South Indian restaurant

I always prefer South Indian restaurants - there's usually a good seafood selection, which there was here and none of the usual chicken tikka masala type of sameness. We've been to Coconut Lagoon before when we've been in York and it was just as good this time as it has been previously. Very busy tonight so there was a bit of a wait between courses, but nothing unreasonable. As well as the good seafood selection there's also a good vegetarian selection as well as lovely looking dosas. We had meat and fish platters to start and both were very good, then I had a fairly hot fish curry (the heat was slightly reduced for me) and my husband had a biriani. Both were really good and, as said previously, different to the normal run of Bangladeshi restaurant menus. The restaurant was very busy so for those who need to know there was a fair bit of noise and there's music on too. The tables are quite close together, there's a couple of steps into the restaurant but after that it's on the level including toilets. If you haven't tried South Indian before try this one - it's very good.

Very tasty! We found this place on trip advisor and thought the menu looked interesting. The choice of food was impressive for a slightly small establishment. All ingredients were fresh and lots of lovely spices were used and the waiter was attentive despite, balancing a number of different jobs by himself. Would definitely return here for another authentic curry.

Outside catering from Coconut Lagoon

We held an event for 60 people from South Asia and needed a dinner, in an external venue. We asked Coconut Lagoon to cater for us and they did a brilliant job. Delicious, plentiful food and all dietary requirements accommodated. Reasonably priced and they even washed up. Excellent service and food, all guests very happy, many thanks.

Take away. Terrible

Ordered through just eat for a take away. This reminded me why I never bother with fake always. Everything was just running in grease and the coconut rice was just regular rice with desiccated coconut chucked in and for some reason the rice was in loads of hard lumps. I ordered a veggie curry and partner a duck one. Struggled to tell which was the meat based one as there was so little duck. Got 50% back though just eat, who said they couldn’t do a full refund. Coconut lagoon said they’d get in touch with just eat to issue the rest of the refund. Week ago now and nothing.... Starter to share (lentil donuts which were like sponges saturated with grease), curry each, one rice, bread each... £41. Terrible value for the quality we got through. Also it was an hour late... They justified it saying it was busy. It was Saturday, they should have anticipated and not given a false promise of delivery time. Wouldn’t eat here again. Most went in the bin.

Great start, disappointing mix up with mains.....

Arrived on time for our visit on a lovely Friday evening. A nicely set out restaurant with a nice feel about it. We chose from a great menu and had the usual poppadoms with a pickle tray first which was good, nothing brilliant here, but good. A nice bottle of reasonably priced wine, with a poor pint of Cobra of the two which never cleared, very cloudy and not fresh. It was obviously changed upon our request. Then the best part of the meal arrived, our starters. They were really delicious. A couple of spicy chicken dishes, a lovely king prawn dish and another dish which I cannot remember were all devoured with gusto. We all thoroughly enjoyed these. A sensible time was then allowed before the main courses started to arrive. My wifes lamb curry arrived first along with the 4 pilau rices, but no other curries. Obviously we waited a little while with my wife not wanting to start hers without the other three of us joining in with ours. We waited as long as we thought reasonable before we enquired where the other food was. This took a little while for the three waiting on staff to clarify with each other as to work out what had gone wrong. At one point the manager asked the waiter where the food was and he said it was not ready ! We though just not ready to come out into the restaurant but no, it had not been started .....meanwhile the rices and my wifes curry were now getting cold. They did get cold and all had to be taken away and freshly done. Once the food arrived we were rather het up and obviously did not enjoy as much as we should have. The curries were nice, but just not delicious. This is an abridged version of the evenings events. Needless to say once the bill arrived the proprietors removed the cost of one of our bottles of wine, and explained due to the mix up this was the discount. We politely mentioned it was not good enough and they went away and came back with another 10% of which was ok, not brilliant but we accepted this and paid up. The staff were polite with us during the course of the error which we were to them in our concerns about the service. It transpired that the table next to us had received the food we had ordered. This was obviously the mix up, but the table next to us just decided to eat the wrongly ordered food that they had delivered. Very odd of them. It has to be said that one of the waiters really needs to smile more, they really did not look interested at all in what they were doing. To end, I will say what I say to everyone I talk to about having an evening out in a restaurant. It is best to have decent to good food and great service, than excellent food with poor service as this makes the evening unenjoyable

Great, tasty indian food

We ordered a delivery of masala dosa (paneer), which came as a substantial portion, with several tasty sauces. We also ordered samosas, which were very tasty and well-cooked, and a byriani, which had loads of flavour. A great meal from a great restaurant.

Lockdown takeaway

By far, by far, not even close, this is hands down the best Indian food in York I've come across so far. And I have been searching for a while. I do have a part northern Indian background, and was brought up on home-cooked Panjabi food. So yes, I am biased towards northern Indian food rather than southern Indian (although I have spent time in southern India and enjoy the food there too). But having tasted the packed flavours, great spice balances and quality ingredients I'll keep ordering from here again and again. Basically, its real Indian food. And I can't say that of anywhere else I've come across in York yet. Lockdown delivery arrived hot and in 40 minutes on a Friday night.

Had our first home delivery from this much-loved restaurant yesterday - superb. My wife had Prawn Biryani and Bhatura (a kind of giant puri, fried bread, naughty but delicious) and I had dhal, alu palak and cocnut rice, just perfect. The delivery was very prompt, about 15 minutes. But what really impressed me was the generosity of it all: large helpings but also loads of free "extras", that we hadn't asked for, and didn't pay for: poppadoms, raita, salad, mango chutney and a particularly delicious vegatable pickle. I missed the pleasent ambience of the restaurant, but great to have such good food at home. Next time, it'll be their superb Masala Dosas!

delicious takeaway

We had gone to the resturant a couple of months before lockdown and while we are trying to eat our own food as much as possible we wanted a little change and the occasion to support a local business. The food was just as delicious as it was at the restaurant at the takeaway and the delivery was prompt. The portions were incredibly generous, we ordered 2 mains, one starter and one bread and we have plenty leftovers for tomorrow. The taste was fantastic. Many takeaways lose points because of greasiness but it definitely was not the case, everything was perfect.

Food never arrived - they just unplug the phone!

Ordered on deliveroo and three hours later still no food, they just unplug the phone so you can’t contract them. Now going through the hassle of trying to get a refund through deliveroo who won’t do anything about it until it’s delivered…despite the fact it’s obvious it isn’t going to be. Don’t waste your money.

Sorry for the bad experience in delivery you have gone through from our restaurant. we had a techhnical issue in our telephone line for a week that is why we could not get in touch with you one that day, but i am not trying to justify our mistake. we are really sorry for what happened on that day and i have explained about your bad experience to all our staff. please feel free to contact us to our landline or to my personal mobile number -07412539353. we wanted to correct our mistake by offering a free meal from our side. WE MUST HAVE GONE ON A BAD NIGHT FOR SERVICE!!!

We booked this restaurant as it had good reviews on TA. We arrived and were shown our table. Although the restaurant was not busy it took a while for our drinks to arrive. The waiter spilled our wine on the table (not a difficult task for a waiter). The waiters seemed to be hanging around and not serving customers. Two separate tables walked out as they were totally ignored. The food took an unacceptable time to arrive. The only good thing was that the food was good. Every time a waiter did come to our table they just apologised. Other tables around us were also waiting and meals arrived incomplete and not at the same time for the whole table. A takeaway customer's order was not ready when they arrived and after about 20 minutes it was given to the couple and that was incomplete too.!! I cannot see how the reviews on TA are glowing about the service - we must have gone on a bad night (Sunday). The only saving grace is that the food was good when it eventually arrived.

What a restaurant. Excellent southern Indian food. As good as any I've had, in this country or India. If you are not confident with the menu ask the head waiter to assist. We spoke to both the waiter and the chef. As a result we went back the following night to be treated to a selection of starters and and a great selection of three fish main dishes. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Not that good.

My daughter and I booked for dinner about 6 pm. Place empty.! so already lacking atmosphere. had to wait for waitress to come in before we could order, 1 Pappadoms and the tiniest portion of pickles out of a jar, and a very stale Pappadom, £3. 00 ! We live in London. And our favourite place ( I defy anyone to argue best food ever) ! Big Jug of water at table and 3 homemade pickles and sauces, and queues to get in. Meal Ok,! Rice at £4. 95 wasn’t worth it, just felt everything re-heated , no atmosphere .. Would not recommend

Delicious Dhosa Dinner at Coconut Lagoon

I really enjoyed my recent visit to this restaurant, I brought a relative to try out this authentic southern Indian cuisine. She has declared it to be the best Indian meal she has eaten served by charming waitron delicately spiced excellent food. I did have moment when I found the one green chilli in the Raita!! Hot hot hot! We are rolling home Happy and replete with the added bonus I shall be having curry tomorrow as well just delicious thank you.

Lovely evening out

Visited with husband and two friends and we all had a great time. We shared deviled chicken and a seafood platter and then had different mains. All were very good, full of flavour. The staff made us welcome and were helpful in food choices were needed. This is South Indian food so not the bog standard things you often find in an Indian restaurant. We have been before and I find the food as good as any Indian restaurant I have been to. Not in the city centre but was busy when we were there and it is by a carpark and bus stops so very easy to get to.
