About
We've been entertaining the people of Guildford for more than 400 years and we're proud to say that we're the area’s longest-running live music venue, showcasing some excellent acts including The Stranglers, who performed their first ever gig here! Close to the vibrant shopping district, river and Guildford Castle, our 16th century pub is split over three levels and has been refurbished to the highest standards while maintaining many historic features. With a real fire, an intimate courtyard garden and a host of snug and cosy corners, it is a great place to relax, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy traditional pub food and distinctive cask ales. We even reputedly have our own ghost – a man in uniform who sometimes chats to guests! Why not pop over to see us all soon...

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I strolled in here looking for a bite to eat and was pleasantly surprised. It's a proper oldly worldy pub which can sometimes feel a little bit daunting when you are on your own and an outsider but it was very warm and welcoming, both staff and regulars were friendly and chatty and the food was good and the portions were large. Would happily visit again.

This place is a bit of a tardis and we came with my friend who is vegetarian on a busy Saturday lunchtime when our other walk in options were full. We were both surprised by the vegan options including vegan bacon on the burger and when it was delivered we were even offered vegan mayonnaise. Great service, good food and good value. Will come again.

Stopped here for a drink and some lunch. The pub itself has a lot of character inside and has some cosy seating both inside and outside which gives it a lovely feel. The staff were friendly and welcoming. However the food was not worn the price at all. We ordered a sandwich each thinking at £7 per sarni it would come with some chips or something. It was really disappointing, there were some brown droopy rocket leaves for decoration. Just not worth the price, May consider going back for a drink but definitely not for any food.

This was a disappointing visit. My burger was massively overcooked (burnt would be a better description) though still quite tasty, if a little expensive. My partner's nachos were okay, and a very reasonable price for them.
The really disappointing thing was the smell of the pub - it had a musty smell - like going into an ancient old aunt's house. The loos were also disappointing being very smelly and unclean (that was just the ladies, I hate to think how bad the gents were). I think the problem here is that you can get to the loos without going close to the bar, so anyone in town could sneak in and use them as a public loo. Basically the whole place needs a really deep clean to feel fresh again.

On the side outside this pub, they say that it is the oldest pub in Guildford. On the day we stopped for lunch, they could not offer a full menu as they had no gas. Settled for sandwiches and a beer, which was not bad. This pub has lots of character and would love to have tried one of their main lunch meals.

One of my two favourite pubs in Guildford. A cosy pub with character and welcoming staff. Haven't eaten here but the food menu is varied and from what I have seen people enjoy the food. The beer is well kept and I look forward to the return of Bishops Finger. The pub is taking obvious measures to keep us safe ..

Met friends here for drinks and was told
Various outsides seating was ‘reserved for locals’ who never actually showed. Was asked to leave to make room for non existent customers, even though 5 outside tables were free. Having lived in Guildford for 20 years, I consider myself to be ‘local’ but guess I didn’t make the cut, for whatever reason. Will drink somewhere else next time.

On May 17th we called into the Star Inn Guildford for an early lunch, coffee and sandwich. The staff at 12 midday were Andy and Rachel; Andy made the best coffee in Guildford and Rachel was extremely friendly and efficient. The sandwiches were lovely, the pub is delightful, we can definitely recommend it
and will return.

We visited this pub after some shopping. It’s an interesting place on different levels. The drinks (wine and beer) were a bit pricey, but nice. The toilets were down some uneven stairs, so make sure you haven’t had too many drinks before finding them. A nice touch in the ladies was a basket with emergency supplies of tampons, towels, deodorant, hairspray, etc. there is also outside seating out the back.
We would visit again next time we’re in Guildford.

This is a genuinely old pub with stacks of atmosphere, it is no surprise that it was the busiest pub we visited on our trip.
The service was excellent, efficient and friendly and the prices were really good as well, certainly compared with nearby venues.
As I have said, this is an old building with lots of nooks and crannies and steps, so not the sort of place I would like to have one too many in, at least until I was more familiar with the layout!!
We sat in a lower bar and I must say that it was a bit cold. The bar you entered into was lovely and snug, and very full. Next time, we will know better where to head for.
I really enjoyed Guildford, on our next visit we will be bringing our friends. There are so many places we can show them and, high on the list, will be the Star

My fiancé and I were so taken with The Star Inn that stopped in for drinks both nights of our 2-day stay in Guildford. This is a charming, cozy, and inviting pub with a great selection of beers - perfect for a pint (or two). We were delighted to meet the manager on our second visit, who we chatted with for at least an hour (she was there even on her night off!) Talking with her over some pints was truly one of the highlights of our trip - we are already planning our return visit. Hope to see you soon, Pip!

Popped in for a couple of drinks and light lunch. The pub has loads of character, a really charming old english pub with very friendly staff. Mixture of locals and visitors. Good selection of ales and menu varied. We had a small plates selection served hot which went well with our drinks. Great location in the town and an ideal place to have a rest during a visit to the shops and historic parts of Guildford.

"Proper pub" might not mean much to some, but if you know you know. Warm welcome, well kept ales and cosy surroundings. I love the pubs sensible and safe approach to Johnson's latest folly.

A very relaxed pub with a great choice of beers on tap and a good selection of drinks.
The food was great , the atmosphere is young and modern. The bar has a TV with the rugby playing. I would highly recommend!
