I was only visiting York for a couple of days, a wee staycation in the midst of Covidness. Stumbled on this after walking along the wall, heading into tow. Just had a coffee and a bacon sandwich but it was friendly service with a smile, sitting by the river watching the rowers getting a sweat on (the rowers, not me). A wee oasis of calm, don't pass it by!

On my recent visit to York (July 21) we had breakfast here on three occasions as it truly is a lovely spot sitting outside overlooking the river. Great selection of breakfast food (we enjoyed the toasties) and drinks (coffee, orange juice, etc). The staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Lovely sitting outside in the warm sunshine with such beautiful views of the river. Highly recommend.

Decent coffee and quality food. Had the BLT. Generous sour dough sandwich. The soup was a little stingy, small bowl and crust of bread. But all really tasty. One suggestion - drop the margarine in the sandwiches and use butter.

Very disappointed with this little cafe. Service was terrible, after ordering 2 drinks at the desk it took over 10mins for a lukewarm hot chocolate to arrive, followed shorty by a slice of cake, which was probably the only nice thing. After a further 10mins, the other drink still had not arrived, so we asked for a refund. Customers around us were receiving their food orders, while others were also struggling to get drinks. Such a shame as this cafe was mentioned on our boat ride, looks lovely and is in a great spot with nice views.

I wasted the best part of £8 at this place.. turned up on a very cold morning after reading reviews ..there appeared to be a little space inside thus I ordered a bacon sandwich and coffee only to find the spaces then taken up by people coming in behind me.. Iwas resigned to sitting outside the entrance on a cold steel chair in what felt like someone’s back yard with people on the bridge overlooking you... The food was ok but overpriced.i don’t mind paying a higher rate providing I’m getting the ambient experience which ges along with it.. I certainly didn’t in this case and the staff didn’t seem to care.. To be honest you should be discounted if you have .to be pushed outside.. Needless to say I rushed the food to get going.. I would’ve had a better and cheaper experience at greggs.. Overall a bad and thoroughly unenjoyable expensive experience for myself.. I won’t ever be going back.. There’s much better choices within the city

We managed to grab a seat inside. The cafe itself is in a lovely little tower. Ordered avocado on toast, & a builders bacon sandwich along with a couple of hot drinks. The avocado on toast was decent enough. The bacon sandwich however was disappointing. The bacon itself was alright however the size of the bread, cut incredibly thinly, as well as from a seemingly miniature loaf. Calling it a "builder's" is incredibly misleading as I can't imagine a builder in the land who would accept that. I would return for a drink as the staff and the venue were both lovely however wouldn't order food again.

....bit of of step with the other reviews. It was full inside so we had a table at the top of the stairs. It was freezing, which didn't help, but is not the cafe's fault either! However, being at the top of the stairs and not a lot of space, we were constantly being brushed against which wasn't very pleasant. We had sandwiches each and a coffee and hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was really lovely, much better than average, but tbh the coffee and sandwiches (smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel and turkey and cranberry) were really no more than ordinary. The turkey came on standard white sliced. We chose it because of the reviews, but although there was nothing bad, it was just average. For those who need to know, it's in an old building, up stairs. There are some seats at the bottom, but you need to go upstairs to order. It's small inside with low level seating and quite dark. If you have mobility problems or need extra space or light, it's best to be aware.

On a solo trip to york and stumbled across this little gem walking by the river. The girls were so attentive and my salmon bagel and iced coffee was delicious. It’s so quaint and quirky and I felt so welcome, doggos are also welcome 🥰

I really enjoyed my trip to the Perky Peacock this weekend. I had a toasted sandwich and a flat white and the flat white was maybe the best I've ever had. The bread on the sandwich was quite special too, some kind of local sourdough that's quite addictive! I sat on one of the seats by the river and watched the world go by for an hour in total peace. I did order inside though and the place is so cosy and sweet, in a medieval round tower that screams history! I loved the personal touches in the service and am looking forward to another trip this week to enjoy a bit more of this special little place.

As others have said, the cafe is quirky. The staff are pleasant. The tea and the coffee we had were fine. But we just found the food to be below average, and therefore poor value for the price. We had two sausage sandwiches; they were baps with one and half sausages butterflied. I know food prices have risen, but for £5 you can still expect a bit more than that.

What a hidden gem! We had been walking the wall around the City of York and came across this small stone built cafe which stated life as a toll house. The staff are so welcoming and friendly. There’s not a massive menu but what they have on offer is of good quality and quantity. There’s a seating area in the main part of the caffe and another below in ‘the dungeon, or you may wish to sit outside next to the river. Don’t walk by, stop off and have a coffee or bite to eat, you won’t be disappointed.

Located in the North Street Postern Tower is possibly the most cool cafe in York namely The Perky Peacock Coffee Shop. I love the look of this cafe ,interior is fantastic, exposed stonework, eclectic decor and furnishings and plenty of seating options especially outside were you can have great views of the River Ouse. My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a Thursday morning ,we were greeted with a smile by a chirpy member of staff,we opted to have a flat white coffee each,we sat outside and enjoyed our steaming hot cups of coffee. From the first sip till the last sup you can tell they use quality ingredients in their coffee and take great pride in the coffee they serve. We both really enjoyed our coffee's in here before we moved on and as on our previous visits to here we had a great time. The Perky Peacock Cafe Bar is easy to locate along North Street Postern Tower. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday,9am till 4pm. Well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Richard and Shirley make this place the friendliest coffeeshop in York. The decor is wonderful, very homely and cosy, with rugs and sofas. The location is fantastic in the tower, right by the river. The coffee is excellent and I love that they offer unusual coffees like long black, which I haven't been able to find at many coffeeshops in the UK. Have had the toasted sourdough with almond butter and banana, the porridge with sultanas, banana chips and cinnamon, and the carrot cake - all completely delicious. This is my go-to coffee place in York. The quality of everything is consistently excellent. You know you're going to get something great whenever you go.

This place was recommended to me by a local who said it was the best coffee and cakes in the city. After having been I must say I agree! The coffee was delightful and the cake was incredible. Everything seems to be homemade and a great amount of care was put into it. It is located beautifully just along the river near the city walls and it was so pleasant to sit out by the water and enjoy lunch. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating and I had a lovely experience here! Highly recommend!

I had tried the cafe over the road and it was awful, so I decided to walk across the bridge with high hopes for a better experience. However, I soon realised that these two places are owned by the same people - I was disappointed to say the least. The menu was extremely limited, with no GF or vegan options. The coffee was nice enough despite it being luke warm. The middle-aged woman who served me did not seem to understand the concept of good customer service.
