Absolutely loved our visit to The Whippet Inn. We booked our table as we went on Valentines night. Love the decor and the intimate feel of the room. I had the Ribeye steak which was cooked to perfection - the best steak I have ever...had. It jumped into the No1 position after one bite. On the side I had the truffled Parmesan and black pepper fries. My husband had The Dogs burger which he really enjoyed. We shared the onion rings side. Also, the “Black Forest tart” was delicious too. All of it was simply perfect - service was fabulous, food was incredible - will definitely return in the future.More

We arrived 25mins early to be greeted by Rob with the top knot. He told us he had nowhere to put us as they had no bar area and to go for a drink elsewhere and to come back later. Not the best start !!...Food wise the starters were very average. Our sons ordered the burger which I have to say were good. Our wives ordered the fish which was ok. I ordered the £36 signature fillet steak which was 2 thin slices and should not be described as FILLET !! My friend ordered the T-bone which he left after a few mouthfulls as it had a terrible after taste. He asked the waitress to take it back to the chef to taste for himself to be told by Rob with the top knot “it tasted good” sorry to say Rob but your taste in a good steak has to be questioned. Overall a poor start followed by very poor expensive food. Toilets were a disgrace!! AvoidMore

Had Sunday lunch here - fantastic beef, amazing Yorkshire puddings and roasts. Completed with delicious sticky toffee pudding. Service friendly and efficient - I really don’t know what prompted the poor reviews - I highly recommend the Whippet Inn!

Just had a fantastic meal here. I had the burger, which would not have normally been my first choice, but I couldn't resist it and I'm glad I didn't, it was absolutely delicious! A lovely relaxed atmosphere with really friendly staff (our waitress Sophia, was...great). Can't fault anything about our experience and would recommend to anyone visiting.More

We were here for Sunday lunch. We both had the traditional Roast beef which was excellent. We couldn't fault it in anyway, fabulous! Staff were friendly & attentive but not in your face. It became very busy but we still didn't feel rushed. Would highly...recommend a visit especially for Sunday lunch.More

We were visiting York for NYE and this place was recommended to us. Firstly, I couldn’t fault the service. I do feel though that we massively over-paid for what we had. It was a 5 course set menu which I was little disappointed about as...heard that the steaks were great, and probably my fault, I hadn’t noticed it was a set menu until it was too late the cancel. The other odd aspect was the over-loud music which was a little inappropriate in genre selection for a romantic meal. So in summary, service was excellent (so I paid the service charge) but food was average and not worth the cost paid. Sorry!More

Well, both whites by glass that we ordered were good, that I can recommend. That's the end of it - focaccia was flat and hard to the point it was difficult to cut with a stake knife, and ribeye stakes which should be a staple...for any stake house were flavourless, rather poor taste, and chewy on fat or sinews, despite being cooked as med-rare*. Accompanying vedges were also without a taste. Ordered additional side and ut was forgotten. Staff were polite but uninterested since the moment we didn't order a bottle. Considering vfm it was really worst dining experience in York. * I understand the point in using beef from retired dairy cattle, but you'd need a bit more creativity to make it enjoyableMore

On arrival it was not obvious where to go so we stood around for 3 or 4 minutes before someone greeted us. The table wasn’t ready for our booking but was quickly turned around. Were told which items weren’t available so placed our order. A...few minutes later we were informed that one of the staters we’d ordered also wasn’t available. Very disappointed because we’d come specifically for that starter as it had been recommended. Overall the food - starters and mains - was very good. But the gents toilets were a mess with one urinal blocked and the floor wet. Not a cheap meal, with the 12.5% service charge, and despite the food being good the experience was let down by the lack of greeting on arrival, the menu items which were unavailable and the state of the toilets.More

We had 2 ribeye steaks, focaccia, smoked halibut, and "the dogs" burger. All food was surprisingly average. Tiny amount of halibut was really nice, all the rest on the plate didn't make sense and nice taste. Meat is plain by taste but cooked medium rare...as we asked for. A side dish ordered just 5 mins later (pointed in the menu) was forgotten by staff. We had 2 glasses of Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, and both are really pleasantMore

This restaurant was recommended to my wife and I by the owners f the Bishop and the Bison Boutique Hotel. They said that it was their favourite restaurant and I agree with them, it's very good. A warm, friendly, professional greeting on arrival; escorted to...a cozy and intimate table and menu choices explained in detail my a wonderful waitress. We thoroughly enjoyed our main courses, but both were delicious. My wife ordered "The Dogs" a dry aged steak and red wine burger with melted cheese, smoked bacon, mushroom, onion, lettuce and pickles in a brioche bun with fries. I opted for the Whippet Inn's signature dish a treacle brined fillet of beef with potato doughnuts (I'd never heard of these before) wish smoked bacon mayonnaise, onions, broccoli puree and watercress. The fillet of beef was sliced in two and the treacle brine keeps all the flavour in and the steak nice and moist - beautiful. We washed this down with a bottle of Scuffy's Shiraz - a perfect accompaniment. We followed this by sharing a chess platter for one which was more than enough between the two of us. I think that the waitress/server was named Freya. If so, a fantastic job. You're a real credit to this resturant.More

The Whippet Inn in York requires booking for a table, reflecting its popularity. During a busy Sunday service, some corners were noticeably cut, and component portioning to make up meals seemed evident. First the starter, we had the ham hock with pickles, it was enjoyable,...yet it could have benefited from an increased sharpness in the pickles to better complement the richness of the ham hock and a piece of bread wouldn’t have gone amiss. Despite this, it added a nice touch to the overall dining experience. The roast beef, while flavourful, appeared to have been sous vide rather than traditionally roasted and it just lacked that bit of umami and the same could be said about the roast potatoes. The meringue for the Pavlova was obviously bought in and not made in house, it was hard and heavily sugared. A home made meringue would have made a big difference. Service was commendable, and the drink quality was satisfactory, but the wine was on the expensive side so we opted for beer. Overall, the impression was that the food lacked the expected attention to detail and care and needed a bit more love. The Whippet is a lovely venue and to be fair we are not deterred from trying again but hope we have a much better experience next time. Quality of food was average to good Venue was good Service was good Value for money good.More

I would say not. Defo not for kids. Maybe dogs in the bar area but would prob look for somewhere else. It’s not a pub - it’s a swanky restaurant really.
