visited on saturday with a couple friends, after seeing they're instagram... & as i expected they did not dissappoint staff were friendly and very descriptive about everything, they were keen to get us to try salsas so we had all of them so so so nice(best guac i've ever had)but we all came for the star of the show... the specials board! dover sole= heaven in the mouth rest of the menu was in close second to the sole all so flavoursome and could tell everything is freshly prepared... as a lover of all things fish the fried coley hit the spot. if you come here expecting to get full off one portion of tacos then it wont happen thats why there is such a variety of tacos and small plates (amazeballs BTW) and great value for money in my opinion and well worth the service charge. 5* everytime and i will come again and again.

Absolutely fantastic. First visit we have walked past this place a couple of times without entering as wasn’t really sure what the place was. But a menu appeared on the outside so we had a look and thought let’s give it a go. What can I say the food was superb tacos perfect cooked and also had quality oysters which is unusual to find in a restaurant these days. Only 1 negative and this sounds harsh they do add an automatic 10% service charge to all tables even if there are only two of you is a little cheeky. the service is great but a service charge is added to the bill which I know you can remove but also makes the experience a little awkward. But the place is great thank you

This is my favourite restaurant at the Moment.. I have just recently discovered this place and one of their other joints tiger bites pig and I cannot get enough of them. To the point I made my husband cancel a reservation he had made in a posh restaurant for my birthday so we could come here instead. Tacos as good as any I’ve had in Mexico. All of the Tacos are fab but my favourites are chicken tinga, coley and squash. Oh and definitely get the prawns, tortilla chips and salsas. So yum

The more Taco places in Birmingham, the better. And when they’re a nice little independent place like Tierra, all the more reason for a warm welcome. I was keen to visit. The place was well located and inside, designed in funky pastel colours that freshened the place up. I liked it a lot, it really seemed to suit the style of dining and cuisine. There was a good choice of meats, unfortunately the beef barbacoa ‘til sellout’ was sold out by the Saturday lunchtime we were there. So, we happily went for the beef shin and pork shoulder. We noticed there were options for sides, and also salsa (for £2.50), but we expected the tacos to be plenty. When the plates arrived, we just looked at each other, aware we were thinking the same thing. At the most, they were more starter/side-sized and we should’ve ordered more. At the least, they were laughable for what we paid. Not wanting to spoil it, we dug in and were really pleased at how tasty the meat was. But based on the size, it was gone in less than 5 minutes. Which is a compliment to how good it was, but also a critique on them being no more than the size of your palm. Now, I would complain about the price, but £8 for this style of food, in JQ, and for tacos, is the norm. It’s the portion size. I was expecting the 5” tacos I’d had elsewhere, or the standard quantity of 3, but these were a little over half that size, and only 2. And the fact they didn’t have a pot of salsa or something to come with it, that would’ve perhaps made it more worth it (that salsa was £2.50 – again, too much). Oh, and plus a 12.5% service charge. Bringing the total of these tacos to over £9… Yes, it’s discretionary, but don’t add it to the bill automatically because you know people are too embarrassed to ask for it to be removed. This isn’t America. Overall, we left hungry and a bit miffed that we’d spent money on feeling the same as when we’d came in. The food deserves 4+/5, but I can’t give Tierra any more, when fundamentally I wasn’t satiated. I’d have had to have spent double to be close to that, which I wasn’t willing to do.

We were looking for somewhere to eat on a Sunday night when everyone else was trying to shut up shop. No booking but we got a very warm welcome. Food was great and kept coming as it was prepared. Chicken Tinga tacos were first class, as were their Puy Lentil equivalents. We loved the Frijoles, that oozed as much authenticity as flavour. Padrons and Guacamole were perfect. Ostentatious frozen margaritas were complemented by draught beer, according to preference. When we had to get a cab in a hurry the staff were understanding and helpful. Definitely recommended.

We visited last weekend after hearing great things from our friends so thought we’d give it a go. Wow. What a place! Food was absolutely incredible and great value for money when considering the high quality of food produced. Drinks were fantastic too and we especially loved the Mexpresso Martinis! Service couldn’t be flawed and the overall vibes in the restaurant were great. Would definitely recommend a visit but get booked in quickly as it can get busy!

The dishes we had were well prepared and quite tasty. The ambience, however, and the portion sizes were a let-down. I don't see the reason behind the proliferation of "street food" venues (and that includes tapas, meze and the rest). They're often hit and miss and always overpriced. I paid £26 for one tacos order (consisting of two very small tacos), 1 order of chicken wings, one beer and one frijoles and one plantains order I shared with my mate. But, it was tasty so we might visit again.

Fantastic independent in the Jewellery Quarter. Popped in last weekend for the first time & certainly won't be the last. Brilliant range of fresh authentic tacos, cooling margaritas & quick service too. Turn up with the Independent Birmingham app & you'll get a free Margarita with a spend over £15 (on certain days) which is £7 worth of free margarita for £1.99 a month to IB.

2nd visit to Tierra, and 2nd review! We returned last Tuesday (31st). Again, Tierra didn't disappoint. Seated upstairs. The waitresses were extremely friendly & attentive. We kicked off with a selection of totopos with dips, and then shared some terrific tacos (beef & chicken) with some wings and cheese hush puppies!! Everything that came to the table was great. Another enjoyable evening. Terrific Mexican dishes and well worth visiting if you're in the Jewellery Quarter. 👍👍

The food is amazing, quite easily the best Mexican food I have eaten anywhere. Smallish restaurant very busy even though it was mid week. The staff were attentive very cheerful offered great advice on the food and drinks. Already planning to take friends there next week.

Staff were very good and welcoming throughout. However the food was very bland in comparison to other Mexican restaurants we have experienced. Avoid the fish tacos these are particularly moist / soggy. After hearing so many positive things about this place it was particularly disappointing. Overall, we won’t recommend or visit again ourselves, it feels like the authenticity is missing and you get a sense that it is a more commercial kitchen operating, rather than cooking individual dishes for each customer.

Reservation for 2 at 8pm. This is a small and quaint restaurant. The predominant feature on the menu is soft shell tacos and there is a great variety, including vegetarian and vegan options. Unfortunately, 2 of the taco options we would have chosen were unavailable/sold out. However, the fried fish taco was tender and delicious, the pulled pork , flavoursome, but a little dry. The tortilla crisps with dips is a nice start to the meal, and the hush puppies, just WOW! We also had frozen sangria, which remained punchy and strong in flavour, even when the ice had melted. Our main waitress was friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, we weren’t offered desert and this was brought to our attention when a cheesecake arrived at the table next to us. Aware ‘Arraz con Leche’ (Mexican rice pudding) may be a feature on the menu, we asked to see the dessert menu . This was met with frustration by a different waitress and plain rudeness. Her response was that they needed the table back. I pointed out that the table next to us (also for 2) had been seated and were eating before we arrived. She abruptly, and in a challenging tone, said she would go and get the dessert menu. Having pointed out the Areaz con Leche was not available, we opted out of dessert and left a little frustrated at the disappointing end to an otherwise tasty meal.

This is the perfect place to catch up with your friends for some real gooood food and drinks. We did book in advance but the cosy atmosphere and great service made us not want to leave. Food was so good! It is clear that Tierra do not compromise on the quality and freshness of their food...it was evident in every bite. You could taste how fresh and decadent the prawns were and the homestyle touch on the guacamole, salsa and tortilla made them absolutely delightful with our drinks. We ordered the truffle cheese hush puppies as well as the patatas on the side. Delish! We went for the pork carnitas and beef barbacoa and thoroughly enjoyed the well seasoned and balanced morsels. However, we did find that the beef tacos were a little oiler. Tierra is a great place to go for a little Mexican adventure in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter and we loved that it is also on the Independent Birmingham App. A must try! After raving on about how delicious, reasonably priced, and well thought the original Taco den was I decided to share my discovery with a friend...Unfortunately, Tierra is no longer the delicious little gem it was. Its moved to the Church pub roof top. We couldn't have been more disappointed. My taco was bland, unimaginative, "Jackfruit " and that's all it was just slightly warm with absolutely nothing else, including flavour. When I asked if there were any of those beautiful, made in house, signature hot sauces the reply was "we have ketchup, Mayo, or tobasco. We also had the corn-on-the-cob which came with no decoration, or excitement. Grilled peppers with flaked salt were the only OK element to the meal. I will not be going again unless Tierra regains its former glory.

I’m not big on writing reviews but I felt compelled to give this amazing little place a huge shout. Tierra Taco is heaven on earth if Mexican food is your thing. From its understated, canteen chic decor, to its friendly unassuming staff, after a minute here you know you are in for something special. The star of the show is the food, and without a doubt is the most authentic Mexican food you are likely to find on our shores. We are planning to revisit, from London, because it really is that good.
