Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have just returned from a three day visit to the area. We paid The Raven a visit and weren't disappointed. Deciding to try their pies, we plumped for the Raven ale, one with blue cheese and the one with venison. We ordered them fully...loaded. These came with mash , veg, and excellent gravy. We weren't disappointed. Very very tasty. The drinks were good as was the friendly service. The cellar man could do with cheering up!!!!. Maybe being stuck in a dark cellar makes him grouchy.!!!! . All in all, very pleased.More

Precursor to a meal up the road, La Terra, see separate review. This is a very friendly pub, we did not get past the ground floor, our first time in here, and made to feel at home, that has got to be a good recommendation.

Went for dinner, and looking forward to having one of their 'award winning' pies. But very disappointed: The gravy was nice, the chips were nice, but gosh where was the chicken & ham in my pie! The pieces of chicken and ham, that I did...manage to find amongst the white sauce, were so small, just bigger than a grain of rice, that it had no taste at all. The pastry base was tuff as old boots, and took some effort to cut. My husband ordered the Raven Beef Pie, he rated it average, had better. Again not much beef, and small pieces, though definitely more beef in his pie than my chicken and ham, but the base again was tuff. We were very, very disappointed. Did we have a bad batch, as can't understand the 5 or 4 star reviews? Will not be back.More

Amazing range of great beers. Very friendly and efficient service. Didn't eat but many nearby were enjoying what looked like great pub food. We'll be back to eat soon.

Fabulous surroundings. The pub has a number of different rooms and traditional windy staircases which gives a lovely old English feel to the property. Great pies and mash. Good service, very efficient.

Very busy old fashioned pub with very good range of real ales. The pies are outstanding and the sausages also good.

I went here for a lunch of veggie pies, chips, and gravy. Served by friendly staff. Great pint. It defeated the purpose of the sauna and steam bath but I was happy.

Fantastic find only a stones throw away from the chaos of the busy shopping streets. Super friendly staff, great choice of proper beers, excellent food. We had the classic stew, a real winter warmer, and pie with mash - served with flavoursome gravy. Well done...to all involvedMore

The best pie and chips I’ve ever tasted - and the trick is in the gravy in which the above two swims in. Have copied the formula at home with Puka pie, chips from the local chippy and the higher grade oxo gravy. If you...drink beer at home, highly recommend buying the pint glass with the Raven logo. Makes one feel being in a pubMore

So I regretfully have to right this review… I love this place, but recently I’ve been very disappointed. The staff are lovely enough although the younger student staff have absolutely no clue as to how to pour a cask beer. Being a pub that prides...itself in its choice of ales, they should really be teaching their staff to KEEP THE NOZZEL OUT OF THE BEER!!! Not only does it take twice as long to pour due to it being sucked in and out of the glass, but because of how the pump works, it in turn then absolutely kills the beer. It’s practically a backwash pint that is flatter than a witches whatsit … There is the new addition to the menu; the stew. It is absolutely delightful and is full of flavour and a pleasure to eat, however at £19.50 the one scoop of stew is an absolute rip off. The sausage and mash is very much worth what you pay for, but the stew however is a measly portion and needs to be addressed! As nice as it is, to have a plate that is 3/4 full of mash and veg, and then a one ladle portion of stew - is a little pathetic! I really hope they sort the stews portion sizes as it could honestly be a massive hit with locals as well as the tourists, and give the staff a lesson on how to pour an ale. I do hope the management/owner see this review and address such simple issues, as it really lets down a great establishment. They’ve done amazing work expanding the size and I really hope more than anything, the beer serving sorted soon as I’ve addressed this to the staff and it’s not really been taken on board. Yours sincerely a loyal customer.More

We found this pub last year while visiting Bath and the cider is lovely. We visited a couple of evenings again this time. And made sure to have a pie and mash. I'm gluten intolerant so I very much recommend the gluten free one. The...service is very good too.More
