Thanks for a great lunch, good beer in a lovely location with very friendly and efficient staff. A great destination for walking or biking in the Box Hill / Ranmore area. Deservedly very popular - so do book ahead.

My wife booked a table here for my birthday and I have to say it’s really lovely food and friendly staff. It’s an old traditional pub like we got in the 70’s but a really nice place.
We were a family of four with two young children and ate early (5.45pm), ordering steak and fries, a pie of the day, and 2 items off the kid's menu. The food was well cooked and v good , served with a broad selection of...veg and I appreciate that the kid's pizza was home-made with care and attention. Staff were friendly and gave a beer gratis when I noticed that one was missing off the itemized bill. The only gripe was the room was a bit dark and gloomy, and carpet well trodden (by walkers I suspect) and wasn't the main restaurant area, although due credit, we were offered a table outside in a very nice eating area, although it was too cold to eat there. I would certainly visit and eat again if I was in Box Hill area of Surrey again.More
I booked to eat here for my birthday lunch (7th October 2023) after visiting in 2014. When I had first visited it was a lovely experience. I was pretty horrified to see the dilapidation of this beautiful pub. When we arrived I went to the...bar to find out where we would be seated. We were greeted by unfriendly staff who told us to go and find someone to help us outside. When we went outside we went up to who we believed was the owner who again was brusque and rude and told us to find a waiter to help us. We then asked one of the waitresses and she seated us on the lower terrace. The terrace was covered in pigeon poop, the tables and chairs were rusty and still had the remains of the last meal, the seat cushions were old, flat and filthy and we had to use 2 each to feel remotely comfortable. We then ordered our drinks and food and had to ask 3 times where our drinks were in 25 degree heat. After asking where our food was 4 times and waiting 1.25 hours we gave up and decided to leave. The staff at this pub are very young and not at all experienced. I hasten to add that this is not their fault but I suspect the owner has done little to train them well. The owner is an imposing character and very brusque and rude in his manner. He treated my friend and I appallingly saying directly to me “I don’t know why you’re in such a bad mood” after we had explained we had booked this in advance for a birthday celebration and had waited for too long. He tried to blame a party of 20 for the delay but as he said they had pre-ordered so that would have been organised in advance right? Most people were just drinking and we arrived at 2.30pm as the lunchtime rush was ending. To be fair he offered us our meals for free but by that time my friend and I were so fed up waiting with inattentive, untrained and unconcerned staff that we didn’t want the food or anything. The manager/owner then very loudly had a go at us when we were leaving trying to shame and embarrass us I presume to which I retorted “ I think that’s enough now, you’re really only embarrassing yourself now and making yourself look like an idiot”. We then went to The Watermill in Dorking and even though we hadn’t booked they made every effort to seat us at the terrace and their service was excellent. We waited minutes for a drink and 10 minute for food even though they were 5 times as busy as the King William. The Watermills Maitre D’, Daniel is Fabulous. I was so looking forward to going to the King William in Mickleham because it’s been a well known pub for years so I was bitterly disappointed at the lackadaisical and rude treatment I received there from the manager/owner.More
This pub is perfect all year round - cosy in the winter and stunning views from the garden in the summer. Lunch today was fantastic - the food was spot on (we had a mix of burgers, pies and salads on our table) and the...service friendly (special shout out to Richard for this). Tips: do book ahead as it’s popular and do take cash for tips as, whilst you can pay by card, only cash tips are accepted and they are well-deserved.More
Our visit reduced the two of us to nervous wrecks.. Took hours finding it, going up and down the A24 despite the assistance of Waze. Tried to ring to say we were late but got only recorded message. Eventually saw tiny, narrow, precipitous passage way...steps, but where to park - told to park on main road! Did find private road and parked despite warning not to.Eventually got up the stairs with dog pulling. As wife and self both old and infirm, not the sort of thing we should be doing. We were booked in for 12.45 but eventually ate at 2.00. Food and service were god but not worth the nightmare getting there.Never again!More
Just spent a fabulous Sunday afternoon with friends in this wonderful pub! The food was incredible, especially the dressed crab special, lovely wine and live music, friendly helpful and very personal service and the most amazing views over the Surrey hills, couldn’t be more perfect!...Thank you!More
Lovely evening here once again, came for a quick drink on a sunny evening and ended up staying for several and dinner. Great food and fantastic, attentive service - especially from Richard - who seated us and looked after us most of the evening. delicious...food from the kitchen, lovely drinks and friendly table service, you all did amazingly in the unexpected 30 degree heat. Thank you!More

Lovely find, fabulous Sunday lunch with an amazing view! Staff were very friendly. Definitely need to book before going as it was very busy when we visited. Need to check before going as up an incline and up steps to pub, might prove difficult if...mobility is an issue. But well worth the climb if able.More
Excellent ploughman's back up to old standards. DO REMEMBER TO TAKE CASH FOR TIPS, CARDS NOT ACCEPTED. Refurbished outside dining area. If you like lager try a pint of the King Billy.
We were not allowed to buy a drink at the bar so got seated and waited 40 minutes for the drinks to arrive. They forgot the order - eventually I went to the bar insisted I was served there and then. Food was mediocre. Please...can you go back to bar service. Your staff are too young and too inexperienced.More
This place is a little gem. The view is amazing what a spot - the 2 young lads on shift who served us was very polite and very helpful, even when it was very busy, credit to the pub. The food was very very good....Dessert was ok. Would definitely recommend if you thinking on trying. ✅More
We stopped off here whilst walking the Box Hill hike and it’s been the highlight of our day so far! Delightful service and very sweet staff The food was really really high quality with an exciting selection on the menu to choose from. I had...the sea bream and my boyfriend had the chicken burger, both were thoroughly enjoyed.More
A friend and I planned a lovely Sunday walk to end up for a Sunday Roast Dinner at this pub based on it's excellent reviews and we were not disappointed. The food was delicious, the staff were lovely, relaxed, professional and friendly, and the setting...is beautiful. The live music was amazing and we had a really wonderful time. Highly recommended and make sure you park on the main road, don't turn up the tiny road by the pub you can't turn around!More
