Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Visited twice during a two night stay at a nearby hotel. The garden is lovely and sunny during the day, and warm and cosy of an evening. The staff were friendly and welcoming, remembering to offer us a table outside when others left. Drinks were reasonably priced, ordering through the app was easy (minus one issue that was quickly sorted!) and service was prompt. Would recommend.

So new owners have taken over and boy they’ve made their mark, refreshing the decor, the drinks, the garden to mention a few things. The pub now has a warm, inviting and slightly curious Oxford nature to its decor. Oxford has always be home to many literary giants and stories which are reflected within this old pub. Quirky and fun and well thought out. Combine this with an improved and enlarged garden make it a great place for sunny days. The new owners have brought heart back to this venue which now feels inviting, caring and interested in its customers. It’s inclusive but not exclusive with everyone welcome in equal measures. Gone are the staff which found it a chore to serve you replaced with people who char and take an interest. Not a juke box in sight thank god, means you can have a chat, socialise and interact which surely is the point of a pub, is you want loud music, DJ and a dance find a night club. A pleasure to have this place back and will use it frequently, as I know I now want to make the journey into Oxford.

The staff was absolutely lovely and made sure we were alright and comfortable and drinks arrived very quickly after ordering. A drinks app needed to be downloaded but other than that service was quick, simple and easy. The atmosphere was amazing with heated lamps and parasols in the outdoor area (with stairs leading to the garden). Definitely coming back again soon!

Found this amazingly quaint,n welcoming pub,. the owners, Rob n Spike, made our visits so warm n friendly, and always made time for a chat,.. having only been open since July, they've made a great job of cleaning it up and adding a fantastic garden space, and even allowing us to have food delivered there to eat,as they dont have a kitchen!! ,everyone was friendly,n happy to chat n welcome us into their local, and all very kind n sociable, it was always busy, this pub made our stay extra special, spot on with social distancing, and sanitization!, and if we get back to Oxford, this will be the first pub we'll be visiting!!, Thank you so much Rob n Spike,n we wish you continued success, best wishes Helen n Brian xx🍻🍷🥂🍻😂😘xxx

I loved this pub where attention has been paid to every detail, staff are warm and friendly and the general vibe is warm and relaxing. The beer garden is an oasis of calm and just a few minutes walk from the behemoth that is the Westgate. Inside the layout meanders with little snugs and more open areas. The sense of history is there, but it doesn't overwhelm. The bar is well stocked and when I was there (a weekday late afternoon) it felt like going on a mini-holiday. Loved it.

The staff at JF (and Sherlock the pub dog!!) make it such a friendly and welcoming space and the place itself has so much character! It has a lovely beer garden with heaters and table cover so that you can enjoy a pint regardless of the questionable British weather, and there are plug sockets dotted about the garden so that you can charge your phone (absolute lifesaver). A must visit for all lgbtq+ ppl if you’re in oxford... if I didn’t have to leave the JF, I wouldn’t!!!

I've been drinking in the Jolly Farmers on and off since the 1990s, and have seen the place go through a number of transformations over the years; some great, some absolutely terrible. This latest incarnation of an old and much-loved Oxford pub is absolutely superb. The new owners, Spike and Rob, have re-imagined the place and it is now a clean, friendly, inviting place with a great variety of well-kept drinks. The redecoration is bright (and a little quirky!) and the new garden layout provides a great place to sit for a few hours. However, don't take my word for it. Pop in when you're next passing, grab a pint (or a cup of tea if you'd rather) and see what you think!

Date cancelled en route to Oxford. Undeterred I continued, but as i was alone and it was a bank holiday I went to the pub early so as i would not feel in the way or take up a table that could seat more than just myself. Lady that greeted me was most helpful and understanding that I was alone and my phone app would not scan. Then a bloke around my age appeared and said that if it won't scan can't order any drinks - unless I have just one (in a terse sort of manner). I explained that I would not be staying too long and if it was really a problem I could go elsewhere which he then said I should do - fantastic!!. What a welcome for a first visit!! I am sure there are some nice reguars who drink there, but I will never know. Maybe I am 'not his type of customer'. I will not return and advise others I know to avoid Oxford and go to gay bars in London. Parochial mentality and jobsworth customer service. After some sightseeing I had no trouble getting a drink and welcome at both The Old Black Horse and Oxford Retreat. I would advise readers to choose them first.

We are sorry that your visit to our venue wasn’t a positive experience. We ask all customers to follow COVID-19 guidelines and check in at the venue using the NHS app. To also comply with minimum contact we use an app to place all the bar orders. With no way to do these it’s difficult for customers to have a positive experience. The pub is extremely busy currently as we are one of very few pubs that has a permanent outdoor space. We welcome all visitors irrelevant of sexual orientation, and welcome customers local or not. We were glad to see that you found refreshments elsewhere in Oxford, it’s a great city so hopefully it wasn’t a total wasted journey for you.

My friends and I bowled in here at about 7pm on Sunday night and immediately loved the place. Glitter shots and caramel rum were a perfect bit of fun. Rob and Spike were the loveliest people, especially for putting up with us (and me ordering a double g&t every 10 minutes). The pub dog Sherlock was so cute. They even bought us our papa johns after waiting two hours. Have told all our friends to come here. Definitely our new regular. Love from Kate, Harriet, Emer, Macy, Yas and Ezra!!

My brother and i came here for a drink one evening in mid April. The welcome from the two guys was really warm and the drinks reasonably priced, we sat in the garden, although still being April it was a bit on the cool side. The clientele seemed very friendly too. sadly we only had that night in Oxford, but we will definitely return.

New landlords but old hands Rob and Spike have created a pub with a great atmosphere inside with the advantage of a large well kept garden. The restyled look of the interior is fantastic, think traditional pub meets steam punk. Good selection of drinks with ales you can tell have been really looked after. Welcoming (even from the pub dog Sherlock) and comfortable. A true community Pub.

This is a lovely place, which has become something of a second home since I discovered it a couple of years ago. The building is a beautiful quirky old place, the staff are marvellous; kind, friendly, helpful, very efficient, and keep an eagle eye on things so that nothing goes wrong. A great eclectic collection of books to read if one is on one's own as well as a range of board games, and I have met many new friends there (the staff have become good friends too), and there is a great atmosphere. I love Sherlock the Bassett Hound when he makes an appearance too! A really nice mixture of types and ages of people, and a remarkably friendly atmosphere that makes it more like a lively and very good country pub than most town pubs. Pleasant background music but not too loud so conversation is easy, all too rare these days. A relaxed, welcoming, place and highly recommended.

We stumbled upon this place on Saturday afternoon after doing a tour of the castle. We sat by the fire place on very comfy chesterfield chairs. We had a couple of gin and tonics which were delicious. Staff we friendly and happy which is always nice. Beautiful clean pub. My husband and I enjoyed so much we returned the same evening sat on the same chairs and stayed till closing time. Service is spot on.

What a gem! A great friendly pub with the warmest welcome ever. The young man who welcomed us in was full of warmth and knowledge about the pub and the city. Great beer and the WiFi pleased our teens! Lovely inclusivity that is much needed in the world. I’d love this pub to be my local.

The JF has been transformed by its new owners and staff. The real ale is now excellent and the decor is quirky and interesting with lots of fascinating pictures to look at. There’s a genuine warm welcome and great atmosphere which makes it feel like a proper community local. Oxford is not lacking in historic, quaint and beautiful pubs but the JF is one of the best. And, as a bonus, it has a lovely garden complete with a resident idiosyncratic Basset Hound.
