MICHELIN Guide's Point of View

A local forest gives this 16C townhouse restaurant its name. It has plenty of character, courtesy of exposed stone, sloping floors and lovely wood pane...

This was an impromptu lunch whilst visiting my daughter together with a wicked step-mother. If my memory is functioning properly I ate in this building many years ago when it belonged to Clause Bosi and was called Hibiscus. That was a good meal but this...was even better. Firstly given the standard of cooking, the ambience and the service £55 for a lunch time tasting menu was outstanding value. Especially as the plates were Shropshire size, not Shoreditch sized - it's hard to imagine anyone feeling hungry after such a meal. All the courses were good, the goats mousse with baby beetroots and the beef fillet with charred shallots/leek/confit mash being the high point. We didn't 'do' the wine flight but the choices looked to be well chosen. A very good lunch indeed.More

We had a marvelous lunch today, celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary. Wayne and his staff always deliver excellence with ease. The food is inventive, with subtle flavours woven through each course. It's high time Wayne was rewarded with the Michelin Star he so richly deserves....Thank you for making our day very special indeed.More

Our 3rd visit to Mortimers and always very special. Very friendly, professional and attentive front of house. We had a vegetarian tasting menu and it was absolutely brilliant. Every course was imaginative and just delicious. Wine paring all perfect for the courses. It was our...wedding anniversary and we had the lovely touch of this being put on our menu sheets. Only our opinion but we thought the tasting menu was better than the one we had at our local 2 star Michelin restaurant. So wish we could go every week. look forward to our next visit. Well done everyone at Mortimers for making our evening very special.More

I appreciate some of the comments about not having a sommelier however when you have a wine flight perfectly paired then quite simply you don’t need to worry! The food is spot on - there is clearly a lot of effort that goes into creating...the details without the need for smoke, mirrors and drama. We will be back!More

What a wonderful evening, their tasting menu was delicious and the lovely waitress's catered to our ever need. Food was wonderful and every single course was a delight. I was especially impressed with how a couple of course were subtly changed for my daughter who...does not like nuts.More

The front-of-house welcome is excellent (how many places take your coats these days?), solicitous, friendly and welcoming. The bar is very well stocked, the menu reassuringly limited to three options per course (too much choice is always a bad sign of food quality). The three...dinner courses turned out to be seven, if you count the amuse-bouches served in between. These included three kinds of bread (white, sourdough, tomato) and three butters (standard, parsley and garlic, and one blended with an olive tapenade), the bread freshly baked on the premises. The first course - sea trout - was a bit of a surprise as the accompanying vegetables included a tiny meringue (a cheffy fad these days which I account as silliness, since the young vegetables were sweet enough), the second - pan-fried cod in a brown shrimp sauce with asparagus and baby broad beans - was perfect (never had a better), but the last - coming after the pre-dessert, a tiny but perfect tiamisu - was strawberries, mascarpone and ice cream - a disappointment as they were chilled, semi hard and almost devoid of taste despite being locally grown and not from a supermarket, though I'll admit the choice of varieties is very limited at the end of the season. The wine list was comprehensive - we had a Sancerre to accompany the first two courses, and a glass of Tokaji Aszu which improved the strawberry experience, and when the coffee (accompanied by macaroons, fudge and chocolates) was served we were delighted to be offered a choice of two Armagnac brandies (they will warm the balloon glass for you at the table on request). Not cheap but well worth it. wonderful place to go to celebrate a special occasion with the very best of everything, but to do it every week would probably kill me.More

We had a lovely lunch at Mortimers yesterday. All really delicious, in particular the local lamb, and good value. We were also very touched by the warm welcome we received, including for our lively 3-year-old! In particular, the chef and other staff were kind enough...to serve him an off-menu starter and a very generous half portion of lamb for his main course – for no charge! So, to conclude, this is a great restaurant with amazing food at fair prices that also cares about making all guests feel comfortable and at home, even the smallest ones. Thank you all again.More

Yet again, I've come to Ludlow for some food shopping in may and had to pop to Mortimers yet again. And yet again, this place has never let me down ! Obviously i had the taster menu with the wine flight, and that was a...good option ! The tomato course was fresh and with a brilliant hint of basil. A confit chicken had power flavours, with a delightful black pudding bon bon. Next was a cracking bit of mackerel, which had a right crispy skin 👌 with Pickled Cucumber and tangy Crème Fraîche made this a goodun. Next was the lamb rump, which was probably cooked and with delicious peas & mash, and a dam fine sauce to go with it 😋... Then we moved over to the rhubarb pre-dessert, and with a small panna cotta and pistachio ice cream made this a dam good flavoursome dessert. And last was the dark Chocolate & Hazelnut. A great way to finish off the lunch! Dark, rich & and decadent 👍 And just at the end, i had to treat myself to the petit Fours which i found extra room in my stomach 🙃 Yet again had a great lunch and some great wines matched with the dishes! With friendly faces and well good food visiting Ludlow and Mortimers makes the trip extra special...More

High and prive and reputation but without the knock out punches that many other similar restaurants have. The setting and ambiance is great, staff really friendly. However the inventiveness and level of the restaurant fell a bit short. At this price I expect a great...cocktail and sommelier. The food should be well prepared, which this was to a tee, but at this level should delight and surprise, sadly it didn't. We had a lovely evening but with soany better Shropshire options this will not be high on the list for a revisitMore

We came here for dinner and had the tasting menu with wine flight. As you would expect the food was of a very high standard with an interesting seasonal menu - the highlight for me was the duck. The courses were appropriately sized but did...not leave us room for the supplementary cheese course. The wines were excellent, including Rubis with the chocolate dessert, which I have not encountered before. Good service from the staff completed the evening.More

You’re welcomed by very friendly staff and a stunning oak panelled long room. A £70 fixed price 3 course priced menu plus service was unfortunately underwhelming in flavour. We are quite happy paying £70 or even more for great tasting dishes but sadly not here....The dishes read and looked like you were going to experience really tasty courses but it all tasted dull and flat, as though the chef had gone through the motions of cooking the dishes but had little interest in them. A duck starter was boring as was a slice of sea trout. The sea trout was like a solid piece you would get from a supermarket on the plate surrounded by dressing. The beef which I am sure was top quality was quite dry (not juicy) as though it had been cooked in the oven a little too much, as opposed to in the pan, and although the accompanying sauce was very nice it was only a spoonful and made the entire dish very dry. I asked for more sauce but unfortunately there was none available when the helpful waiter asked in the kitchen. The beef came served with ordinary plain mashed potatoes, unwhipped with cream and butter making it just dry and somewhat tasteless. The braised shallots atop were perfectly fine. A pre prepared chocolate dessert was dry and heavy. No balance of having something more soft on the plate to accompany it. You need to spend in excess of £70 per bottle plus service to get a half decent bottle of wine. The food at this restaurant was vastly superior when staying in the area a few years back, which is why we returned, so we found it a great shame the experience was not the same. Only one other table of 2 was occupied during our evening booking but then it was a Thursday and the economy has changed.More

The best thing about Mortimers was the staff who were efficient, pleasant and a credit to the place. The staters we had were uninspiring, OK but lacking a wow factor. Same with the desserts. The best course was the main course both the lamb &...the beef cooked to perfection and the presentation was not overly fussy. The big downside is however the wine list. I recognised some of the wines on the list and was startled by the extortionate uplift on top of which the 12.5% service charge is added. One wine I can buy locally for £13 was listed at well over £60 - ie over £70 with the service charge. A few days later I was at The Walnut Tree, near Abergavenny. Not only was their food better but their wine list uplift does not make the eyes water.More
