Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very disappointed in the service and the attitude of the serving staff. We wanted something from the menu without any garlic in and the only thing the waitress could advise was fish and chips. She kept repeating the same phrase about not being able to...guarantee anything which came out of the kitchen as not having garlic on it. We stipulated that we only wanted to know which dishes had actual garlic in them and asked about the Chicken Snitzel she said " we can only tell you what is printed on the packet", and she handed us a little card with allergies they are aware of and same phrase trotted out repeatedly. She had a rather loud voice and everyone started looking at us. The whole attitude was rather arrogant, as much as to say "We are Bettys and this is what we offer if you're not happy go elsewhere". So we ended up with fish and chips. Bettys should stick to tea and cakes in my opinion as the offerings on the menu are just the same as any other pub or restaurant, same old same old.More

As the title explains, it's all about the experience at Betty's tearoom. We had a table booked in the Belmont sweet upstairs, where we were greeted by lovely staff and shown to our table. There was a pianist playing light music, and the room was...busy with people enjoying their afternoon teas. We ordered our drinks, and shortly after they came, all looked wonderful. See photos. The flavours of the sandwichs were nice but not great, the scones were delicious. And the deserts were lovely. But the decor was very old and dated . But that's my taste. I'm not a fan of wood panelling. And the price was £50 each, which was, in reality, a sandwich each. And a couple of buns. But don't let this put you off. It was a lovely experience, and we are happy we've been. But it's not for me. I'm not into the pomp. And wouldn't ho again. And to be honest, it was that busy the place wouldn't miss the occasional average go not going again, as it can live of the thousands of tourists that visit York yearly.More

A lovely trip with my fiancé as I visited her in York. A little pricey, BUT tasty. Service was pleasant and atmosphere very lovely and calming. Would definitely recommend for couples and the hot chocolate is one of a kind

Upon our arrival, we were directed upstairs where we were shown to our table and the format of the Afternoon Tea explained to us. All of the staff were very friendly and professional, ensuring we had everything we needed throughout our visit. We chose the...afternoon tea with Prosecco where a good selection of sandwiches & sweets treats were on offer during our visit. The live pianist also complemented our entire experience.More

Arriving on a cold rainy day we were thankful that the usual queue was much shorter than usual. Quite a lot of changes to the menu since I was last here and I was disappointed that my usual menu choice was no longer available. The...staff were there usual charming selves and didn’t hurry us through our time there. I’m not sure that I will eat here again as I think that even giving inflation into account, and Betty’s reputation, their prices in no way reflect value for money. My lunch was most definitely overpriced and the cost of cup of coffee is excessive.More

A great York treat at Bettys on a cool and very wet morning. Just managed to get in for a late breakfast of Kedgeree and a Swiss Rosti. Both excellent. Greta pot of Yorkshire tea and into the shop for a couple of Fat Rascals...and Betty's thick custard slices. Mmmmmm.More

I can't praise Betty's Tea Rooms, enough. It was an excellent experience. The Tea Room was busy, so we were glad we had pre-booked. The tables were beautifully laid out. The food was excellent and the servers were immaculately dressed in beautiful, pristine, white aprons....A pianist played a lovely selection of music, throughout our visit. Our server was Kasey and she was just so lovely. She asked if we were celebrating a special occasion and I explained my trip to York and Betty's Tea Rooms was a much belated, birthday gift, as I was supposed to be in York, some two and a half years ago, but, due to health issues, I was only now, able to make the visit. Imagine my absolute surprise and delight ,when the pianist struck up 'Happy Birthday' and I was presented with a mini-cake, complete with lit candle. Everyone joined in the celebration and clapped and it made my day. On leaving the Tea Room we were presented with a small complimentary gift box, containing two delicious chocolates. Before leaving the premises I visited the 'Ladies Room'. I have to make comment on the toilets.... they were immaculate. I have never seen better facilities, ever. They were immaculate in every sense.... absolutely pristine. Well Done Betty's for giving the best account of yourselves. You deserve a brilliant review. I judge a proprietor and their business, by what standard their toilets are kept. If the standard of hygiene is poor it shows little respect for their customers and they do not deserve a good review. Betty's was amazing and I have no hesitation in recommending them and I will be back. A.McRMore

Was full of high hopes for Betty’s as had been recommended by friends. Lots of staff but felt let down during our service. One of my friends had ordered a soft drink and a fruit scone jam and cream, then decided before if was served...to order a cup of tea to go with it. The cup and saucer arrived, but no tea. We flagged to waitress that it hadn’t arrived and to cancel the order as were nearly finished the scone and no apology or explanation for delay given. Feel you are paying for the experience but it’s just a bit too cramped with tables. The table next to us asked for their remaining cakes to be boxed to take away and waitress tried to put them off by saying that it was quiet hot outside and the cakes wouldn’t last long, surely that’s the customers decision?More

We had heard such great things…… very disappointing. Very cramped and food was mediocre at best. I have since emailed my thoughts and still no reply three weeks later.

This wonderful institution of a tea room never fails to impress. The rooms have been maintained to a very high standard and retain all the art deco splendour of the RMS Queen Mary, which, I gather, spawned the original concept. It is some years since...I last visited York, but, if you have time, you must try this wonderful establishment. Be prepared to queue, especially at lunchtime, although, if you time it right, you can often walk straight in. Everything they serve here is just right. Piping hot teas and coffees use tip top blends. Cakes are light as a feather. Sandwiches pleasingly full. Diners are greeted and seated with old fashioned courtesy and everything is done to the highest professional standards. As you can tell, I love the place!More

It's certainly recommended, especially this time of year! We didn't book and waited outside for at least 45 mins for a free table.
