Visited the watermill on a Sunday wanting a table for 2 at lunch - unfortunately they were fully booked and we could see why, the food looked and smelled amazing! We stayed for a few drinks at the bar and were happy with that. The bar staff were constantly back and forward making stunning drinks for all the tables. We ended up chatting to the girls behind the bar, they seemed to have a great knowledge of what they selling and they were able to keep a conversation with us while making all those fancy drink orders! We aren’t local but when we’re back in the area we will definitely book to make sure we can try the food.

It was busy on a Tuesday lunch time, try to share cars as parking is a bit limited. I had fish pie which was basically very good, the salmon was fresher than most, plenty of prawns. Someone who ordered after me was told that there were no mussels which I was not told, but there were no king scallops either. It is always the most expensive ingredient that is missing, funny that. The greens were very good, slightly chewy for older people, but lots of them with a little butter, and not too watery. Someone ordered a pizza, which had wide bare margins, and did not look very interesting. It became a bit hot and humid, it was not obvious that there is much ventilation, like most pubs.

Hi DotfromLondon, Thank you for your kind review, my apologies about the fish pie, unfortunately we have had a few issues with our fish supplier which is why there was a few ingredients missing and as our best selling dish in the menu we added more fish and prawns to the dish, my apologies you were informed of this after. We are more than happy to open windows if it becomes too hot for our guests as it was very mild on Tuesday. If you ever need anything else for myself and the Team please let us know. Kind regards Charlotte and the Team

It’s the first time I’ve been to The Watermill and I was very impressed. It’s a beautiful building and the interior was gorgeous. The serving staff were young but very professional and polite. Our waiter was called Lucas ( I remembered his name as it’s also my grandson’s), he was very helpful, polite and nothing was a problem, he was also very knowledgeable on the company and the other restaurants. Our food was delicious but for me the fish and chips were huge and I couldn’t eat it all, I ended up taking half the fish home. Maybe offer two sizes/two prices. After we had paid we took our coffee outside on the lovely patio area with amazing view. As this venue was so good and halfway between us it will become our catch up spot!!! Thank you for a lovely chilled afternoon!!!!

This was my third visit to the watermill, frankly it was a real disappointed. I decided to take my friends for a meal on Friday evening as I really liked the decor of the pub, it is very trendy and stylish. However, the service really really disappointed me and the rest of my friends. We waited around 30mins for drinks, 4 cocktails and a jug of water!! I have worked in hospitality, so i know what its like to be busy, however the pub wasn't that busy and there were loads of staff just standing around not really knowing what was going on. Our waitress who took our order was very friendly and sweet, but we never saw her again the whole meal to ask for more drinks or check if we were okay etc. It was clear she hadn't been trained properly as key things were missed such as asking if we had any allergies, which as a table we did, plus she was unsure if there was a gluten free menu. Our food arrived in drips and draps; I ordered the fish pie, I knew from experience that they bought out a separate plate to eat the pie of, however I was only given the plate. I waited 45mins to be given my fish pie, by this time my friends had finished. Although the food was delicious, it was ruined by the fact I had to eat on my own. We all decided we wanted to look at the desert menu, but by the time we waited for someone to clear our plates we just asked for the bill. The bill came quickly and the waiter explained that the fish pie had been taken of the bill, but no real apology was given. We then waited a further 30mins for the card machine to arrive, by this time the pub was almost empty and their was a crowd of staff standing by the bar, it looked really unprofessional, when it was clear we were sat their waiting to pay. I think the place has such great potential, and I would really like to see it succeed due to its great location, beautiful decor and good food. However, if the service doesn't drastically improve I sadly will not be returning.

The decor of the place is beautiful and hardly able to recognise since its refurbishment. The outside areas are particularly attractive and certainly make the most of the views of Boxhill, some lovely touches cushions, blankets, heaters and the light fittings are super. The gentleman who showed us to our table was very welcoming and our waitress was friendly. We all enjoyed our meals but felt that the service was very SLOW and it is quite expensive!"

My husband and I visited the Watermill on a Saturday night with friends (a group of six of us). We’d not visited before (pre or post renovation). Interior The bar and restaurant decor is lovely and has obviously had no expense spared. They’ve really done a great job of the interior. We didn’t use the garden area but from what I could see, it looked spectacular for a pub garden. The atmosphere and ambiance was great; warm, inviting and well lit. Food The food at the Watermill was average. Between the six of us, we had a full range of starters, mains and desserts. The menu is fairly limited so would recommend viewing it before going. Unfortunately, despite going on a Saturday night at peak time when they should have been well stocked, many items that we wanted to order had run out. Half the white wine menu was unavailable and I ordered a pizza, only to be told there was no pizza left as they had run out of dough. I ordered the chicken burger instead which came with no salad (in or out of the burger) and was essentially just a piece of chicken in a bun with too much mayonnaise and a handful of chips on the side. The food is definitely overpriced for what is average pub food. Service Unfortunately the service is what let’s the Watermill down the most. The staff are inattentive and have possibly not been trained very well (yet). I ordered a Pimms at the bar before we went to the restaurant area, which completely threw the bar tender, who seemed to have to ask a manager how to make it. Once in the restaurant we waited around 30 minutes to have our food order taken and then a further 30-40 minutes for our starter to arrive, so well over an hour until we started eating. The whole meal was slow to be served throughout and main meals were served at different times. This meant that some of us had to start eating before others were served their meal as the food was going cold. Another slight irritation was that our cutlery was not replenished between the starter and main course and we had to ask for cutlery. When the waitress then brought the cutlery over, she placed it in a pile in the middle of the table. Whilst this is a minor issue, it matters when you are paying prices aligned with higher end restaurants where there is better service and attention to detail. There certainly wasn’t a lack of staff available but they appeared to have no direction, pace or enthusiasm for serving customers. All in all, I would say the restaurant is lovely, food is average and overpriced and service leaves a lot to be desired. I won’t rush back but would maybe pop in for a drink on a warm day to experience the garden area and views.

We have visited the Watermill many times and on the whole have been very impressed with our visits. The food is impressive and the view is stunning. However, our recent visit on the May bank holiday did not live up to the standards we had come to expect. When we arrived we were greeted by a very blunt waitress who told us that we could not order food unless we had booked. Out of interest, we looked whether it was still possible to book a table online. Much to our surprise, it was possible and so we decided to book online for an hour later. We then received a phone call cancelling our booking. We were told that this was because they were understaffed. Whilst we appreciate the difficulties that come with a bank holiday for a business, we were not impressed that our booking was not honoured despite being able to still book online. Also, the excuse felt unjustified as we could only see a few tables seated (around 8pm). Despite all this we decided to stay for a drink and enjoy the view outside. We were met with waitresses who were chatting behind the bar, one chewing gum, and all being very unbothered about us standing waiting for our drinks. The attitude of the staff made it feel as though they wanted to close early rather than serve paying customers. Overall our visit was disappointing due to blunt and unbothered staff. This visit has put us off from returning anytime soon

From the moment me and my partner walked through the door the evening was ruined, we had booked a table earlier on in the day , on announcing are name on arrival we were then told that we didn’t have a booking? We were then stuffed in a corner next a couple with a dog? Not exactly what I had I mind when dog started growling ( I except that’s not the water mills thought but still not ideal) plus the waiter that told us we didn’t have booking took more interest in the dog than finding out where are booking was. I then refused to sit at that table and eat, we had a drink at the bar and meeting Emilia the bar waitress, she found our booking straight away?? She also was very helpful and tentative. So we’re now happy finally sit down at our booked table after 30 to 40 mins. order food my self ordered a starter and my partner orders a stix of the menu to come with my main £35 yes £35 t- bone steak. We waited another 45 mins and was brought a cold t - bone steak no starters and no stix. I was then just left for up to 10 mins with a cold t- bone steak in front of me. I then had to physically get up grab a manger and explain that our night had been ruined. We then waited another 30 mins for the right order of food which was yet again cold. Steak come again!! And for £35 I think there having a laugh. Tough chewy steak , mushy tomato , breadcrumb on mushroom was raw. Tbh I don’t think I will ever eat there again. The only good thing is they wiped the whole bill. The water mill could be a really good restaurant if 90% of the staff knew what they were doing and had the right guidance. Also Chef needs to buck up his ideas if he wants to charge the prices he is. End result really disappointing. Such a shame because establishment is really nice just don’t think the service or food has changed from previous owners.

Hi SimonGK1980, Thank you for you comments and we are so sorry that we didn't get it right on this occasion The Team and I are sorry that your visit wasn't the best that we have here to offer at The Watermill, we appreciate you honest review, and from this we have made some adjustments and spent time with the team on how we manage the system. We are honest enough to say that the Saturday that you visited us really didn't go to the way we hoped and we discussed what had happened at our Manager meeting and have made several changes with how we manage our peak shifts. Please give us another chance in the future as we are still in the learnings of the new Watermill. Thank you for taking the time and we hope you will consider us again in the future. Kind regards Charlotte

Some of the food was tasty, but our overall experience was mixed. The duck Stix was delicious but the Halloumi very over priced at £4.50 for just one piece of cheese. Our main waiter was friendly (Lucas). There was a wait for drinks to be brought. A waitress just plonked my glass of wine down as she walked past quite fast, without even saying anything - really bizarre! We needed to wave a few times to get their attention. It is a big place and the waiting staff were not always around or looking. Appreciated being offered a large glass of wine for the price of a medium, due to the delay in the wine being brought with the main meal. But the new decor is lovely, and we were fortunate to sit at one of the tables with the view of Box Hill. Will go back, and hopefully some of the service issues will get sorted out.

I booked a table 5 weeks ago for a special anniversary and we were very disappointed with the service (bar staff had to ask how to make the drinks on their menu and some staff were just unresponsive and left us waiting when we asked questions), a few of the dishes were immediately advised as being unavailable (no pizzas at all, liver parfait) but when we then tried to order were told those dishes weren't available either (a few of the Stix plates, couple mains). The large giant scallops left much to be desired and the pie was hard with more pastry than filling). Outside tables weren't being cleared and tables were sticky resulting in ants arriving. After waiting so long to visit it was a huge disappointment. Perhaps they rely on the view and location so the drinks and meals are just the extra??

We visited The Watermill on Sunday evening having booked a table for 4 people two weeks beforehand. The overall experience was extremely disappointing with regard to both service and food. When we arrived we had to wait until someone showed us to the table. We then had to find someone to take our order and this was the theme of the evening - trying to find a member of staff to attend to our order/meal. We all ordered Roast dinners and they finally arrived almost an hour later. The bread sauce and cauliflower cheese were missing and we were finally told they had run out of these but had not been informed when the order was taken. There was a tiny amount of vegetables to share and the roast potatoes were hard to cut. The meal was tepid at best and we had to request extra gravy. The desserts were uninspiring especially the pineapple with coconut yoghurt which was overcooked and the yoghurt was tasteless. The staff did not seem to know what they were doing and instead of having the same server throughout the meal, we had several serving us - each not knowing what the other was doing. We did see the female manager in charge who was apologetic and explained they had underestimated the number of people who visited the restaurant that day. She gave us a discount and then asked for our email so that she could invite us back for a complimentary meal to redress our experience. To date we have not received this and we are not sure if we really want to repeat the experience. If they had been honest about the staffing issues and lack of food items throughout, it would have been less frustrating. There are a number of nice pubs and restaurants in the area so I would recommend avoiding this one. We wanted to give them a chance as they have recently reopened but now wish we had gone somewhere else!!

Food was fine and the refurb of the premises has made a great difference to provide a nice dining experience. Other reviews have noted the price of the food and I tend to agree however this is similar to other pubs in the area. The optional 12.5% service charge is a real annoyance and I would prefer this wasn’t automatically added to the bill, I would prefer to give a gratuity based on experience and not the establishments expectation and for this reason will be extremely reluctant to visit in future.

We booked in advance for lunch and we’re only able to secure a table for two at 2.30. Okay, no problem. It was very busy when we arrived. We ordered a starter each and a main each and a drink. The food was poorly presented and we did not enjoy what we ordered. It didn’t feel that there is a chef running the kitchen. I ordered the humus and it arrived in a small pot, with my plate ‘dressed’ with three untrimmed spring onions, and five unwashed radishes cut in half with three thin slices of dry bread. The cost of wine was exorbitant! One glass cost more than an whole bottle of good quality wine. We had been to the Watermill once or twice before it’s decline and refurbishment so we thought we would try it once again and see how much it had improved - we hoped. The landscaping must have used up most of the budget and was attractive, as was the new interior settings. But I think that the catering side should definitely have more investment. We paid a very high price for a lunch that was much less enjoyable than other pubs in the area. The menu was grange and seemed completely weird and confused in the combinations it offered. Sorry - won’t be recommending or returning.

I can honestly say that this is one of the worst lunch experiences I have had. After being seated we waited 55 minutes for 3 roast beef dinners to arrive, during this time there was no indication from the staff that the food would be delayed. Whilst waiting for our order we overheard another table being told there was a "massive problem" with their yorkshire puddings but did not come and tell us the same thing. When our order arrived only one plate had a Yorkshire pudding, All 3 plates and food were stone cold with rock solid potatoes which weren't even slighty warm in the middle. We then waited for another 5 minutes before the cauliflower cheese and gravy arrived (still no veg). The waiter we had was very polite but we were not offered another plate of food so decided to send our food back and we left with empty stomachs. At no time did the manager come and apologise for the food being delayed or being inedible. There is clearly a problem in the kitchen which is understandable, but this should be taken into consideration before taking lots of bookings and orders that cannot be fulfilled properly. I would not recommend this pub, although the decor/view outside is nice.

After hearing from friends who visited the pub in early May, & said it was excellent, we decided to go with them & 2 others this week. Lovely spacious venue. Good parking & beautiful views. However. We were told on our arrival there were no steaks or pizzas available. Once we had decided what to have we waited an hour for the meals to be served & had to chase it up. My husband’s scallops were very small and cold instead of hot. The bread which was described on the menu as ‘fresh’ was stale (after waiting ages for it). We then asked if we could have our desserts & coffees on the terrace outside & told we had to settle the bill first even though there was no ‘escape route’ they may have thought we would take not to pay! A huge bar, yet no Zambuca available as a liqueur. Staff were very pleasant but it was all a waste of money due to the quality of the food.
