The French Quarter is a relaxed neighbourhood restaurant & wine Bar in a community of unique and quirky businesses in Newcastle city Centre. We are a friendly and approachable team of people, with a passion for the good things in life. Born from nostalgia for a traditional style of commerce and a desire to challenge perceptions that French dining is formal or fussy, we work with independent suppliers to offer a regularly changing wine list & tapas style menu. We have created a casual and sociable environment where customers are invited to experience our food, try our wines, shop from our deli and share our love of all things French!

We came for my daughter's graduation dinner and sat in this fabulous, friendly, warm restaurant for about 3 hours. What an absolute delight. We ate rabbit, frogs legs, snails, beautiful crusty bread, pate and chutneys, large plates of cheese and delicious red wine. Creamy desserts followed served on beautiful crockery with our table wiped down between every course and our friendly helpful waitress Courtney making sure we had the most superb afternoon.
The bill for 3 of us, with 3 courses, coffees, wine and an extra 3 sides was approximately £45 each!
I can't fault the place, the food or the service. Perfect

We have eaten in restaurants all over France but now there is no need to cross the Channel to have a brilliant French meal in a typically French restaurant right here in the centre of Newcastle. The French Quarter offers a very warm welcome, a bistro-style ambience, excellent service (no long delays but not hurried), a wide choice of French-style courses, beautifully presented dishes and excellent cuisine at a very reasonable price. Be sure to book because it is a very popular restaurant that even offers a cut-price lunch menu from Tuesday to Friday. The house wine is also excellent and is offered at a more than reasonable price. You really couldn’t ask for more. We’ll be back!

Excellent service, great menu that was well explained. Great value drinks list with alcohol free options and the ability to order great selection of wines by the glass and as a carafe. Food was fabulous and being coeliac it is always important to have great options but also feel confident that this is taken seriously. Majority of the menu was GF or an adjustment could be made, the Manager was really clear with her guidance and even helped me with my choice - the mussels and pommes frites were gorgeous. A real gem of a find, service, food and atmosphere made for a lovely evening.

Location and food were good. It's French tapas, so as with all tapas is a little in the pricey side for smaller portions. What we ate was well presented and tasty. However, where this restaurant lost marks for me was it's lack of alcohol free wine options (plenty of people can't or don't want to drink alcohol). We asked the server about de-alcoholised wine and could tell they had never heard of it. They weren't familiar with the wine menu (maybe they were new), which was fine but not what we expected when paying the prices on the menu. All would have been minimal issue until the bill was brought to us. The server made time to tell us that there was a £1 discretionary charity donation made on our behalf, which we could ask to be removed. What they didn't tell us was that a 10% discretionary service charge had also been added. It really irks me when restaurants do this for a regular couple eating. We don't live in the United States, we have both minimum and living wages. If you are not paying your staff sufficiently well despite charging the prices on this menu, then that is greed on the owners part. I am not anti-tipping, I will tip for good or excellent service. Whilst the service here was above average I refused to tip because of the underhand behaviour to get a 10% tip from us, which if I hadn't noticed I would have added more on top. Perhaps my response is petty, but it isn't to punish the staff, rather the business practices of the owners. We won't be back and if you visit check the bill for the discretionary tip.

My wife and I had originally planned on eating here many years ago but couldn't get the type of table we wanted so we ended up somewhere else instead - but we finally made it here on our most recent trip to Newcastle and we were very impressed with the food, wine and service.
The first thing to say is that we never felt rushed during our meal. We arrived around 7.00 pm and were (almost?) the last to leave. We were dining with friends whom we hadn't seen in a while so the night was as much about conversation as it was the food. The service was exceptionally good. It was professional without being too formal, yet relaxed without being too casual.
The best way to describe the format of the restaurant is French tapas. Having never dined here before our server went through the menu and explained how it was laid out, portion sizes and so on. We had a mix of starters, ordered four main courses and a couple of sides, and a bottle of the vin du moment.
All of the food was beautifully presented, clearly freshly prepared, and tasted wonderful. We had the boeuf bourguignon, the bavette, the blanquette de volaille, and the salmon. It was all superb. Starters and desserts were exceptional too.
At around £275 for four of us, including two bottles of wine, and an inclusive service charge we thought it was very good value for money. We will definitely be back.

Visited with colleagues for an early dinner. First time dining here.
The restaurant is charming & the staff very friendly & helpful. For 4 we ordered 2 bottles of wine 2 portions of bread & 2 dishes each with one person also having pudding.
I went for the moules mariniere & potato gratin. Potato Gratin was lovely the moules were nice. My constructive feedback would be size of the pot (although admittedly cute to look at) they came in made it difficult to access the sauce at the start - a shallower wider dish would have been preferable so I could get more sauce on each mussel and got the full taste more.
Although it is a small plate restaurant both dishes were good sized portions and plenty particularly with the bread. All my colleagues enjoyed their food.
Bread was freshly sliced & the garlic oil as well as the butter was a lovely alternative. Great wine list with lots of choice.
Came to £39 each including 10% service charge. Would I visit again? Yes

It was our first visit to the restaurant, the super friendly staff explained the menu and suggested a sharing starter followed by a number of small plates to follow. Perfect amount! The food was pipping hot, well presented and delicious! Very relaxed atmosphere, even though it was very busy, we were not rushed, allowing plenty of time to catch up after our meal. Hoping to return very soon.

The chef is very talented- we tried the Mushroom Straganoff- highly recommend if a touch pricey. The food quality does reflect the prices, and the staff were very knowledgeable about the wine menu. Looking forward to returning for a lunch. The Pinot Noir was just as expected, the dessert Maury was a little more fruity and less chocolatly than expected, but just as described by the wait staff. Will definitely visit again

We arrived to an already busy restaurant and were seated upstairs. A lovely table with views outside and also the lower floor. Water was delivered with the menus which were explained. A quick look at the wine menu led us to a punt on the house red, which was very acceptable and went well with our food choices. Our starters were fantastic A tapenade and smoked aubergine both came with toasted croutons which made the bread we ordered a bit unnecessary but still delicious. We were recommended 2 or three mains each so chose a total of 5. Prawns pil pil, fish skewers, steak babette, dauphinous potato and green beans all delicious and more than fulfilling expectations. Unfortunately this left us too full dessert but the choices were tempting. We really enjoyed dining here where the service was attentive and friendly without being imposing. I would definitely recommend to friends and family.

This restaurant is in a quirky cum unusual setting, which adds to the experience.
Staff were pleasanr and welcoming but we sat for at least 15 minutes without any water, drink or nibbles - so rather slow.
When the food arrived it was hot, very tasty and well presented.
The ethos is 'small plates' to share. The waitress guided on how much to order. We shared two starters with bread, followed by two mains and two sides, and a bottle of house wine; this was more than sufficient.
Bill was £102 including service charge - which incidentally was not mentioned on the menu.
One of the best value for money meals we have had in ages, and we'd go back there anytime.

Disappointing. Service was good ,staff friendly but after that the food was very very average. The fish kebabs only had one type of fish and was boring. Dauphinose pots lacked punch. Beef was tasty with a good sauce but meat was a bit chewy.
For the rest of the menu I go out for something I don't have at home. Stuff I can chop up isn't cooking.
Sorry no return soon.

£9 for three very thin slices of Brie and two walnuts. Seriously?
Similarly, a "main meal" of six poorly-cooked, chewy prawns.
The service was also pretty poor. Used starter plates left on the table during mains, waitress hastily asking "is that it?" before everyone at the table had even had a chance to say their orders, being asked "is everything alright with your food" mere seconds after the plates arriving at the table and not having had a single mouthful yet.
I'd avoid this place if I were you.

More than worthy of 5 , another delightful couple of hours spent in the French Quarter. The service was excellent and the food ( all vegetarian dishes) were delicious, supported by a fine bottle of hose red wine . If you like lovely food in a lovely restaurant then I can only recommend .you reserve a table here.

For the moment we walked in to the moment we left everything about the French Quarter was excellent . The staff were attentive ,informative with intruding and the food ( Vegetarian) was delicious all accompanied with a 3 glass red wine tasters.
We will be in Newcastle again within the month and this is where we will be eating again . Highly Recommend ( make a reservation )

Firstly, the food was good but not amazing. I don't usually leave reviews very often but felt I had to explain the menu so some may not get caught out as I did. I chose the Duck from the mains section which was literally one duck leg at £16.95 with nothing else as is the case with all the so called mains. We then had to choose green beans at £6.50 and a salad at £9.95 which could be shared between two people. This made the main dishes we both had a cost of over £25 each and although it was good it certainly was not worth that. There were three of us and we had in total olives, bread, three mains, three deserts, three glasses of wine, two small beers (don't do pints) and two tiny 200ml cokes. The bill came to £153. Although we enjoyed the food I know we could have gone somewhere else for a lot less and enjoyed as much of even more. It may be that some think this is reasonable which is fine just don't take as the price on menu is for an individual meal you do need to order a good few other dishes. We can't say anything bad about it but we wouldn't visit again as we just don't see the value for money.
