We called an hour before and managed to get a reservation for two easily. We ordered the steak sharing platter (4oz fillet, 10oz sirloin, 10oz rump - which you can have cooked differently) and it came out exceptionally quickly. The beef was flavourful, cooked to perfection, excellently seasoned with a lovely flame taste. It came with chips and onion rings which were delicious, it was excellent value for money. Although the dessert choice is limited, my creme brulee was exceptionally tasty and my partner enjoyed his sticky toffee pudding. A must visit for steak lovers in Bath.

We went for my Mum's birthday meal, followed the herd downstairs into a stylishly white washed cave-like environment where we were seated, were well served by the attentive waitress and waiter, enjoyed tender steak and chips with a side of veg and a selection of sauces. Great too to get all this for a special lunch deal. Thank you very much!

We booked this the week before we were due to stay in Bath after finding it on Google and it didn’t disappoint. The way in is down a lot of steep steps which was fine for us but if you had a buggy or were disabled, you would want to use the other side entrance.
It was quite small inside but COVID safe with hand gel available and all the staff wore face shields/masks.
We didn’t order any starters and went for the sharing platter for our main course which was amazing. It was 3 steaks (fillet, ribeye and sirloin) with chips which were out of this world and onion rings. We had a bottle of wine and a dessert to share and it came to under £90 including service which we thought was great value.
Definitely worth a visit if you are in Bath!

Although arriving on time for our reservation, they made apologies and we were asked to wait to get our table .A bit disgruntled and after about 10 minutes we were seated and when we ordered and our wine arrived there was a complementary glass of Baileys and more apologies. Good customer service and back in our 'good books'. Not going for the traditional , one of the large range of steaks and sharing platters they had on their menu, I had a Rack of Lamb. Excellently cooked and well presented. They have various sharing platters (a good idea) and their steaks, viewed on other people's plates, looked massive. You need to be hungry to finish your meal here. Very pleasantly decorated but the restaurant is in the bowels of the building and you descend numerous flights of stairs, leaving we left at the restaurant level, walked under Argyle Street and 'hair-pinned' up to the road, much better than the stairs. After a poor start we ended up having a very nice evening here.

So glad we could recover from a bad start. Sometimes it is difficult to negotiate tables and space with guests. We have a small restaurant made even smaller by the Covid restrictions. We do the best we can to create a great experience for everyone. I am glad we managed to do that for you.
Thank you for the time you took to write a review for us

We were apprehensive when we got to the entrance of the restaurant as it told us to follow directions lower and lower down the building, however when we got to the actual restaurant the atmosphere was so warm and welcoming. We were instantly seated (reservation is a must). We both ordered the prime fillet steak but when the waitress saw that my wife was heavily pregnant she recommended the sirloin for my wife as it is a tastier meat to have well done. All of the staff were friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable.
The food was delicious and we really enjoyed our dinner here and can't wait to plan another trip to Bath to go again.

We chose The Herd as our first place to visit after lock down. We don't live local as such but fancied a change of scenery after after being in lock down for so long. We were absolutely delighted with everything. The table serves were very polite, chatty and helpful, especially what we needed given the circumstances. The food was incredible, easily up there in our top 3 restaurants we have dined in so far. We both thought the price was fair given the area and the portion size was generous. We left full up and we like our food.. A lot! The scenery was lovely and had a lovely ambiance. Our verdict was without a doubt 10/10 and we're already planning our next visit.

My husband and I went to The Herd steak restaurant for a meal and I can honestly say it was one of the best meals both of us have ever had. We had the steak sharing platter and it was just divine, the steak was melt in your mouth and cooked to perfection, the onion rings, chips and sauces where also very nice. The portions aren’t big however the taste is amazing. We will definitely be returning on our next visit!

We had booked expecting a smart (as is expensive) restaurant. After walking down 3 flights of stairs (not happy as had just done Bath Abbey tower and my legs were giving way!) we found a frankly shabby cellar with peeling painted walls, old tables near each other, and a noisy atmosphere.
We had ordered the sharing steak platter, which was very nice, but I think they want you to pay for a sauce - another £3 or £4, because after asking did we want mayonnaise or tomato ketchup, the waiter went away and forgot us. We were told that a waitress was sick, but this doesn't explain being completely forgotten about!
Would not return.

My wife and I had booked a table for 7.15 on Saturday. We arrived a few minutes early and to my amazement we were asked to wait outside. Storm Dennis had been lashing Bath all day and it was cold, wet and windy. The waiter thrust a couple of menus at us and said someone would come and talk a drinks order. We'll we waited in the cold and no one came. I returned inside to find out what was going on only to be told very harshly that the waiter would be out in a minute. The time for our table booking had now passed and it was obvious our table wasn't ready. After a couple more minutes we gave up and left in disgust. It's a shame as we were looking forward to eating here as we had heard such good reports about it. We won't be going back!

Stumbled across this divine restaurant whilst on an overnight trip to bath. We had the sharing platter and the steaks were cooked to perfection, the chips and onion rings were also delicious. It had a relaxing and cosy atmosphere, and the servers were prompt and polite. Would definitely recommend and hope to visit again soon.

Had dinner on a Thursday evening and it was very busy. Only two staff working (not their fault they need more but can’t find anyone to recruit) so service was slow. A mistake was also made with our order - we ordered a fillet and a ribeye (one rare and one medium) but we got two fillets instead. Sincere apologies offered and cost of one fillet was reduced by 40% on the bill. Food was excellent (the focaccia we shared to start was lovely as was the chocolate mousse for dessert). Steaks were well cooked and tender. Wine was very tasty.

This was our first time to bath and I booked this restaurant well in advance due to the gov scheme. It was superb I couldn’t recommend it enough the setting the staff and the food were out of this world. Big thank you to Kasia who looked after us. I would recommend the sharing platter amazing value for money and they are part of the government scheme which was a bonus. We will be back.

We had to move table when we arrived which wasn't an inconvenience at all but the waiter was extremely apologetic which was very kind and offered us a dessert on the house. Highly recommend booking and visiting. Lovely steak, cooked perfectly, chips that come with the steak are yummy and the rice pudding is a dessert not to be missed - my husband claims it was his favorite dessert ever tasted.
Waiters couldn't do enough for you and service was with a smile. We would return.

This placed exceeded my expectations. I am always wary of having steaks in a restaurant as it is an expensive dish and a poor steak is so disappointing. No fear at this place. Between 4 of us, we had the sharing steak platter and the porterhouse steak. Each were delicious and tender. Porterhouse was superb. Along with the chips and a couple of sides this was a perfect amount of food. South African shiraz was an excellent accomplishment. We had delicious and reasonably priced desserts (creme brulee, rice pudding). Service was very good - thanks Kaisa!
