I've been to MGJ twice in the last three weeks. Once a season is my habit but I had a friend visiting who's never been and keen to try. They offer a 7 course tasting menu. I the last time I came, my friend and...I were astounded and thought the meal one of the best ever. I have been back to other tasting menus elsewhere and found that a long gap between visits is often advisable as style menu sometimes only changes seasonally. I would have been very delighted to have the same meal as last time. But perhaps only 2 dishes were the same. It's a small team but they work well together. There's a great sense of fun and bonhomie. That also applies to the food. For the evenings do book ahead. But I have sometimes managed to get a table on a weekday for lunch. On average I come here 3 times a year. And I always want to come back. Everyone at MGJ should be praised.More

Oh my goodness ! This was the most fantastic lunch , food service & ambience were all amazing & the music was right up my street with a mix of Dire Straits, Saueeze , & Bowie to name just a few ! So refreshing to...go somewhere so good that’s not stuffy & full of pretentious people …. We will definitely go again very soon !More

Outstanding! This is probably the best meal I have ever had and I have eaten at some very high-end places. The cuisine is easily Michelin 1 star or better, and having eaten at many started restaurants, we think the reason why it’s “Recommended” is down...to the small size of the venue, and limited number of covers. This isn’t traditional fine dining because the ambiance is more like a bustling cafe with the chef’s personality reflected in the eclectic decor and music. This is a fun place to eat. The chef himself greets you on arrival and you can see him and his brigade working away in the kitchen. I developed something of a crockery and cutlery fetish dining on beautifully presented plates of exquisite food. It’s an outstanding restaurant and well worth putting your names down on the long waiting list!More

This was an excellent meal. The quality and skill of the cooking, together with thoughtful presentation was superb. It does help to have Gordon Jones delivering and explaining the food directly to you. Fine dining cannot be just about the food, the whole experience needs...to be right. The standard of service from all the staff was excellent. Wine flights can vary, the wines chosen complimented the food perfectly, especially the Alsace riesling with the mackerel course. The fish itself, whilst clearly tasting of mackerel, also had a smack of the sea too. The venison shepherds pie was also memorable for the intensity of the flavours - not entirely sure that shepherds care much for deer. All this in a relaxed atmosphere is very special. Lastly we had been booked in to eat here a few years ago but had to cancel at very short notice due to illness. Despite the nuisance this must have caused the restaurant were very understanding. It was good to finally eat here and we will return in the future.More

Amazing food presented in an incredible way and the chef is great fun. The only downside to this place is that service wasn’t included (this is a pet hate of mine that I’m noticing more and more in the UK - please just incorporate it...into your pricing) and it’s a little cramped within the restaurant. Other than that - lovelyMore

Outstanding and friendly service. The cuisine is excellent, though it may be a bit expensive. Yet, the quality matches the cost. A nearby brewery with great beer enhances the experience.

Two of us booked here to celebrate completion of walking the Cotswold Way. We are both committed foodies and over our walk we'd eaten out every night at varying standards of establishment. I think we had three tasting menus over 10 days but this was...the standout by a mile. Quite a small venue that we needed a taxi to get to but a really warm welcome from the man himself - and it was good to see a fellow Scot doing well in the deep south! The tasting menu and accompanying wine flight were perfect from start to finish. Creative, inventive and just a little edgy summed up both the food and the wine. The service was really excellent too - we particularly liked how Gordon came out with most of the courses to explain them to customers and it was also great that he and the waiters kneeled down on the floor so that they were talking to customers at eye level. So often they deliver there piece from a standing position so the customer gets a crick in their next listening. Loved everything but the rabbit was a particular highlight for me. Bath is a very long way from my home but I wouldn't rule out a trip there just to revisit this fabulous and exciting restaurant! Thanks for a wonderful experience.More

Wonderful food in a relaxed setting with friendly and knowledgeable staff. We had the 9 course tasting menu with some hesitation but it was so well balanced and delicious we made it quite happily to the end. We felt hopeful as soon as we tasted...the bread in a bag as that was delicious . Each course was delicious but I particularly enjoyed the rabbit which can be dry if not properly cooked: this was delicious. The puddings were lovely, whimsical and nostalgic and not too sweet. The wine flight was extremely good and the lovely lady who served most of it was very engaging. Highly recommended!More

Amazing! Five star food. Five star friendly relaxed atmosphere. Love the surprise element. Michelin people you need to pay them a visit. Throw away the concept of white table cloths, upteen wine glasses on the table, this is Michelin star food in a relaxed friendly...atmosphere. You won’t be disappointed with the food service or price. Thank you MGJ, really enjoyable evening, one to remember xxMore
