Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I like to try different pubs of all styles, and Just Ales is certainly unusual. I have now stopped here for a drink on a number of occasions as the pub is close to the bus station. The landlady is happy to talk through the...choice of beer and cider listed on the blackboard, I have never had a problem here. On my recent visit she suggested a blend of dry and sweet Hecks cider to my taste, and it was lovely. I always call in here alone, but generally get into conversation with other drinkers, and the landlady. It always makes a great end to my visits to Wells.More

The pub is cosy and sweet and has a charm. I would have given this four or five stars - but it is let down by the poor service from a very rude, weird, unpleasant character working there - who is completely devoid of charm....A short lady with glasses, older - and just really strange in manner - impolite, arrogant - just a bizarre thing that she has been given a job which should be based on being civil and friendly to customers. Her manner is so strange and unpleasant and rude - that this alone would put be off ever returning to this pub.More

We went to Just Ales because there was to be live music. When we arrived at 8.15pm it was silent. Just two small groups of people nursing pints, and an incredibly unwelcoming woman who demanded to know what we wanted. She hectored my partner when...he asked about choices because we’d walked past the blackboard that stated them. Thank goodness we didn’t stay because I’d have been asking for a non-alcoholic drink as I was the driver. Heaven knows what she’d have said to that! We will never be going back!More

After the search for real ales found this tucked away in a quite side street Very welcoming staff and customers. stayed longer than we had anticipated. Very reasonable prices and lovely beer well kept and served - a unique place from another time and place...no TV's no games machines just sit and talk and relax might not be for everybody due to restrictions of drinks available but if you just want to sit talk perhaps play a board game this could well be the place for you recommended and look forward to going again when next we are in Wells.More

The only laugh we had was how scruffy the place was and how you could serve beer that bad, surly unhelpful staff and a dirty smelly place. Not be going back ever.

.... then the host will oblige! This is certainly a pub that a particular friend of mine would probably describe as “An excellent pub of its type” to which comment we would roar with laughter. The beer offer is good quality but unremarkable. We tried...a local brew and a stout, both were fairly good. There’s a distinction between quirky and dirty that most real ale fans will have had to consider on various occasions; unfortunately Just Ales falls firmly into the latter category. I can’t claim that mine host was downright rude, but I would say that describing her as ungracious would be as far as I could stretch, under the circumstances. Worth a visit - if you hanker alter strange experiences- but I’d rather not go again.More

We have been to this wonderful micro pub for three years - we are only in Wells once a year but always return to Just Ales. The welcome is warm and the beers and ciders on offer are superb. Combined with a plate of cheese...you can spend far too many hours there enjoying the chat and hospitality. Dogs are welcomed which is lovely and Donna, the proprietor, will introduce people together so, if you are there alone, you will not be alone for long - if that is what you want. It is a friendly place to visit and welcomes families and singles equally. We recommend it wholeheartedly.More

I reviewed this micro pub back in 2017 and have visited a couple of times since then. Donna the landlady here has a very dry sense of humor and you get what you see. Good range of real ales and cider though this being Somerset...the accent is more on cider. Talked to a number of friendly locals and to Donna though be careful you don't get upset by as someone else has said her great South African charm.A great place to sit for a drink and I highly recommend a visit if in Wells. But remember as I have said you get what you see.More

What a lovely place and a great vibe. Donna is Donna and for those of you who were upset by her South African charm you missed a great opportunity. You should have been warned by her T-Shirt 'You are what you drink - and I'm...a Bitter person'. After buying our first pint I saw a sign saying 'CAMRA members get 20% off' so I told my mate who is one so he tried to get a retro-refund - don't even go there! Just remember before you order next time was the flat reply. The beers were extensive and priced to please so were the ciders, the dog was a little smelly but I'd been more worried if it had perfume on. Goto Just Ales enjoy the fact that you're back in the 60's chat to Donna and don't expect her to laugh at every crap comment you make - she's probably heard it all before (here and in South Africa). I don't mean to be harsh but maybe it says more about you than her if you go there expecting more than a pint and having a lovely dog lick yer hand. Can't wait to visit Wells again. My wife bought the T-shirt (if only it said 'twisted' as well she said)More

The mulled cider was pretty rough and the landlady couldn't be bothered to talk to us. We felt like we were interrupting her time on her PC. Wouldn't consider going again to such an unwelcoming pub.
