Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A traditional pub serving delicious home cooked food. The menu is relatively small which is a strength and good to see. We had the chicken liver parfait with homemade sour dough bread - outstanding. The panko bread crumbed Brie was also amazing. Then the enormous...fish and chips appeared - excellent, and we also ordered the burger 👌 It was a dark evening so we couldn’t see what looks like a very nice view from the hill top. As well as excellent food, the service was very good. We’ll be back to add the view to the great dining experience.More

A superb Sunday lunch - again. A second visit to the Elm Tree was just as great as the first. The welcome is warm and genuine. The glassed dining room has lovely views over the rolling countryside yet was still snug and warm on a...cold day. The service is excellent - attentive but in no way invasive. And the food...the Sunday roast here is the best I've eaten in any pub. Not only delicious (I had the chicken, my mother the lamb) but utterly delicious. Everything is just right - the homemade gravy and yorkies, the side dishes. Your only issue will be trying to finish the mammoth portions. Staff suggested my mother take leftovers home, and wrapped it for her perfectly. Other courses are equally delicious - a whitebait starter, apple and berry crumble with custard - and also huge. Do not eat breakfast before going. I would say it's excellent value. Oh, and all the tips go to the staff. 10 out of 10.More

Heard the Sunday roast here was worth a try and wasn't disappointed! Many pubs in the area offer a roast but my experience is the majority are unfortunately mediocre at best. The roast at the Elm Tree are magnificent and consistently served at the same...high quality. If you're looking for a very good roast at a reasonable price I'd thoroughly recommend booking a table at the Elm Tree and giving it a try, your taste buds will be in heavenMore

We booked for an anniversary meal. We were seated straight away snd waited 20 minutes to order drinks. Another 15 minutes a waitress came over, we thought to take our order. No it was for the kitchen is backed up now and we can't take...any more orders. We asked for the manager he was basically not interested and that we could come back another day to have a free meal on the house. But we booked and are paying for our meal, not interested in a free meal. The owner then came out and said the same thing and have free drinks and we will try and get you some food. I'm sorry but if you have booked a table for a meal you should have it. People arrived after us and were given menus. The most shocking thing is that we have been here several times and it has been busy and its never been like this even on a sumners day. Do not book with this restaurant it doesn't give you a guaranteed meal. Shocking absolutely shocking.More

Very Very disappointed with the service and menu. Having seen a lovely Xmas Menu in a local booklet dropped through the door chose The Elm Tree as our Xmas meet up for a seasonal meal with friends. On arriving was taken to our table. No...Xmas Menu to choose from was told it had to be pre-ordered. Normal Menu was the same as always, nothing different to chose from….Also then asked about the Specials on the board again told there was No Specials….Having sat in the Restaurant for awhile noticed we were the only persons there no other customers…..I wonder Why??? As it was Xmas we thought that it would have been very busy…..Disappointed with food and choice for the time of year. Will be thinking twice about a return visit in the near future….certainly need to up their game.More

Went for meal with friends, very welcoming place. The food was very very good and very big portions. The staff were friendly and professional, checking to see if everything was ok, which it was. Would recommend this restaurant. The only downside, we were seated out...of the way of everything and everybody and by the gents toilets, so not very Christmassy! Would still recommend thoughMore

We love The Elm Tree, location is stunning. Cosy for food in the barn with an open fire in the winter or take in the views in the conservatory. There's also another open fire in the snug or farmers bar as its locally know! Our...food was incredible. The burger was on another level, you know its a great burger when the juice is running down your fingers! The fish was delightful with a beautiful crunchy batter. Generous portions!!! Couldn't finish my chips! We had a bottle of pinot noir to wash it all down with, which was equally delightful. Staff are warm and friendly and it's refreshing to see the chef front of house who prepared your food! You won't be disappointed!More

Fantastic quality food and wonderful, friendly service from the chefs. I have a dairy allergy and one of the chefs came out to talk me through the menu and what adaptions could be made to accommodate. Unlike many other places I’ve eaten at, I didn’t...feel at all like I was inconveniencing the staff — they genuinely seemed to care. Service from the waiting staff was a little slow but I think the young man waiting our table may have been new, so that’s to be expected. It didn’t affect what a great time we had though. It was our first visit for an anniversary meal and we will definitely be returning. Thank you!More

This is a pub like restaurant but with a great quality of food. We had the cod, chunky fries and mushy peas and the burger. Both very good and big portions. The sticky toffee pudding was great! Staff was super friendly.

Pre-booked a sitting for friends as part of a work meal. Emailed in advance some minor queries and got a rapid response. Great setting in the main room with a log fire and spacious placing. All food arrived on time, well prepared, no delays or...clarifications. Burger I ordered was smashing, home made by appearance, chunky (but not jaw-breakingly tall for no reason), chips and salad (and pickle) all generous pub portions but excellently cooked. Everyone else happy with food, service, and all round goodness!More

Always a friendly welcome at this lovely country pub. I had the pie of the day this time, which was absolutely delicious. It’s a lovely cosy atmosphere inside on a cold day, and in summer, the views are great if sat outside.

Myself & a friend were at a conference in Reading and wanted a friendly local pub for an evening meal. Arriving at The Elm Tree, we were warmly greeted and very well looked after from start to finish by the manager, bar staff, sous chef...& chef. The food was exceptional, as was the service. We were made to feel very welcome and unrushed. If we are in the area again, we will definitely be returning. Highly recommended. Thank you again.More
