Enjoyed this place on a day trip to York. They serve freshly cooked food and home-made tray bakes in a friendly and homely atmosphere.
I’m dropping a point however as they only serve the full English up until 11:30am. After that it’s mainly paninis / sandwiches etc and I therefore missed out on what I’d visited for. In my opinion a full english should be available until at least 2pm
Bogs were clean and well kept, reflecting on the level of detail they put into all aspects of the cafe.

Popped into this quaint cafe before catching the train home and I wasn’t disappointed! It was clear to see that the venue was covid secure and I was asked to sanitise my hands before entering. I was also asked for my track and trace details. Before long, I was asked for my order where the waitress was beyond helpful to accommodate the slight tweak I wanted to make to my chosen dish. My drink arrived promptly and the food followed not long after. I was impressed with the perfectly poached eggs and the hollandaise sauce was spot on. I even decided to follow this with a slice of cake (which I was sad to not finish because it was also lovely). I would highly recommend this place for quality of food and it is also good value for money not to mention the location is also a winner! Thank you Wheldrakes, I’ll be sure to return on my next trip to York!

This was the first day of our mini break which started off in York and at Wheldrakes for a later breakfast before we stared a day of tourism.
I lovely little coffee shop which has been re-jigged to accommodate social distancing during C19.
We were greeted by the owner and quickly seated where our drinks orders were taken . Really really good coffee indeed!!
We both had eggs Benedict which was lovely.... Really fresh and good quality and the price was not too bad at all.
Whilst we were having breakfast, we were made aware that all the cakes and brownies were made by the owner..... We took a piece of brownie away with us and had it for dessert later in the day.
Really impressed by this little cafe and we can understand why it is so highly regarded on trip advisor.
Definitely worth a visit if you are nearby

I visited the restaurant in hopes for getting some eggs benedict or poached eggs and toast however due to their limited menu (understandably) these were unavailable therefore I got the small English breakfast which is one of everything.
The breakfast was good but i was not left stuffed, if I wanted to be stuffed a full English breakfast is available.
The ladies are very nice and friendly, i would only go back once their full menu is reinstated because the English breakfast was a normal breakfast that I can get from any cafe.

Really friendly, lovely little cafe. Exceptional find as this is the only little cafe to have a selection of non dairy milks to choose from in York, that we found. Liked the way we had to wait to be seated, asked to sanitize & then either were asked to use Gov track & trace or asked for details. It's nice to be kept safe
The coffee was delish.
The coffee cake & toasted tea cake were delish too
Highly recommend
Young girl who served us was friendly, smiley & interested 👍

Visited today after seeing glowing reviews and was not disappointed. Best breakfast we’ve had in a cafe for a long time and very reasonable for the quality of produce on offer. It’s around £8 for a full breakfast (2bacon,2sausage,2poached eggs,2toast, beans, tomato and relish) and £7 for a small which is 1 item of each. Will be going back in future.

Went in today for the first time with my in laws and my little boy, the waitress who greeted us was very short with us and made us feel like we inconvenienced her for wanting to come in. And snapped at us when we accidently put the pushchair in the wrong place! The hot chocolate was okay but it came with marshmallows which were very stale and seemed like they had been sat out a while.
Hope it was just a bit of a bad day as other reviews seem good!

Hi there
we’re very sorry you thought you was snapped at we have kids of our own, and many regulars with children as we’re one of the few who can fit a buggy in,
I asked you to move the buggy under the till for social distancing reasons with the table spacing.
I even moved you to a large one so you could seat together and just have a drink in.
I do go in auto pilot mode with all this Covid going ons rules and regulations,
so sorry if you think i came across rude, that sure wasn’t intended.
The marshmallows are air right in kilner jar.
Sorry for your experience
We hope to see you again in the future
Regards
Kerry

It was my birthday yesterday and I was gutted that I couldn't travel down south to see my family (due to lockdown).
My wonderful sister got in touch with Wheldrakes and arranged for a bespoke afternoon tea to be put together containing all of my favourite Wheldrakes classics (Mexican chicken sandwich, millionaire shortbread, biscoff cake and of course, a fruit scone!). It was a complete surprise and brought me to tears when it arrived!
Everything contained in the delivery was absolutely delicious. It came complete with local sausage roll, 3 types of sandwich, salad, crisps, a large selection of amazing cakes and even prosecco! Everything was perfect.
I've been going to Wheldrakes since I moved to York in 2018 and it has always been one of my favourite cafes - they are always welcoming and friendly. Their cake and coffee has been getting me through the lockdown period and is always spectacular.
The fact that they were able to put this surprise together meant so much to both me and my family when we weren't able to celebrate together.
Thank you so much!!
...and probably see you again next week for another coffee!

We go regularly to this family run café. The staff are very pleasant, welcoming and courteous. During this lockdown period we have had take-outs from there. Their flat whites are very good as are their scones - cheese, and fruit ones that can be buttered or with cream and jam. The cakes are gorgeous too, especially the rhubarb one.

Visited this excellent establishment for Breakfast. We had a very short wait for a table but all Covid 19 precautions were being observed. After perusing the extensive menu, we opted for the full English Breakfast and it was great to see that alternative items were available (in my case swapping Baked Beans for Black Pudding) and the ordering process was very easy (including a bit of banter revolving around whether I would be getting 'Geordie' Tea rather than Yorkshire. I was not disappointed when my breakfast, beautifully cooked and presented, arrived. Sausage, Bacon, Black Pudding, Tomato, Toast and 2 poached eggs (along with a pot of relish). It was quickly consumed as it was all delicious, washed down with 2 cups of tea from an unusually 'non-drippy' teapot. Like the food, the service was excellent and the bill was very reasonable. We will definitely be returning to this establishment the next time we are in York, and may indulge in some of the fantastic array of cakes that were also available.
I would highly recommend visiting if you are in York. 10/10

Tables well spaced, staff always sanitising and having customer sanitise. Really good cleaning of the seats and other touch points. Always being socially distanced even holding out card machine and brining good to the table.
Thehe food was incredible I had full English and partner has gluten free scrambled egg on toast, not on the menu but staff were so lovely and happy to accommodate or alter any of the ingredients they had. Also had gluten free mocha cake, all have made by the owner the night before, stunning! There was also so many other gluten/dairy/vegan options and other non allergy cakes all looked so yummy.
Amazed with the customer service, they were rushed off their feet but still remembered we were gluten free even offering the cake flavor. Whilst their we saw at least 3 locals who stood at the door and all of the staff knew their offer and name personally.

Really impressed with the gluten free breakfast we had from Wheldrakes. The staff are lovely and helpful. It's nice to feel comfortable eating out as a Coeliac knowing the staff are knowledgable of what gluten is. Thank you, will definitely visit again! :)

Excellent choice for someone like me who needs Gluten Free.
I had the Eggs Royale and my friend a small Breakfast.
Food was beautifully cooked and presented and you could tell the produce was of an excellent quality.
Both our breakfasts included poached eggs which were perfectly cooked.
Staff and owner were very friendly and helpful.
Next time we are in York we'll definitely be visiting again and I hope to try some GF cake 🎂😋.

This place is just wonderful. It serves up generous portions of great quality food at a reasonable price. The coffe is great too. We have visited a few times and have never been disappointed. The vegetarian breakfast in particular is amazing. The staff are lovely, welcoming and attentive. It's a must visit if you are looking for a breakfast or lunch in a welcoming, relaxed and non-pretentious spot in the centre of York.

At the end of Goodramgate is a haven awaits. Hospitable and friendly, this family run cafe serves you truly home-baked fayre; that brings new life to ‘coffee and a cake’, these words being too plain and simple for the delights you’ll find inside the doors of this place. Visit just once and tell me I’m wrong
