meal without panicking about small children. Highly recommend, pricing really fair for such great food

Very disappointing, my sister and I booked ahead, as we were going to a concert that evening. I ordered Monkfish, it was chewy, dry, tasteless and massively overcooked, vegetables and potatoes were OK. I didn't mention it that night as staff were so nice service very good. My sister stressed her Chicken dish was also dry and rubbery. What a shame

This was probably the worst meal I have ever had in my life. I had the lamb and my friend had the chicken. It was horrific. Both dishes were over cooked to the point they barely resembled food, the sauce was water and the accompaniments mush. As I work in the hospitality industry I begrudgingly paid my bill out of politeness. I suggest you reevaluate your kitchen team as my school dinner lady as a child could have executed the dishes we had better. All in all an absolute affront to the hospitality industry. Go to Mc Donald’s at least they are honest with what they are.
