Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Service was friendly and fast. The sushi was so fresh and incredibly delicious. We were seated at a table as we wanted a bit more privacy but you can also sit at the bar and watch the sushi being prepared. We also ordered sake and...this was a delicious accompaniment to the sushi.More

Amazing sushi. Lovely chef and very friendly staff. Although the sushi was very good I have had cheaper experiences without compromising on flavour quality and texture combinations.

Daughter loves sushi so found this place. A short walk from the City Centre on Bristol St. Small, friendly place. We sat at the bar and watched the chef at work. Great sushi and sashimi made from high quality fish. Really good experience and will...returnMore

We had heard good things about this place and I had the independent Birmingham app, so it had been on my list to visit. It did not disappoint! We went on a Thursday evening and had bar seats. We were able to see our fresh...sushi being made in front of us, as well as the lovely chef answering any questions we had about the food. We had the salmon spicy set as well as some other add ons, with plum sake to end the meal. Overall 5/5 great food, great service, great music made the vibe even better. Defo recommend!More

Visited Gaijin with two friends. The food was stunning, the sushi was freshly made in front of us and incredibly simple yet tasty. Service was fine but not exceptional. Average explanation of the menu! However when we did decide we were guided as to how...to eat it ie with it without ginger etc There’s only sushi on the menu which was what we expected and meant it was great quality. We shared a number of things across the menu. And had prawns to start which were delicious too! Wine was totally over priced minimum of 10.50 for 125ml per glass. I questioned this and the response was that not many people order wine which didn’t really justify this price. I ordered Prosecco and my friend had a beer which was a bit more reasonable.More

We were visiting the area to attend an event at the NEC and, after doing some research, decided on Gaijin Sushi as the place for a special meal just the two of us. It did not disappoint. The waiter and both chefs were friendly, happy...to lightly banter, talk about the food and processes, where they come from...anything! Aside from 2 small tables, every seat is around an L-shaped kitchen/bar area which meant that we were sat within 1m of the closest chef. It was such an incredible and intimate experience to see those amazing chefs prepare our food so close up. We had spider rolls (soft shell crab), dragon rolls (eel) and spicy tuna rolls plus edamame beans and sashimi (tuna, salmon, sea bream and sea bass) to eat and Kirin Ichiban and the most sensational white Burgundy to drink. It wasn't cheap, but we knew what to expect. Nearly £160 including tip but in return we had arguably the most memorable dinner experience of our combined 70 years. Thank you Michal and team. We'll be saving up to come again next year.More

I'm not sure if it was an off day for them...the chef and owner didn't seem very welcoming. They seemed bit rushed off their feet. No welcome or explanation of menu etc.. Sitting by the counter with other people eo close was uncomfortable...seats were hard...and there was little privacy to talk. Sushi was decent but no better than others I've been too. I was expecting much more given the reviews. Its ok. Prices aren't cheap either.. Katsura prawns were nicely cooked. Crisp on outside. We won't be coming back again. Nothing from our experience majes us want to. Service and hospitality was lacking. Asking for dessert was met with ' we don't have any' that's it,blunt and cold Hopefully a one off for them but of not likely will go down.More

I work in an industry where I’m lucky enough to visit a lot of top end restaurants in london & around the country. I came here for a date with my partner, and can honestly same that from the moment we walked in it was...such a pleasant experience. The staff were so welcoming, kind, friendly & went out of their way to make our visit special. We got to sit in front of the counter & watch the person make our food which was both cool, fun to watch & he engaged with my date & myself, telling us about the history of the restaurant & his recommendations. Such a wonderful restaurant & when we’re back in Birmingham, we’ll definitely be back! Also - I think very reasonable price for the food! FYI, the pics are good but definitely doesn’t do the food justice!More

Booked for Saturday lunch for bar seating. We were first diners to arrive in small restaurant just after 1pm. Handed menu and drinks list with apologies that no white whine and no weekend specials available as sold out on Friday - which was a bit...disappointing for their first opening on a Saturday lunchtime. Menu was text only - no pictures/images so assumes a knowledge of Japanese sushi/sashimi terminology and although waiter offered to explain, this can make ordering harder for those less likely to admit they know little about the dishes. My partner could hardly hear him due to the music and general noise of food preparation as nothing soft in the surroundings to absorb any sound so every sound is amplified by hearing aids. Waiter clarified which dishes were tempura - Katsu prawns (although don't mention they're in tempura batter) and tempura roll which was a sushi roll deep fried. Other sushi restaurants we've dined in have always had an offer of tempura veg and tempura prawns. However the prawns were delightful - cooked to perfection. Our dragon roll and tempura roll were tasty but unsure about Philadelphia cheese in the latter. Watching the chefs at work was mesmerising as the restaurant filled up. We washed our dishes down with rose wine - the only other wine available was plum wine which sounded a bit sweet and Asahi dry beer - always a good accompaniment. With only 2 tables and the rest bar seating, it's bijou but the food offering is really good. disappointed that having stated it was for a belated birthday celebration, no reference/mention was made of that at all. However we'll be back to try some of the other dishes we saw prepared by the chefs.More

I’d book... They have about 12 seats.. I can’t remember the exact prices, perhaps £6/8.50 for three pieces or something like that. Not expensive for the quality if you understand the cuisine, the skill and the ingredients... More

I don’t think they serve alcohol... I could be wrong. But they do green tea, water, soft drinks.
